Unfolding the Unknown
Somewhere far, far away...

The gentle frizzle touching the windows created small dots of water, that shimmered when reflected by the cozy light that bathed and warmed the living room while easing the silence with a constant crackling.

Sitting on an armchair, a purple-haired woman patiently worked on a piece of knit craft, already expecting the incoming winter... However, her attention was averted, as soon as a sequence of footsteps coming from the ceiling made its way to the stairs, with a small figure soon appearing by the end of the room. It was the fourth time that night.

"Auntie!" The girl called, hurrying to near the woman. "Can I go outside?" Her eyes sparkled, expecting a big-

"No." The woman smiled, looking at the girl.

The girl's sparkly eyes faded, and her cheeks puffed. "But Auntie-!"

"You will catch a cold." The woman sighed at the stubbornness, resuming her knitting and tilting her head. "What you would do outside at this time, anyway? It is dark."

She crossed her arms. "Anything, it is way too boring inside here, there is nothing to do-" She said with pouty lips.

"Hmm." The woman realized the same scene would keep unfolding over and over, so instead of insisting on fighting the girl's stubbornness... "How about a story, then?" She suggested, halting her knitting.

The puff cheeks deflated, and her pout turned into a wide smile. "A story? Really? What kind of story?"

Seeing the satisfaction of the girl brought a fond expression to the woman's eyes, who freed her hands from her knit tools, opening them to shimmer a sphere that reflected a starry night... No... It reflected a whole galaxy, brimming with nebulas, stars, planets, and every sort of celestial body.

"It will be one, from the Starcalled." She began, with six stars glowing so brightly it turned the sphere livelier. "It all started with six brave Starcalled-"

"Nine!" The girl interrupted.

"Hm..?" The woman rose her eyebrow.

"I like nine Starcalled more!" The girl said with a firm nod.

"... Very well..." The woman cleared her throat, and with a gesture of her hands, three more stars brimmed intensely, forming a constellation of nine, beautiful stars. "It all started with nine brave Starcalled..."

Cycle 0 - Pathfinding

They had been called by leaders of the Adventure Guild and the Explorers League. Within the depths of an unknown labyrinth of brick tunnels, infinite in size and filled with mysteries to be uncovered and treasures to be recovered...

However, the greed from the Guild and the undying curiosity of the League brought an uncertain fate for its members, who had never come back to their homes after taking off to seek for what the labyrinth had to offer.

The nine Starcalled, knowing this and being summoned by the Factions, took their way into the depths of the labyrinth. With them, they carried a simple map that the League had constructed through the months they had been exploring the area...

The tunnels of the Labyrinth were made out of a cold and dark gray, that only had some color thanks to the azure magical flames of the torches that lit the way of the group.

In the path, signs of destruction from whatever encounters the adventurers and explorers had spreaded everywhere. Broken walls, creating accidental shortcuts, solved and half-solved puzzles, burns of spells that blasted against floors and ceilings along with huge bloodied claw marks that seemed to sink on the hard, brick surfaces as if they were a blade slashing through flesh.
With those clues before them, the nine Starcalled decided to...

Cycle 0 Objectives

Exploration

Use Knack to scout ahead stealthily, Presence to guide and organize the group, or Fitness to open paths blocked by physical obstacles.

When rolling, you add to a Contribution Check always counting up. This one doesn't have a limit, but the higher, the better are the chances of the Objective not finding you before you find it. [0/???]

Investigation

Use Awareness to find more clues to understand what is laying ahead. When rolling, you add to a Contribution Check, counting up. [0/250]

Upon concluding the Awareness Contribution Check, someone may roll a Knowledge Quality Check to figure out information about the Objective. The higher the Quality Check, the more information will be available in the following Cycle. [0/???]

Preparation

Use any of your Actions to prepare for the following Cycle. All Actions are available for this Cycle, including Creativity Actions (Read Homebrew, if you are using it). You don't need a 'target' to use the effects of Protect and Counter, for example, but you may roll if necessary to see if you are successful on activating the Action ability.

Cycle 0 Rules

  • No word limits for this Cycle.
  • You may post twice this cycle, but you shall not double post. You can only do actions in one of the two posts, however.

Here comes Aloe singing as she goes. A self-professed Goddess on a mission, Aloe was here to collect neat decorations for The Star Parlor, her little corner-sanctum-of-heaven-on-earth, and to increase her divine power by increasing her prestige among the Terrazens by granting the salvation of victory.

"Aloe Aloe Aloe Song~
The Great Aloe who can do no wrong~
Because She's The Goddess of Victory~~~!"

Aloe unwisely led the pack as she skipped down the stairs singing the Aloe song. She was supremely confident with nary a care in the world, why?

"Hey~ everyone~! Follow me~! You've got nothing to fear~ because~ The Goddess of Victory is here~!"

^Because of that. Taking one last little hop, skipping the last step for luck, Aloe’s wings unfurled as she landed and raised her hands like an olympic rhythmic gymnast to an imagined series of perfect 10’s. She was positively (and literally) sparkling. However…

OOooOOOoooOOOoooOOOooOOOoooOOOooooOOoooOOoooOOOooOOO

There was a cold draft as Aloe froze in place and her porcelain-pale skin somehow paled a shade whiter. Desolation surrounded her. Hopeless struggle. Death. Everything that made up the opposite of victory as Aloe, the angeloid magia, slowly took in her surroundings stiffly.

