Today was the day! Katie had spent… uhh… was it hours? Days even? All staring at one photo of the character she’d now mold from this dullard lump of a default character.

… Not that she was one to remark on ‘dullards’, really.

She closed her eyes and there the image was, seared into her mind like a brand on a cow’s buttocks, which also described perfectly how she felt after not being able to sleep for 2 days straight. A worthy sacrifice, perhaps, for the life that could be gained.

It took her mere minutes of repeated eye-closing, checking that memory like a reference image, then setting each character trait precisely: by number! Not 10 minutes later, and she was confident this bright-eyed girl staring back blankly was the perfect match. Even so, she hesitated on the confirm button, anxieties defying her. Was her soulmate as dedicated as she was? Did she mess up something? By all rights, everyone else she’d met had turned out to be a scumbag somehow so why should she expect that same dedication from this internet friend?

… But then, she had nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

Katie hit confirm.

Katie— no, it was Kit now —stood in what appeared to be a clearing in the middle of some forest. A basic beginner tunic on her chest, and long white hair brushing her back. Definitely not her usual style, but that was kinda the point: to turn a new leaf. A light briefly entered her peripheral vision and she looked up to see a shooting star up ahead. Presumably her’s. Nice.

… Wouldn’t it have been better if the two twins had shot stars at the same time though? Maybe that was being too unrealistic.

Now, it was all Kit could do but wait… and wait… and wait! How long had it been? They’d planned to log on at the same time; even syncing up timezones. Was she just that slow at making the character? Or was Kit fast?

"I should’ve known!" Kit lamented out loud with an irritated groan. "You can’t trust anyone!"

Yet before she could throw up her hands and log out, deeming the experiment a total failure, the opposite side of the clearing began to glow, and seconds later, a familiar-looking girl popped into view, followed by another star.

They shared a look, and as Kit‘s eyes carefully scanned over every inch of this person, her skepticism began to turn to pure joy. She’d done it! She’d taken it seriously! They were the same height, they had the same hair patterns, the same body type and apparent age. In every way, they appeared the perfect set of isekai twins!

"H-h-hello!" Kit stammered, forcing herself to be bold, but clearly shaking from the gravity of this meeting (and more than a mild level of sleep deprivation). "You du— ehm— I mean— ya— …you did it!" Very smooth. Great first impressions, Kit. Way to give the girl second thoughts in the first minute. "It’s perfect!"

Today was the day! For the first time in like, forever, she could feel her heart pound against her chest. Full of life. Staring at the image of the person she would mold herself to be. A new identity that would be more real than her current self.

This wasn't any different than dressing up for a performance. No reason to feel so nervous about it.

But it was! For the person she was doing this for was anything but like anybody else! "You can do this, Cath..." She whispered to herself as she took some deep breaths. She had gotten plenty of sleep, and practiced time and time before! This... would be absolute perfection. And maybe for the first time, because she wanted it to be herself.

...

The more Cath designed the 'Isekai Twin' they had settled on, the more confident she became. The raven-long hair, only interrupted by perfectly symmetrical strands of green like some sort of dark-mint chocolate. A color scheme that would ensure she'd not be taken advantage of. The setting of their eyes, mouth, ears, and nose. Drawing across the virtual environment in a motion she had done hundreds of times before. Measuring. Adjusting. Repeat. Measure. Adjust. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. And repeat!

...

By the time Catherine, mere moments before becoming 'Kat', was done, she hadn't even noticed how much time had passed. Yet had never doubted that on the other side of pressing this button, she'd have her wish come true. A desire fulfilled that would change her world. Though only the first step of many to come, it meant today was their birthday... yes?

With anticipation and excitement, she pressed confirm.

Light engulfed her, completely blinding the now-Magia, as she could slowly feel just how realistic this 'VRMMO' stuff truly was. The pleasant scent of the forest, the firm ground below, the lively chirping of the birds.

Before Kat's eyes could fully adjust to the sudden change in the light level around her, she was being greeted.

"H-h-hello!"

There she stood. As if looking straight into a mirror. If that mirror had color-changing properties. Her past soul-mate. Her one and only true friend. Her future twin-sister. A very, very warm feeling was spreading from her chest. Kat's own slightly confused face grew from slight confusion from just having been spawned to a very, very, warm smile matching what she felt.

She gave Kit a happy nod. "Hello!" She responded, before taking a few steps forward and pulling Kit into a tight hug. "We did it!" Hoping this singular moment would hold for eternity.

Despite her nervousness, with each passing moment, Kit felt her anxieties melting away. The angry look of scorn from her new twin’s alleged betrayal was now a thing of the distant past. As the two embraced, and her lonesome-focused terms were corrected, Kit felt a warmth like she never had before.

This was the real deal!

