The small, sleepy, easily forgettable village of Serine

‧͙⁺˚・❀・˚⁺͙‧
Call to action!

When news of a fungal sickness reached Viridian Fields through a passing farmer, Kamala knew that she had to act to keep it from spreading to their farm. It seemed still a long way away, the ravaging sickness from a settlement far from the Fields and somewhat unknown. Kamala had to ask both Tim and Colleen, her closest friends at the Fields, if they knew where it was, and the pair of siblings had to spend almost an entire day asking around to help their friend gather enough information to piece the history and a general background of the place. Suffice it to say, it was not somewhere people found themselves frequently visiting, and most of them have forgotten it even exists. Fortunately for Kamala, as well as Ayna whom she asked for help and quickly responded favorably to her request, the passing farmer returned to fetch a forgotten satchel from the Fields and delivered both of them to the village of Serine.

"Magic has been effective at ridding individuals of the spore infection,"

The elf, with brown hair and a plain face, who introduced herself only as Brightleaf, apparently the village's foremost medical expert, continued sharing important details with the girls over a cup of tea. She seemed a long way from home, but Kamala did not bother asking about that. She didn't want to be rude. Unless that information was freely shared by the other woman, she'd rather not extend beyond what has been consented.

"But the sickness is spreading too quickly to contain. Those that become infected fall ill with a fever and even sprout growths, gooey and fungal in nature, before losing their autonomy. Some also release spores that infect others. Eventually, the sickness reduces all infected, including foodstuffs, into puddles of ooze."

Kamala winced at the description, the images in her head none too pretty. She stole a glimpse of the book on the table between them, which didn't help her distaste. It was so encrusted with lichen that its covers looked like they could barely be closed around the wrinkled pages. Still, she tried her best to soldier on and shift her attention back to the elf, mustering a weak but still warm smile to foster their cooperative relationship at the moment.

"Uhm, is this book...safe? It looks...infected."

She then turned to Ayna, clearly a little distraught and...concerned. Very concerned.

Helping an old friend.

There wasn't much going on in Ayna's life at the moment. At least, not in this world. So far, she's just been fishing, and loving it, but adventuring was much different, and in a way, the opportunity presented itself when an old friend, @Kamala Graham, reached out, asking for her help. Needless to say, it was an opportunity she couldn't ignore. She just wished it wasn't about some sort of gross sickness, but beggars can't really be choosers.

"That book better not be the source of the sickness," Ayna paused as electricity began to crackle in and around her eyes. "Because I won't hesitate to burn it right here and now."

The look of concern from Kamala was enough to set her off, and the fact that the book looked every bit...conquered by fungi wasn't that much help. The elf, however, didn't seem fazed by Ayna's threat. Instead, she simply sipped her cup of tea.

"There's no need for that. I found it, lost and unaccounted for, near the caves just outside of the village. The caves, mind you, are known for their rare fungal growths, but the lichen covering the book poses no danger. The book is safe."

Ayna squinted at the elf, trying to intimidate her into telling the truth, if she was in fact telling a lie, only to realize that there seemed no malice or malintent from the woman, especially after she reached out and touched the book herself, her elven hands running up and down the lichen on its covers. Gross. When the elf gestured for them to do the same, Ayna wanted to just get up and leave. However, a stolen glimpse of Kamala told her her friend was determined to help, so heaving a sigh, she warily touched the book...and felt nothing, not even a single instinctive feeling of disgust or anything of the sort. It was just...there.

"So, why are you keeping this book here?"

The elf simply shrugged and looked out the window. She smiled when she saw a couple of human children playing with each other.

"I'm focusing all my efforts on training new healers for the village, but this fungal sickness is something I just can't ignore. I believe the book's information could be helpful in preventing further outbreaks, so if you'd like to peruse it for yourselves, you are free to do so."

Ayna turned to Kamala and offered her the book. Between the two of them, she was the one who had more knowledge about plants and stuff. Ayna's brain was more on the practical side: engineering, and craftsmanship. Clearly, this wasn't her field of expertise, but she was more than happy to help Kamala where she was needed. In her head, that was "stabbing and shocking bad guys."

With little to no hesitation, Kamala accepted the offered book from Ayna and wasted no time in checking it out. She wasn't the smartest woman in the room, she never is, and she's cool with that, but she did know a bit more about botany and associated fields of study. From her real-world experiences and knowledge to those she had managed to witness and gather in-game, this was her mastery through and through, her field of expertise, dare she even think that. It was much easier for her to skim and scan the book, picking up new information and skipping old ones that would not be useful to them. Their goal was clear: Find a way to handle the fungal sickness.

"This....seems very useful indeed."

Through the book, Kamala picked up a story about a druid whose forest home was threatened by the undead. To fend off these invaders, the druid researched fungi and lichen, hoping to come across a weapon to protect their home. However, their research instead pointed them in the direction of supposed wards against death itself and turned them into something else. Strangely, the druid never discovered the cause of the undead incursion that inspired their research in the first place.