"Uuuuu~"

Aloe slowly started to cry, but, biting her lower lip she took a great deep breath as she slowly but surely assumed a yoga pose.

"----No Aloe~ not today~ today you won't cry~ because you have found inner balance~ inner balance of victory~ Aloe Meditation~ Victory in~ Victory out~ Rising Aloe Pose~~~~~~~"

Lost in her own little world, Aloe’s lucky aura somehow enveloped the room. Maybe it was spurring her party mates to just get this over with and be done with her.

The Astorean vs Falderen war.
The battle against Titanius.
The mad Red Fever incident.
The defense of Camp Hope.

Stories people care about that are plastered all over the works of many a storyteller. Still, there are many stories that are woven behind the scenes. Stories that one learns if they are curious to dig deep enough. For Magi Heart, this was just a day of her life. She didn't have the desire to do anything else. Every day just finding another way to do what she needed to do. Sometimes in small ways, other times in large ones.

So today a group had assembled to explore some dungeon labyrinth place. People had gone missing and most likely died. Wendel normally would have just ignored a random request to go find out more... but there was a need for money when one lived their entire life here. As long as she lived within human limitations so to would she have to deal with human needs.

...and besides, as a heroine could she really miss out on the opportunity to finish off anyone that was still alive and unable to escape in there?

When Magi joined the group, she wore her non-combat attire. Expending energy was central to everything she did so she reserved it for when something actually needed to be taken care of.

"Hi! I'm Magi Heart! *Giggle*. What a big group! I don't think I've ever worked with so many people persons before. Eh... ?"

Her eyes squinted slightly as she tilted her head. There were a couple of people she recognized. One far more than the others. The friend of a friend should be considered a friend, and so a friend he was.

" @Cain Darlite! Super cool beans to see you here! Is Raina-chan not around? Or has her... issue gotten worse? You know... or don't you?"

Not really interested in his reply her faux smile of saccharine shifted to others she remembered. @Moonsong was the one that she had seen kissing the monstrous mecha that one time. She was probably still distraught over it.

"I know you lost someone. You loved him a lot right? To kiss a metal thing like that... I'm so sorry for you.."

Truly she was, as Wendel hated suffering but the opportunity to remind the woman of her loss for a sweet boost of negative energy was not something she'd pass up. Hmm, what was an otaku anyway? Oh well, it was a memory she had and it felt like it fit.

Then there was @Luthien who she recognized but wasn't sure why.

Since they were going to head into danger she prepared her mana in advance. A dim aura emitted from her body of dark pink hue. She had become quite adept at being a "walking torch" for this sort of thing.

@Aloe wasn't the only one with a song on her lips.

Greed and curiosity had become gruesome and callous, leaving behind only bloody reminders of the lost lives that once past by. Reminders bathed by cold flames, and a party that pursued the past with varying levels of interest and motivation, gravity and levity.

"Mhmm," Cain spoke, patting the nervous wreck of a Magia on the back as he passed by. "Don't forget to breathe, but don't breathe in too much either. As the erudite have discovered, what aromas you draw into yourself can be attributed to fine particulates in the wind. So if you smell blood and rot?" He smiled. It wasn't all that nice of him, of course, but if this was all that it'd take to scare her out of this labyrinth of lost souls? "That would be pieces of the dead you're breathing in."

Before her sanity could meltdown, the Flagbearer hopped ahead, waving at @Magi Heart as well. It was curious indeed, the places that the two of them met, but wherever it happened, it was likely that trouble was afoot. Fate moved in convenient ways, after all, drawing forth those capable of resolving ancient threats towards such sublime dens of cruelty. "And you're looking chipper today as well, Wendy!" He matched her smile with his own, equally as fake but many times harder to discern the authenticity of. "Sounds like you're aware though; Raina's a bit busy with the orphanage she's funding recently, so, alas, I'm here to slay whatever demons crawl within these dusty tombs." A fist was raised to bump with, but the attentions of an eternally immature girl was fleeting, and as Magi skipped off, Cain shrugged, his own ashen eyes catching a glimpse of a familiar face.

Who was that...ah yes. @Zelrius, the Flame-Haired Adjudicator, who had once done great work during the Falderen Invasion, holding off the leader of the Moonfangs alongside Mizuki, only to drop off the face of the planet when Titanius came knocking!

Curious, as always, how dangerous and yet peaceful the world of Terrasphere was, that world-ending dangers lurked about in every corner, yet every time they did, it was the same handful of faces that showed up.

"And is that the Judge Aflame I see?" Cain spoke, sauntering over towards him. "Certainly feels as if it's been five years since we've last been in the same conflict before. How, indeed, have you fared in the years since, Zelrius? I do hope this world is still but a game for you?"

All this chatter, all these greetings, and yet, the Flagbearer's subtle magic was already weaving itself. Heartbeats for tempo, gestures to inspire sound, and expressions to evoke emotions. In the blue-tinged dark, filled with past regrets and crushing failures, what he implicated was not the fear of the unknown, but rather...

...the first page of a story.

It's like the Adventurers Guild doesn't have more reliable members to send on some dangerous missions. Last time, Camp Hope. This time? A labyrinth, reminding her of the beginner's dungeon, but this time crank the eerieness up to 11.

There are a lot of people involved in this though, thanks to the Guild-League joint operation. Some of the faces were familiar to her from previous encounters, while some were fresh, like @Nymoria.