"Hauhaghheeheheheiiiiiiiii~" she released an incoherent babble of joyful… uhm… she’d call those twin noises —as she squeezed back gleefully. When was the last time she’d been hugged by anyone? Gosh, it’d been… well, she couldn’t even remember; that was how long. Her deadbeat of a mother might’ve done it like once when she was a toddler.

Kit feasted on the embrace like a starved leech— wait no, that was creepy… —like a… hungry person… in a uhh… cake shop!? She held on for a good minute or so, relishing how every bit of this game— no, this world, —felt real! It was like perfect vessel for a new life, just as described!

Eventually, their hug had to end, and the two stepped back, glancing at each other. Kit offered Kat the widest smile she could.

"I-if we… uhm…" Wow, she was still pretty shaky. "We… we’re definitely the perfect twins, right…!?" They sure looked the part now. "Which means… Say the first thing that comes to you mind, okay~! Ready?"

The first great challenge of their twinship! The coordinated speech~! It felt a little rushed, but in the heat of the moment… Kit knew in her heart they could do it perfectly, right here and now! First try!

She took a slow, deep breath to coordinate the timing and: three… two… one…
"I’M SO HAPPY TO BE HERE WITH YOU!"

Aahhhh... this was just. Good. She had been hugged, and hugged, plenty of times before. But this one was different. It felt... genuine. Obviously. And nice. And warm. Kit's body really was warm. And fragile, too, wasn't it? Something Kat had to protect!

Though as the too-short hug ended, and they each took a step back, Kat noticed Kit being kinda out of it.

Cute. Kat thought, finding herself ever so slightly annoyed that Kit was technically the older twin!

"Kit..." Kat gave her white-haired half a concerned look as she seemed unsure about their Twinship, before giving her a bright smile. "Of course we are!" There was no reason to doubt ANYTHING.

But Kit wanted things to be proven right. And so Kat would. Closing her eyes for a second, she mused. The first thing coming to mind... was...

"ICE CREAM!" She shouted back! Oh... they still had to put some more hard work into that, but for now, Kat knew the perfect thing to say. "I've always dreamed of sharing ice cream with a sister! And it's quite warm, so, you know..."

Maybe... this would work?

"Your favorite ice cream flavour is..." Another attempt. Another challenge. Maybe easier than what they had set out just seconds ago.

An ominous silence. An innocent smile. Her gaze alone communicated when she was ready to guess Kit's favorite. "Cotton Candy!" Just like Kit's hair!

Despair. An ominous sign, if she chose to believe in such things.

"Ice cream…?" Kit questioned with a deadpan look in her eyes. Was her new sister actually insane? Who the heck thought of ice cream at a time like this!? She should’ve known only a crazy person would’ve agreed to her own crazy idea. Maybe they should just quietly call off the whole idea, and—

"Ooooaaaahhhhhhh~!" Her eyes grew a little misty as Kat explained what might possibly have been the best reason ever for having such a weird thought!

Kat was so perfect~!

"Ice cream!" Kit nodded. It was obviously a bit late, and had failed to have the effect she wanted, but they got on the same page in the end! That was what mattered, right?

She stared intensely into Kat’s eyes as another attempt was made. This was it, right! They were soulmates, so naturally she would have to instinctively know that her favorite flavor of ice cream was birthday ca—

"Ahehehee, yes! Well… close enough~!" Kit giggled, fixing her long hair nervously. She loved pretty much every candy-flavored ice cream anyways, so Kat was basically kinda sorta 100% right… more or less.

"And yours is…" Kit paused, glancing over her double. One flavor popped into her mind, by no means related to glancing over the color scheme she’d chosen, and entirely with twin telepathy, she guessed: "Chocomint Chip!"

"Chocomint Chip!"

Wow!
Woah!
Wowing!
Wowzers!

She did it! Kit absolutely totally did it! Kat's eyes were glowing and her mouth was wide open from pure amazement. ... For a moment it looked like her face was losing color. Did Magia have to breathe?

Breathe Kat! Breathe!

Regardless, Kat snapped out of it. Color returned to her lively face. It wasn't time for her to die, yet!

"Wowies!" She spoke, her eyes not having lost any sparkles as she pulled Kit in another quick hug. "That is absolutely correct! See! We're totally in sync! Do you think Terrasphere has Ice Cream? It'd be nice if they have. Not that I couldn't abandon it. But it'd be nice if we don't have to. Or! We could make our own ice cream. You're super smart, and technically the older one, yes? So it works out!"

