Personality
Out of game, he was one amongst many. A common sight, with a common face. A blip amongst the masses. But that was fine to him, he wasn't one to make waves or assert himself. A college student focusing on his studies and enjoying the small things in life when he could escape the books. It wasn't so much that he was antisocial, more just that he wasn't too sure of his own identity, his own desires, his own goals and personality. Instead? He floated between acquaintances, those that could maybe be called friends, taking on their interests and hobbies. Becoming a mirror of those around him, a social chameleon and emotional vampire.
Being so quiet and observant? It was easy for him to adapt to any new group he was able to insert himself into. Always on the edge of a group, retreating before it got too real. Before his 'friends' could realize the mimic that he was.
In game? It was different, he was able to hide behind the mask of the character that he made. Able to portray a different face and persona. Someone who was confident. Someone who did what they wanted, rather than what those around him did. It was the immersion into the new world and all the wonders it brought, that drew him slowly out of his shell. The rumors of players vanishing and dying be damned. He was finally alive.

Background
Come along and try something new they told him. His latest group of friends was actually one that he had returned to, feeling a bit more at home amongst the 'gamers' and 'nerds'. It was easy enough to pick up the various games they played. The money from his parents enough for him to afford a decent setup to stay competitive. Though that was before they made the change to VR. Purchasing the latest headset and various accessories, to meet the standard presented to him.
Starting with the usual simple intro games to get used to the systems, they drank and partied into the night. And after a few weeks he would find a new app on the display. A new game titled TerraSphere. Figuring that it was something one of the others had installed or downloaded for him to try and join them in, he'd boot it up. Always the follower and unaware of the game's history and what lay before him, he ventured forth into a light grey light. . .