Moonsong nodded at @Cain Darlite, with who she hadn't had a proper interaction for quite a long time since last summer. There's also @Luthien and @Zelrius, who she waved at.

@Magi Heart had to remind her of that incident with the DEAD.Naught, a memory she wanted to lock away. Let's just assume that the girl's intentions were good. "Yeah, thank you." She promptly replied, not wanting to extend any conversation on that matter. The brunette thought the others would have been too preoccupied with the battle to notice the kiss, but apparently not.

Her wrath is better spent elsewhere.

"So, we're here. Let's talk about a plan." The songstress called for the group's attention, showing the map in her hand courtesy of the League. "Some places were already neatly labeled. It'll be safer if we navigate through them first." She proposed. The intimidating woman is far from a competent leader, but someone had to manage a group like this. "There are still unknown spots, but we'll look at them later. Does anyone here have enhanced awareness?"

It was surprising to receive a letter directly meant for him. The courier came bounding up, huffing and waving wildly to make sure he got the Pyromancer's attention in the market streets of Stokbon. Even more surprising were the contents of the personalized letter. A direct request from the Guild for him to go to a labyrinth in Brisshal with a team of other Starcalled, and do some poking around. Maybe even find some poor, lost souls. More importantly, bring their investments and valuable loot back.

Of course, he accepted, susceptible to the flattery of the summon. Meeting up at the entrance of which and forging in. Battle was clear here, as well as in the following twisting hallways. It was clear that there was no single foray, and that those who were sent before weren't simply lambs for the slaughter. So where were those others now?

He looked up just as @Cain Darlite had made his way over. This man was familiar - someone who he had seen more than a couple of times many years ago. The hat was a dead giveaway. "I think it has been exactly five years, if not longer." The Firebrand responded to the familiar face. "Nothing but a game, for better or for worse." Saving the Flagbearer the long, unending rant of emotions Zelrius felt about that whole ordeal. About how he wished that he could just stay in Terra forever. That was a discussion with someone else, for another day.

"Thanks for asking. Yourself?" Interested in how the - if he remembered correctly - support main's life was in the gap of their last meeting. Something about the Man's presence eased the darkness of the corridors, making it rather easy to follow along, and pick up smaller details. Though none easier to make sense of them. Instead, his eyes only saw the lingering particulates of spells that were old and gone now. The wash of hydromancy, the white streaks of aeromancy wind. They fought something here - maybe? Or maybe it was a puzzle, he didn't know.

It didn't help that he didn't give much focus to it, chatting with Cain, though separating when there was a gap in conversation when he saw @Moonsong 's polite wave. It had been months now, where had she been all this time? Her debriefing made it difficult to find a chance to say anything. That would have to wait until later.

"Magic was used here, before we came." He offered plainly to the others, trying his best not to state the obvious.

"Huh~?”

Aloe’s right cheek and eyelid twitched but settled a second later. Victory in~ Victory out~

“Now, now Cain~ all is one and one is all in the Aloe Aloe Universe~ We are all one in Victory~ For the poor unlucky dead~ we offer the salvation of retrospective victory by making their wagered lives have purpose~ we do not touch them with ungloved hands though~ because that would not be a victory for cleanliness~~~ of stars~ to stars return~ a constellation of connections~ death is not the end~ Aloe eagle pose~”
@Cain Darlite

Victory in~ Victory out~ yes~ Aloe is calm~ Aloe is sparkling again today~

"That is what it means to be heroes, that is what we do, and how I guide you, as the lovely muse of the indomitable, unshakeable, Aloe 9."

Then, Aloe gave a thumbs up to Cain, its meaning completely unclear. Hearing @Moonsong, Aloe lightly stepped to join the group. She was the picture of grace of a newborn fawn, elegant, but kind of shaky.

“I cannot read a map.”

It sounded like she was going to add a “but” there or something… but the words just hung in the air…

Then, the magia angeloid's head turned with a giggle.

“But of course you sense magic silly~"

She was speaking to @Zelrius now.

You have just entered the room divinely sanctified by I, Aloe, The Goddess of Victory~ You should be feeling like a winner any second now~ for the dice of fate answer my call~ Luck is (probably) on our side~ <3"

Just then, for anyone with a sense for divinity or fate, 3 glittering cartoonish dice seemingly fell from the heavens and lightly bounced off Aloe's head.

Their numbers were: 51 / 27 / 96.

Aloe, however, had not noticed this as they began to slowly orbit around her halo like three balls on a roulette wheel.

She'd no idea why she was here. All of the players around her looked like veterans, individuals who'd been at the game for some time. Individuals who would look down upon her, the newbie who didn't belong. She could see the bonds between them all - even if they were standoffish to one another, there was a connection there that came about from long times spent together, and experiences that made differences.

And here I am, javelin in hand and cocky as shit stepping into their story...screw them. She wouldn't say it outwardly, but she was frustrated by their very presence. Not because they were acting negatively to her, nor saying anything. It was just...them being there, a reminder that she had just started, and that others were still so far ahead of her in capability. A reminder of how inferior she was compared to them. You should expect that...some people have been here for years, apparently. They've gone through literal hell, and you just got here. Stop being a bitch.

Her frustration wasn't dissipating as she wanted it to, in fact it seemed to be growing with each passing step. Growling to herself, she pushed forwards, passing by the frontline members of the group's main body in order to see what lay ahead of them. As soon as she had broken away from the group, she felt her tension release slightly, as if just being away from them was calming.