"You said you found this book near...the caves, right? Are those caves near a forest?"

Reading passages about healthy symbiotic relationships in nature made Kamala realize that the druid was also probably trying to stop the undead from multiplying. Druids usually viewed the undead as unnatural and tended to do whatever it took to preserve the natural order of things. Seems that the author really did their research on the undead, hm? But the rest of these pages, near the end... All the later writing read like mad rambling, barely comprehensible, a lot of which allusions to the desire to combine natural life and the undead, the kind of thinking most druids would balk at.

"Yes. I have a map that I can lend you if you wish to explore the caves and the nearby forest?"

Kamala nodded at the elf, and as she gestured for Ayna to take the map on her behalf, finally reached the very end of the book where several failed attempts by the druid to extend her life were recorded, complete with various drawings of dissected animals and humanoids, which made Kamala close the book in disgust. Some of the terms make no sense. Lady of Lichen? What does that number even mean? Kamala turned to Ayna with serious determination.

"We should probably start our investigation there."

Without missing a beat, Ayna took the map from the elf and immediately started reading it. When she made the change from Lyrwick to Dunnstads, the mines to the open seas, she was quick to learn cartography, though not without some great help from her lander crew. Basing on the forest's location, Ayna was quick to realize that @Kamala Graham was right: It was more than likely that the plague, the outbreak, started there.

"Well then, what are we waiting for? Let's get a move on!"

Ayna rose from her seat first, giving the elf a quick bow. She waited for Kamala to do the same, and once they both seemed ready, she led them both out of there. The elf, left behind, simply continued sipping her cup of tea, eyes closed. Maybe she hoped they would succeed without fail. That would be probably. Hopefully, she even prayed they'd be safe from the effects of the sickness as well, though Kamala would easily take care of that. There were other possibilities, though Ayna hoped those weren't in play. They'd found out soon enough.

THE FUNGAL CAVES
Just outside the village of Serine, Pormont

⋇⊶⊰✦⊱⊷⋇

Ayna didn't know much about fungi, especially not as much as Kamala did, but her time in Lyrwick had given her some insights into caves. For example, these ones outside the village of Serine, which they suspected was where the sickness in the village originated, seemed to be a natural cave complex, perhaps even created by eons of erosion.

One thing's for certain, as it was close to the forest, and therefore to a probable source of water, it would definitely host a wide array of lichen, molds, and fungi—an ideal location for druidic research. It does not seem suitable for habitation, though, as if it has fallen into an unhealthy state.

Not far from where they stood, the entrance looked ominous as a darkened cave mouth beckoning them from beneath the forest's canopy. Growths of green, brown, and gray lichen covered the cave mouth, and from the not-so-subtle sounds emanating from deep within, a small stream must be flowing deeper into the yawning void.

"This doesn't look very ominous at all!"

She sarcastically commented, trying her best to lighten the mood just in case Kamala was feeling a little hesitant to press further. If she wanted to just leave, Ayna wouldn't mind. She was only here for her, after all, and she'd just as quickly depart if she wanted to.

Kamala gave Ayna a quick smile, briefly placing a hand on her arm before her attention was stolen by faint crying coming from inside the caves.

"Did you hear that?"

Immediately approaching the direction of the sound, she zeroed in on a small stand of stones. What she found surprised her but couldn't exactly put her amazement into words, as the same tiny winged figure, whose head had been in her own hands, immediately gravitated toward Kamala when she offered her a warm smile.

"Oh, hey, little one... What's wrong? Are you all right? Do you need help?"

The tiny winged figure looked mournfully at Kamala, and then Ayna, and snuffled loudly, bubbles of snot forming beneath her tiny nose.

"My name's not little one, but I am also not all right... I used to live here with my friends, but one of them hurt me badly. I managed to escape, but my other friend is still captured. I miss them so much!"

Kamala turned to Ayna and gave her a look of pure sadness. She then turned her attention back to the tiny winged figure and tried her best to ask more information without aggravating their emotional state.

"What's your name then? I'm Kamala Graham, of Viridian Fields, and this is my friend, Ayna Nietzsche, Captain of the Mizar. Can you take us to your friends? We can help you rescue them."

The tiny winged figure turned to face the direction where she had supposedly come from, the deeper part of the caves, but then scratched her head.

"My name's Piewing, but, uhm, I can't remember where exactly. I don't even know how long I've been here. I'm sure they're still deeper inside, though."

Kamala turned to Ayna again, clearly sympathizing with Piewing, but this time, when she turned back to the tiny winged figure, she put on a serious look on her face, determined to help their new friend, companion, with their predicament as well. It would be like hitting two birds with one stone, right? Even though hitting innocent birds with a stone is definitely bad!

Ayna grimaced at how shrill the tiny winged creature's voice was. It was bad enough that they were heading inside a cave where a fungal sickness started, but getting ambushed by an annoyingly helpless giant fly of a Faerin? Doubt she's even a Faerin. Or if she is, doubt they'd want to associate with her. The look on Kamala's face, however, made her realize she would have to bear with the damned thing for longer than she'd liked. Anything for a friend, especially if that friend was @Kamala Graham.