Kat cleared her throat. She had been talking a little bit too much, hadn't she? "Anyway, now that our twinship is truly proven, we should decide on some of these, urm..." What were they called again? "Speech... pattern... things? It doesn't matter which, I think. Since we're in sync and all! But there are so many different ones, yes? Like finishing each sentence with a quick word, like, 'right', right? And the other going right! Or playing all our sentences off each other. Or, oh! We finish our sentences but you say a word I say the next and you the next. Could also just do it with half a sentence and-"

Kat was talking a little bit too much, wasn't she?

Kit clapped her hands together in delight as she received the validation she was looking for. Yes! One more hug and she truly began to feel it! Soon enough, they two would morph into an inseparable hivemind and take the world by storm!

... Or they'd eat ice cream. That sounded good too.

"Ah--" Kat kept going.
"I--" Kat kept going.
"Oo, that--" Kat kept going.

Soon enough, Kit was in a daze, having been bombarded with more social energy than she'd probably experienced in the last couple of months, all within the span of about 60 seconds. Had her sister been an auctioneer on the outside or something...?

But she brought up important logistics that had to be considered! After all, it wasn't just about being in perfect sync (and she was so glad that they basically more-or-less kinda sorta were 100% in perfect sync), but also about how well they showed their perfect synchronous twinship to the rest of the world!

"We'll have to try them all~!" Kit nodded frantically. "...Right?" She winked.

"I wonder what this game is like, anyway..."

"Right!" Kat gave Kit a wink. "But it also goes just beyond speech! This game has combat so we totally have to do shenanigans-" Gosh, she always wanted to say such a silly word! For a moment Kat giggled. "-too! But I don't really know any details. We should also talk with strangers to see how it goes after we've practiced! Right?"

Right.

"Anyway! Let's go then! The one-word-practice. I'll start..." A sentence to think about. How about she started with something super simple!? I really like you.

"I..." Wait- no! "Wait! No!" It was about them! It had to be different.

"Not I! Nope. I meant us. Yes. We!"

She started again.

"We are really amazing twins!"

...
...
...

Time continued to pass at the speed of one second per second as Kat seemed to wait for something more. Like, a "Right?" - "Right!". But nothing came.

"That was amazings! We got thisss." She ultimately spoke full of joy. Combining things was way too snowflakey-anyway, maybe. "Right?"

Talking with strangers to learn the game, hm...?

"Right!" Kit was fast to answer. Shenanigans sounded amazing! Or an innuendo for unspeakable horrors. But there was no way Kit was in sync with someone who would use it in such a degenerate manner! Absolute trust!

"Wh--" she was about to add, when she was cut off.

Kit blinked a few times as her twin stumbled a bit to get started. That was fine, that was fine... lots of adjustments to be made going from the inferior former life of loneliness to one of perfect twinship.

Every word felt... stressful, if she was being honest with herself. Language was for exchanging ideas, and just using these to make a random statement to prove a point felt kind of aimless. Nevertheless, they absolutely nailed it, as expected~!

... Why was Kat looking at her like that...?

"Right! Of course! Buuut..." she couldn't take these kinds of stressful social games all the time... "Maybe we save that one for special occasions! Right? Sister? Sis'? Nee-san?"

"Right! But, nee-nee." She studied hard for this kind of lingo! "Every occasion is special with you, you know? Right?" Striking a sort of pose as she swayed left to right... just to kinda lose her balance and fall down for a moment.

Just pretend nothing bad happened.

"It'll be a lot of hard work still BUT we're super-synched so it definitely gonna happen!" So, Kit didn't like the one-word thing that much? But of course! Kit was right, talking like that all the time was bound to be stressful. But if they knew what the other would say, was there even a need to talk?

Maybe, one day, they'd achieve ultimate twinships and could just communicate by looking at each other!

"So what about finishing sentences?!" Kat asked all excited as she looked around. Pointing at a tree. "Imagine this..." She hinted, slowing down a little for Kit to catch on.

She even knew her "nee-nee"s! How on earth did Kit ever doubt that this was anything other than two soulmates finding each other! Their twinship was written in the stars... LITERALLY, in this world's case!

"Righ-- wah!!" Kit stared for a moment at her fallen twin, having shrieked as if she herself had fallen. Wait. Actually...

Kit made a similar pose and fell over a similar way to be similar to her similar sister! If they fell, they fell together! That was the rule! They both stood back up and went right along with the conversation.

"Even better: someday we'll say the same things at the same time!" Sure, the first attempt had been a bust, but that was just a fluke. Really, nothing could stop them once they'd practiced and learned to abandon their individuality. At the rate they were going, she gave like a couple of days, maybe.

Kit glanced at the tree Kat pointed to. Imagine this? She imagined it turning into a giant ent and swallowing people whole. No wait, they were finishing sentences! Right.

"...could... uhm... be the start of a brand-new adventure for us!" More of that stress. "Right...?" She sounded a bit less sure on that one than usual.