Trying to focus on something other than the players she had found herself stuck with, she cast her eyes over the brickwork around them, eyes searching for something, anything, that would lead to some sort of discovery, or guidance on their path. Something to prove I'm useful here...

The skirted pinkette stayed off to the side, close to the wall but still near the middle position in the party ranks. @Cain Darlite had mentioned she was chipper and called her Wendy, he wasn't wrong this time. It had been a rough few days but afterward, Wendel had both lost and gained something. So while "joy" would not be an accurate word for how the dissonant felt, she was living as Wendy's mirror without much difficulty since. Her hunt for identity was not a concern today. With the healing of her body after such a severe injury she sustained at Camp Hope, the complicated mess that is Magi Heart was fine. If being called Wendy would make her job easier, yay for that!

For now, she was just spending time, feeding her urges and repeating them day by day. Years ago Magi Heart tried to be the "Magical Girl" of Terrasphere and failed. Then Wendel would be stuck doing prism hunts all the time and having her mind controlled by Vermillion. THEN Wendel gets stuck in a country that seemed to have a "Wendeldar" everywhere she went. Even after finally finding Raina, it had been others leading her around.

In the end, Wendel wasn't that different than Wendy after all. Lacking the personality intelligence, or mindset to lead or fully control her own life or know what to do with it. Now she had reverted to the base of her instincts again. Where the things she did have, magical strength and desire were all she needed. Magi Heart ends pain and brings peace, that's all she needed to do, period. Like, eat sleep repeat. It was easier the more she just stopped overthinking things...

So for this sort of dungeon party affair. She was focusing on whatever bits of grief she could get out of them and just hanging out basically. The blood smeared on the walls barely registered. She'd seen it all before after all.

She also noticed that a certain worm lover was here. Somehow he didn't stick out before. Running her hand along the bloody wall absent-mindedly she asked just loud enough so he could hear.

"Blood guy (@Yugam), Why do you use that stuff? You know... blood. Is it fun for you? Do you... like pain?"

Her past with Vermillion had a long-lasting effect on how she thought of that art. Travelers never could use it before she returned and now they could. She really had known nothing about hemomancy but learning about could prove useful if she ever had a chance to repay her old mistress for wasting years of her life.

Her expression changed to one of slight disgust at Aloe's antics. The angelic-looking girl was a magia after all and after Vintergard, Wendel's instinct was telling her to either avoid or wreck the thing. Worse still was her over-the-top roleplaying, which was right in line with Magi's early efforts.

"That is what it means to be heroes, that is what we do, and how I guide you, as the lovely muse of the indomitable, unshakeable, Aloe 9."

Cringe.

"Heroes sure do die a whole lot."

Wendel said with a mix of sincerity and resentment for the idealistic babble. Her magic slowly wrapped around her and she kept her heterochromatic eyes on @Aloe as she did. Only speaking again when her purple and black-themed "armor" had finished. She had never once stopped her slow stride through the hall during this.

"Miss Goddess of Victory? I've been a hero here for a long time, and you should maybe not dress in so much white for when things start to get messy. I don't dress this way to be edgy you know. Just something to think about kawaii mech *giggle*."

The red-headed man @Zelrius passed her by and Magi Heart had deja vu. Had she seen him before too? She shook it off. Wendel herself couldn't recall anything so if it was a Wendy encounter it made it all the more impossible to recall.

She played with one of her hair ribbons as she started to become antsy. Once her magic started to flow, her desire to do her job increased with it, and right now, there were only these people...

They were a talkative bunch, chatting and singing as they delved into the depths of the labyrinth, who's contents remained unknown for the most part. Entirely unlike Yugam who'd only given polite greetings to those he knew, namely Zelrius, Moonsong and Magi, and then remained otherwise silent. Luthien required no greeting, as he'd arrived with her. Beleg had sent for them once again, and just like every other time the two walked into his office, he told them about another package. Except this time, he didn't need it delivered. He needed it found.

Some explorer or another who'd disappeared in the labyrinth had been delivering one of the elf's infamous packages when they went missing, and apparently Beleg still wanted it delivered. Of course, the orders from on high were to find the missing explorer's so that was their main goal, but the pair's supervisor had made it plenty clear that he really wanted that package found.

Only more evidence that the silver haired elf was running an illegal drug ring or something, but hey, as long as Yu got paid, he wouldn't pry.

As they began their journey into the maze, Yu had helped to clear obstacles in the party's path, either by pulling them aside with his bare hands, or, if necessary, with a bit of help from his hemomancy moving and tossing the obstacles somewhere where they wouldn't be in their way anymore.

Apparently his use of the taboo magic hadn't escaped the keen eyes of a surprisingly young looking girl whom the man knew though.

"Why do you use that stuff? You know...blood," Magi had asked him as she'd run her hand along a bloodstained wall after he'd helped clear some debris that seemingly had come from nowhere. "Is it fun for you? Do you...like pain?"

Yu had little to give but a wry chuckle and a short response to the question. "No, not particularly," he'd said, "but I suppose the pain keeps me sharp." That, and it reminded the Hunter that he was still alive, a fact he found endlessly ironic considering how he had a tendency to kill himself with that very same magic.

When Moonsong had called them all around and presented a League map of what little was known of the labyrinth and asked if anyone was awareness enhanced, Yu had raised his hand.
"Not much, but yeah. I'm guessing we're looking to scout ahead a bit, or have someone who can take point?"

Orange Whistle ❰ Lore Seeker ❱

When Beleg had called her to his office the blonde had been ready to tear the fellow elven archer a new one—however her tune had immediately changed once she had spotted Yugam standing across the Violet Whistle’s desk. The faint satisfied smirk that crossed the older man’s lips wasn’t lost to her keen eyes either, though she chose to ignore it with a roll of her gaze before listening to the details of the new mission the man had for his two underlings… though having to retrieve a package instead of delivering one had been a twist the blonde hadn’t expected.

"Yu, look! Unnie is here," As the pair had neared the entrance of the labyrinth Lúthien’s eyes had quickly picked out @Moonsong’s familiar physique from among those gathered by the entrance, excitedly waving towards the woman to catch her attention as they came closer. "Hey Dee, glad to see a familiar face around here—oh, Zel’s here, too!"

Another wave was given to @Zelrius in greetings before a third—albeit smaller—figure had caught Lúthien’s attention’s next, crimson eyes straying towards the pinkette as she inadvertently stared at @Magi Heart for a few seconds longer than socially acceptable. The archer finally broke eye contact when Magi herself looked in her direction, Lúthien opting instead to focus her gaze back on Moonsong when the brunette spoke up.

”Does anyone here have enhanced awareness?”
"That’d be me, I have pretty good senses~"

The elf gave a polite nod and a smile as a greeting to the others present that she didn’t recognize, her ears catching the soft tune of the pinkette magia as they began to make their way through the labyrinth in question. Her attention turned then to listen as the Flagbearer spoke to others, a faint tingling that the archer had come to recognize as magic tickling her ears just slightly when she focused more on his voice, before her gaze moved towards @Nymoria as the racoon’s body language caught Lúthien’s attention.

Seems someone got up on the wrong side of the bed today… The frustration leaking out of the player was hard to miss for her elven senses, causing the archer to unconsciously frown in response to the emotion before Lúthien finally caught herself and made an effort to shake off the little funky mood. Instead she chose to focus on Magi as the girl spoke with Yugam, aware that the human didn’t seem to recognize her—or if she had then perhaps Wendel had just chosen to ignore her? Either way it seemed the magical girl’s attention was soon pulled towards the pink-haired magia, and Lúthien was more than happy to let them both be and figure shit out as the elf turned to listen as Zelrius pointed out some traces and damages to the corridor probably caused by magic.

"Yeah there was definitely a scuffle around here," Not that it was hard to guess as much, though when the elf crouched down to get a better look at the leftover tracks she couldn’t help but frown—unfortunately none were clear enough for the ranger to get a good idea of how long ago they’d been made. "Hopefully we’re going down the same path those missing adventurers and explorers took."

Small obstacles and hindrances were easily dealt with by other party members, Yugam included among them. With a party this big it often seemed like things were taken care of before the elf could even notice, causing her eyebrows to furrow slightly as she couldn’t help feeling a bit useless in turn. Perhaps that’s why she seemed to perk up quickly when the word scout was uttered by Yu of all people, the blonde immediately bouncing closer to Moonsong as the elf’s index finger pointed to herself.

"Want me to scout ahead for a bit? I’m pretty light on my feet after all~"

Exploring

Having come to Labyrinth alone, Nyancy decided that she would do some exploring. It was during this exploration that she heard some familiar voices echoing through the halls.

Guess I'm not tha only one in hea tryin' tah figyah out if theyahs any suhvivahs. Sounds like a whole squad decided tah come. Well, we can probably get moah done woykin tahgetha.

Listening to the voices, Nyancy carefully moved through the area until she saw the azure light illuminating some familiar and some not so familiar faces. One of these unfamiliar faces seemed to be dangerously away from the others. Walking towards her, Nyancy decided to comment.

"Yah scoutin' ahead? I just came from ova theyah. Didn't see nuthin' outta ordah. Also, not like it's any ah my business ah nuthin' but probably bettah to stick with tha group ova thea, safeah that way. Wea all in this tagethah ya know? Name's Nyancy by tha way. Nice tah meet ya." @Nymoria

After giving Nymoria her two cents, Nyancy walked past her and towards the rest of the group when she overheard a comment that made her frown.

"Yea, but so do villains if ya catch my drift." @Magi Heart

The small Felis gave wave to the group.

"Personally, I think makin' the old woyld a bit bettah is a good way tah go about things. So yah, let heroes be heroes. The woyld needs 'em anyhow."

Nyancy turned to the rest of the group.

"Hey thea everybody, I'm Nyancy. Nice to meet all of yas. Seems like wea all hea fah basically the same reason, eh? Find them missin' persons and/oah take out whateva it is that's makin' 'em go missin', right?"

Nyancy crossed her arms and nodded.

I came down hea a bit ago and decided to do some scoutin'. Up ahead. Anyhow, pleasuah tah be workin' tahgetha with yas.

Turning back around, Nyancy integrated into the group.

Unfolding the Unknown
Cycle 1 - Faint in the Dark

Venturing through the dark dungeon, the Starcalled decided it was wise to try and go straight to the core of the problem, wasting no time in trying to seek clues. After all, there could be still a chance to find the lost members safe and sound, so they should hurry as much as they could.