...this tree was a bear!
"...could... uhm... be the start of a brand-new adventure for us!"
"Right...?"

"Right!"

... Wait... no! That wasn't what Kat had been thinking at all. But if they were to face a bear now, that would indeed be the start of a brand-new adventure for them! And considering Kit was born earlier, it made only sense she was a bit ahead.

Yes! Exactly. They were still in perfect twinship! Simply had to work on the timing a bit. Because what Kit said would have totally been the next thing they would have said anyway!

"...Right!" After what felt like half an eternity of Kat's normal-nice-face, she re-affirmed that Kit had indeed said the right thing with her trademark bright smile.

"And a new adventure means enemies!" She read that up online. Arr-Pee-Geehs had something like monsters. And stats. And levels. And stuff! "So we have to learn how to defend ourselves! Right?" She nodded. Though sounded very unsure as she was quite clueless otherwise!

That was an abnormally long and uncomfortable silence Kat was giving her… oh whew, there it was! She was worried there for a moment.

"Right! We have to find the perfect way to defend ourselves together!" It brought up several important questions, in fact. Finding information online about Terrasphere was practically impossible for obvious reasons, so there’d be no reading ahead for either of them. That said, Terrasphere should theoretically operate like any typical VR RPG, so it probably wouldn’t take them too long to figure things out, especially now that their brainpower was effectively doubled!

"So there should be a skill system, where we can read about different abilities, and…" Kit glanced at Kat. She looked lost.

"Uhm… if we just open the palm menu, I think we’ll be able to…" Wait, was she still confused…!? Kit paused to blink a few times. There was no way she didn’t understand what a palm menu was, right!?

"Nee-nee! I read somewhere that in VR games, you squeeze your hand like this to open a menu!" Kit smiled, dying just a bit inside as she illustrated the most basic gesture all VR gamers knew by instinct. That was fine! It was all fine! Kat was excited to learn the game with her… her twin, and that was what mattered! She’d learn soon enough, and then they’d be right back in sync again!

"Cool! Right?"

Skill System? Different Abilities?

Kat did indeed, look lost.

PALM Menu? Was there a palm somewhere in the forest where they could choose food from? Wait, no. She did know what a menu was! After all, Kat had researched hard to know about how to make a character and all!... But that was about it.

She was indeed super clueless otherwise. Did Kit know how to do these things? She did suggest this game and all, after all, in the first place. The perfect experience for the perfect twinship. But... her knowledge seemed limited, too!

Clearly, Kit didn't seem to know that much more than Kat. Which meant they could learn and experience all of this together. "Exciting..." She whispered to herself with sparkles in her eyes. As she squeezed her hands... her palm? A few too-many-times before something popped up.

"Woah! Do you see this?! It just... opened! Just like that! This is indeed so cool! You're so smart, Sis!" Kat gave Kit another hug. Quite touchy, that one.

"Buuut nee-nee." She gave Kit a wink after releasing her once more from her clutch. "Maybe we should find someone to teach us... right?"

Kit smiled warmly as she received another hug, relishing it for just a bit longer than any normal person would after Kat let go. Hugs were amazing when you trusted the one giving them to you, unlike the ungrateful pieces of trash she knew on the outside. Those would only hug her if it gave them an opportunity to drive a knife in her back, and frankly, she felt the same about them!

"Oooaaahhhhh~! Right! A teacher~!" She absolutely did not need a… weeelllll… if it meant getting taught together, as sisters, maybe she did need one. Not so much for the knowledge, but the essential bonding experience! It was a great plan, as expected of her twin sister!

"I wonder how hard it is to find someone to teach this game to people…" Kit questioned honestly. Probably most people they met would be creepy scumbags! But there was always flopping about in the menus with her sister to fall back on, so maybe they‘d give it a shot and see what happened.

After a few moments, Kit’s eyes meandered down to Kat’s hands and she held out her own to hold. "Well, let’s go find out! Right, Kat~?"

"Right, Kit!" Twinship! "It should be easy!" Kat gave her twin sister an encouraging nod. "Plenty of 'em around, right?" She gestured to the forest which was, apart from the normal forest noises and bears quite empty.

"There must be civilization somewhere. We just have to find it and ask someone for help!" Easy as that. She grabbed Kit's hand. "And at the same time, we can practice some more! You know..." Kat closed her eyes, smiling. "... we don't need anyone else to prove our bond to, yes? But it'd sure be nice to get some recognition, I think. I mean. They HAVE to. We're... perfect! Right, Kit?!"

With these words, Kat dragged Kit alongside the forest. The direction? She didn't know. But if they kept walking only forward, they were bound to meet someone!

Hopefully, that someone wouldn't be bears or anything other dangerous.
But then again, she had Kit to protect her, no?