They moved smoothly, with some scouting ahead, while others took their time strengthening their power in preparation for whatever unknown danger could be lingering in the depths of the eerie dungeon.

Wandering, the group eventually found themselves before a great gate, with a sequence of levers pulled in a pattern that in the eyes of the most experienced adventurers, seemed like a solved puzzle... Which was perhaps, the last thing a witty explorer had done before being lost in the darkness of that secluded crypt place, forgotten by time and--

"Because She's The Goddess of Victory~♪" The girl sing-sang

The woman rose an eyebrow. "Are you paying attention?"

The girl snapped back to reality. "Ah! Yes! Continue!"

The woman shook her head in vague disapproval, clearing her throat and shifting the starry sphere that floated above her hands, zooming deeper into the group of nine adventurers. "... Forgotten by time and perhaps even the gods... Yet, ready to welcome the Starcalled into it, along with the guests it had received in the past..."

As they moved deeper into the room, the azure dim light didn't make it clear what could be lingering beyond what their eyes could perceive. But an unexpected clue came to @Magi Heart, with something gently tugging her wrist, giving her an instant urge to look to the source and spot a brief, pitch-black and girly silhouette, so dark that it was outlined in the dimlight.

It gestured to a particular colossal pillar, one among the many in the room, and just as soon as it appeared, it was gone.

Laying by the pillar, a man could be seen. His red whistle contrasted darkly with the faint azure flames of the torches. His eyes were just as wide open as they were devoid of brim, with his jaw hanging as his mouth remained half open.

His skin and muscles were as cold and rigid as marble, and yet, he continued to breathe, albeit faintly.

He, however, wasn't the only one there. The Starcalled soon noticed another, and another, and another. Victims of the same fate...

@Luthien could feel a crushing despair coming from the man, despite his completely unawareness of his surroundings.

... What had happened..?

At first, it was unknown, but @Nymoria's sensible ears soon caught something rumbling in the darkness.

@Zelrius, with his fierce magical sight, similarly noticed a magical glow in the distance, a pair of two azure flames, fainter than the ones from the torches.

The pair of flames dragged the attention of the group, which soon could notice it belonged to something much more menacing...

Explorer's League - Red Whistle)

C4 (Spawn)

The room the nine Travelers walked into was awash with a faint blue light, giving the grey stones a cold feel. A series of levers placed side by side, some pulled, some not, were the first thing that caught Yu's eyes as they panned around the larger space, filled with pillars. And Yu might have thought whoever had passed through the area ahead of them had successfully solved whatever puzzle had been placed in front of them were it not for the body slumped on the floor nearby. "Guys," the man said, pointing towards the corpse, drawing their attention to it before moving towards the body.

Kneeling down beside the body, upon first inspection, Yu thought the man was well and truly dead. But the shallow, unsteady rise and fall of the man's chest would indicate otherwise. "He's still alive," the Hunter remarked as he waved a hand slowly in front of the man's eyes. No response.

What happened here?

Reaching towards his belt the man drew a small knife, almost immediately drawing out an alarmed protest from the sword-spirit hanging from his waist. 'Yu, don't, you shouldn't-'
'We can't exactly go traipsing around with no idea what we're facing. We need information.'
'But-'

Yu didn't bother waiting to listen to more of Unmei's protests, instead grabbing one of the man's wrists, cold as ice, pressing the edge of the blade to the man's palm. "Sorry, this might hurt." A quick cut, careful to not slice to deep, and blood began to well in wound.

Just as Yu began to peer into the pooling blood, the room illuminated itself even brighter than before, the crackling sound of flame causing the man to turn and look for it's source. "Well, fuck."

"The map ends here, in this room. Be careful."

Moonsong was positioning herself in the front, to block off potential ambushes should those kinds of things happen. They arrived in an ominous, large room with bodies of explorers lying around. What happened here?

"Check the bodies, I'm going to move further." Leaving the investigation to the more keen-eyed travelers, Moonsong took careful steps forward before two faint blue flames suddenly lit up from across the room. @Cain Darlite quickly realized what was up and commanded the brunette to distract the unknown creature of the dark. "Got it! Everyone, stay back!"

The woman trained herself to ready her defensive weapons at all times. As she moved forwards, a few swords have already materialized on their own to cover the other adventurers behind her. The swords vibrated, acting like a wireless speaker for her harmonic magic, spreading her blessings across the starcalled adventurers through her simple, yet elegant hum.

Then, she let her Aura burn bright, pure wrath shooting from her back like a fighter jet to make herself more threatening, akin to a wild beast.

"Let's go. You're my prey now."

Dashing to close the distance, the songstress let out a high-pitched note to summon a greatsword from above, caught it mid-air and jumped towards the creature with a slashing motion, trying to get a preemptive strike in with a downwards jumping swing.

Zelrius followed along as they delved deeper, heading into it. Watching Moonsong, wanting to say something, but not really sure what that would be. Distracted by Aloe's sudden introduction, and declaration of being a literal Goddess of Victory. He gave a small laugh, lips curling into a smile. It was always so amazing how into character people got in this game. Were those dice?

It seemed they constantly crossed paths. The man with his visible veins, the blood pulsing through them. Overlayed on his clothing, making him more unmistakable. Him, and that Blonde Elf Luthien, who had gone on the expedition with him. Certainly they were players. Dating? In Real life, outside of the game probably. It was strange, Zelrius felt as if he was haunting their periphery at this point.

That thought was ripped away. The faint glow of azure flames in the distance. Those were different from the torches lining the walls. There was no hue to them, no lighting that came. Simply, a dark, flickering pair that pierced through the darkness. As though it was part of the man's UI.

"Something's ahead." He warned the others. Moonsong and The Blood-man had already noticed it seemed. The former of which moving toward. "Moon-" He weakly let out, stepping forward with an open hand. It was too late, and not firm enough. He'd be lucky if she even heard him. They didn't have the information to be charging in like that. But she was forward now, the others would be behind her soon. He knew better than to go in blind. It was a lesson he had learned the hard way more than once.

The man stepped forward, face stiffening as his gloved hand reached forward. A ball of red and orange flame wooshing into existence with the breat of wind. Beginning to get a look around, to see what they were up against.

@Nyancy @Magi Heart
“Oh haaay~~~! ~~Nyancy you were here~? Thanks for your help with the void bears the other day~ Hmhm~ did you hear~? Did you hear~? Surely~ you heard didn’t~ you~? I was praised just now~ <3”

Aloe was stoked, and I mean STOKED that someone had finally and ‘sincerely’ addressed her by her ‘title’. Aloe swiveled to look at Magiheart, the source of her bliss, with sparkles in her eyes. Recognition, at last. Magiheart had surely fully unlocked The Fortune Arcana in her social links in one swift blow.

"Oh wowwow~? A veteran hero~? Wowwowwow~! You DO look like a fighter! It's like you just transformed~! ~~~That's neat~! ~~~I wonder if ~I~ can transform as well if I put my mind to it~! I could be a ~ SUPER Goddess of Victory Aloe mode~ <3 ~ hm hm ~ <3 ~ or would that be too much divine loveliness for the terrazens of this planet~?"

Aloe shadowboxed the air enthusiastically as she practically skipped alongside Magiheart. She just kept talking.

"Wow~wow~wow~! I love the black too~~~ It has such a mature vibe~! I don't think it'd suit me though~ hmhm~ <3"

Aloe was all smiles, like a puppy, as though she’d just made a new friend. In her mind, she had, at least.

"Hmhmhm~ but~~~ Don't! You! Worry! ~These divine garments are rated for a direct hit from a Greater Skylance Ordinance~ no sweat~! It's probably all the asbestos~!"

Holding up two fingers, Aloe made a V sign. Peace and Victory. In her other hand was her golden staff with a glowing rainbow die on top.

"Hmhm~ even veteran heroes get tripped up by a pesky greek tragedy now and again~ but not when I'M here~ because like you said ~ ehehe ~ I'm The Goddess of Victory~!"

Aloe was rubbing the back of her head now, with a thousand watt smile.

"Ah~! ~But I shouldn't be too loud~ I don't want to distract our map readers as I guide them on the path of victory~ I'll just quietly sing an Aloe song of encouragement~"

"Aloe~ Aloe~ Aloe Song~
The Quietly~ Cheering~ Aloe Song~
The-Beautiful-Girl-Next-Door~ Aloe Song~

Victory's~ just a step away~ hey~"

hey~ hey~ hey~ hey~

^ Aloe’s tiny whispered song seemed to echo into the room filled with desolation as she felt an eerie chill slimily crawl allllllll the way down her back and pool in her cute booties which she gradually began shaking in. Cain’s war orders made the Angeloid Magia flinch with a little ‘eep’ as everyone began to scramble. Just what was going on?

Then, Aloe was given the light to answer, but it was hardly a gift she wanted to receive. She saw it, whatever it was, some monster, as the members of ‘The Aloe 9’ began to scramble. There were also people strewn about, others, the ones they were looking for as well. It was the big wall all over again. Slowly, gradually, Aloe’s hands raised to her head as she began to crouch down and try to return to zero, to an egg. Only…

Victory in~ Victory Out~ Aloe managed to maintain her poise! Hadn’t she overcome the wall? Hadn’t she brought victory? Hadn’t someone -just- called her The Goddess of Victory?!

"Everything is fine, I will guide us to victory, for that is who I am. Oh~?"

It was more like she was trying to convince herself than anything. Chances are nobody heard her.

It was around then, however, that Aloe felt it. Not the monster, no, but The Aloe Song reverberating and returning to her from the distant cosmic ends of The Aloe Aloe Universe. Yes, the Aloe Song was being carried on the heart of another. That, or Aloe was driven completely insane from stress. What follows is only from Aloe’s own perspective. We, dear reader, will never ascertain the full truth of the matter. But either way…

"Aloe Goddess Pose~"

Aloe’s arms extended like an old tv antenna as her eyes shut and she began to glow brighter and brighter. Her Magia Antenna Halo was spinning at frightening speed as her wings spread to mimic the effects of a radar dome. Aloe serenely walked with her eyes closed as her raised arms moved to track the ‘signal’ until she eventually arrived at the tile C4.

You see, The Aloe 9 did not include Aloe herself. There was another.

Aloe’s features strained, she was just on the cusp of reaching it, but her Aloe Aloe energies just couldn’t quite harmonize with the frequency and make the divine connection from this distance... It was right then that @Moonsong 's high-pitched battle note gave her the final nudge she needed.

Connected?!

The party grew by one when Nyancy joined them, the rather large group slowly making their way through the labyrinth that seemed to have been forgotten by time and even the gods of The World. Occasional clues let them know they were headed in the right direction—or, at the very least, the same direction the adventurers and explorers before them had also taken. The elf had stuck close to @Yugam as they ventured further, and when the party ventured into the large room her eyes quietly scanned over the azure flames that burned on some of the torches.

"That’s an odd color—"
"Guys."

His voice snapped the blonde of any thoughts she might be conjuring in her mind, turning over to look in the direction that the hunter pointed towards as he called for the group’s attention. The levers were the first thing she spotted, before finally noticing the slumped body on the ground by the pillar. "Oh, they’re still breathing—!" The words cut off abruptly when her eyes fell on the red whistle dangling from the man’s neck, a sinking feeling suddenly nestling itself in the pit of her stomach before an unseen pressure seemed to push against her chest and threaten to cave it in.

One hand reached for her own orange whistle, grasping it tightly as if the motion would help ground the elf upon realizing that this sense of utter hopelessness wasn’t born out of herself. The other hand reached for the nearest figure to herself and, with those that she did know having already continued to move, her fingers wrapped around @Aloe’s wrist as a result—perhaps a bit tighter than the ranger had intended to.

”Lúthien, Zelrius! If you two possess the ability to identify that creature, give me its name and I will divine the entirety of its existence!”

A sheepish smile was given to the magia when the elf realized she’d latched onto her arm, noticing the glint of a knife from the corner of her eyes as she turned to frown in Yugam’s direction. Before the archer could voice out any protest however the dark-haired man in the back had called out to others, her name being one, and finally the blonde noticed the large creature hiding in the darkness of the room. "Oh, what is that thing…?" Surprise and confusion crossed her features before watching @Moonsong rush towards it, and like the redhead Lúthien too was unable to move fast enough to stop the brunette. A faint sigh escaped her lips before she took in a deep breath, managing to suppress the feeling of despair that stubbornly clung to her shoulders as her hand finally released Aloe.

"Sorry about that."

A simple apology, but one Lúthien hoped would suffice for the girl, before her crimson eyes washed over the area where Yugam was currently at. The man, the levels, the blue flames… that intense feeling that threatened to consume her whenever her eyes fell upon the unresponsive explorer… were they all connected? And, if they were, then how could they use them to their benefit to avoid whatever fate had befallen this man and the others?

+22 Inspire from Cain

Red became purple in blue light, and the living, strewn against pillars, across cold stone, turned death-like in the monstrosity that lingered within gaps of azure. Despair, thick as molasses, weighed down the very air that stagnated within this chamber, and for all the brilliance that shone out of @Moonsong's defiance, the darkness persisted still.

Cain swallowed, his ashen gaze flickering towards @Aloe. The girl already looked as if she lost her marbles…if not for the fact that deities certainly existed in this world, regardless of how authentic they were. Let her invoke her gods. As for himself…

A crimson light bloomed through the chambers, @Zelrius's pyromancy casting greater light, while @Luthien peered into newly-illuminated space, mere seconds elapsing until the answer rippled out from her voice.

A name.

Identification.

Cain smiled, and wove it together.

Taboo magics surged through his veins, the darkness beyond the stars his inspiration as it drew all the disparate despairs of the explorers and adventurers trapped in their living deaths. Fates, fallen and distorted, flooded through his mind as pure energy, and from that energy, he partitioned his very mind, flinging perception down the infinite weave of future experiences to divine the entirety of this monster's capabilities.

It was an ambusher, a predatorial beast. A creature of the tomb, possessing a gaze that had witnessed end after end. A monstrous beast indeed, one that possessed strength enough to vanquish all nine Starcalled if the gods of fortune stood by its side. And yet, in other futures, it was laid low in an instant, shattered by the reckoning of abyssal magics and sanguine blades.

Through it all, the midnight-haired muse could hear it, louder than the orchestra of stars, louder than the hymns of time.

The flipping of pages, over and over and over and ove-

He breathed in, more deeply than he ever did before, snapping himself out of his benighted reverie, his mind tearing at the seams from the knowledge he plundered from futures that would now never be. Blood leaked from his nose, and with a grin, Cain wiped it off with the back of his hand.

"Resolve your spirits and open your senses," the Flagbearer cried, raising high the Battle-Banner of Embers Fallen. "For this beast-"

Pierce Weapons: Attacks on Vulnerable targets deal 250% of damage instead of 200%.

Harmonic Magic: You can use Inspire as a Bonus Action.

There were bodies everywhere, likely the other scout groups that they'd been sent to find. None were moving, and from the quick glances that Nymoria had sent their direction, she doubted that any would be moving anytime soon. Too late for them...but not too late to try and make things right. Vengeance, for those lost here today. We can do that, at least.

She rushed forward with a growl building in her throat, the thing in the central area of the room reminding her of dragons from fantasy games she'd played elsewhere. Whatever it was, it seemed content to let them come to it - something she was more than willing to do if it allowed. It's not even moving to get out of the way...something wrong here...

The thought passed through her mind even as she rushed forwards, stabbing upwards with her javelin as she tried to slide under and beyond the things front leg, hoping to score a hit while it was... preoccupied? Watching? Whatever it was doing. All that mattered right now was that it wasn't moving, wasn't reacting, which meant she had the upper hand. Maybe...or you've fallen for its trap... It didn't matter now, she was all in, trap or not.