"All right, all right! Enough yammering! Let's just go and find your fri—"

Ayna cut herself off at the exact moment her hand made contact with Piewing's shoulder. An image suddenly appeared in her mind, that of a female elf burdened by a gossamer cape made of what appeared to be mycelial threads. At the same time, she felt hunger and intense longing. For what and of what, she wasn't quite sure, because before she could make sense of everything, both the image and the feelings disappeared. Ayna shook her head, removing her hand from Piewing and almost stumbling backward.

"Whoa, that was Did anyone else see that? Or do I just need to eat something?"

Unsurprisingly, Piewing fluttered to check if Ayna was alright, before turning to Kamala with a look of confusion and disbelief.

"Are you all right? Is she all right?"

Ayna was quick to reassure the both of them, mostly because she didn't want the stranger to linger on what could be perceived as a weakness.

"I'm fine, I'm fine... Let's just get a move on, all right? Don't wanna get trapped here and stuff."

Piewing simply shrugged and focused all her attention on Kamala.

"Anyway... I can accompany you both deeper into the caves! Who knows? Maybe I'll remember some helpful stuff along the way!"

Oh, god, don't you ever shut up?! Ayna just rolled her eyes, shaking her head, as she gestured for them to press forward and even going as far as already doing so without even waiting for the annoying Piewing. What did I do to deserve this?

Kamala instinctively went to Ayna's side when the latter suddenly felt a little out of it. Or at least looked like she was going through something so suddenly. She rarely saw Ayna cut herself off, never mind seemed somewhat confused and disturbed from out of the blue. There wasn't even any sarcastic or hostile remark, both usually to cover up her vulnerabilities. Instead, she simply just moved on, which was very unlike her.

"Are you all right? What's wrong?"

Kamala didn't press further when Ayna insisted she was all right. She simply turned to Piewing with a similarly confused look before gesturing for the two of them to just follow Ayna's lead. When her friend felt ready, she'd share what was going on with her. That was always their thing. Ayna was just not as trusting as Kamala, especially in the presence of others, and for good reason. At least she hoped that was the only truth about the strange occurrence.

From the corner of her eye, however, Kamala saw a makeshift room Ayna had almost ignored. She warily went to investigate and was greeted by the spiderwebs and mold that covered everything inside the room. Along the far wall, there stood a rotting wooden table and a set of shelves. Glass jars, a mortar and pestle, and some sort of strange science-y supplies lie scattered about the space.

"Oooh! What is that? What did you find over there, Masala Gram of Berry Fields? Let me see, let me see!"

Piewing chirped loud enough to grab everyone's attention. Kamala, however, didn't even turn to face her, still searching through the bottles in the rooms, most of which were ruined, with only a few still in fairly good shape. Stowing some sort of potion just in case, she started browsing a mildewed notebook, upon which she found instructions for concocting out of fungi and a pint of blood from a faerin, all harvested within the past 24 hours, some sort of potion. She grimaced at that thought, as she waved and ultimately surrendered the notebook to Ayna so she could see the instructions for herself.

"It's nothing. Just some badly written notes for grown-ups. It'll just bore you, Piewing."

She gave Ayna a look that meant to make sure their companion wouldn't get their eyes on the notebook, fearing that it might be too gruesome for someone who just survived a painful betrayal from their friend. Kamala did wonder, though: Was Piewing's friend the author of the notebook? And if so, are they connected to the fungal sickness plaguing the nearby village? There was only one way to find out, and Kamala wasn't sure she even wanted to. She just didn't want to break a new friend's heart.

Receiving the notebook, Ayna took one quick look at it and furrowed her brow. Something about it seemed familiar, but what? One thing's for certain, though: It was genius of Kamala to give her the notebook. There was no way in hell Piewing would ever get to see it now. Ayna didn't trust the tiny flying creature, not with her life, not with @Kamala Graham's life, and certainly not with the new information in notebook. Wait, the handwriting! It's the same as that one on the elf's book! Interesting...

Pressing forward, the trio came across a cavern where stalks of slimy, violet mushrooms stood as tall as a person. Mycelial tendrils drifted from its domed roof, softly pulsating with a pale purple glow. From the corner of her eyes, Ayna spotted two humanoid figures lying suspended in the strands ten feet above the cavern floor, their flesh intertwined with the oozing tendrils. Without turning to Piewing, Ayna quickly asked her for confirmation on whether the same figures were her friends, hand already on her polearm. It could be a trap. It could always be a trap.

"Hey, Pieface, are those your buds?"

Pieface, I mean Piewing immediately protested at Ayna calling her the wrong name, though a closer inspection made her saddened at the sudden seriousness of their situation.

"Hey! Piewing isn't Pieface! ...but those aren't Piewing's friends either. Oh... Who are those guys? Are my friends all right?"

Just as Ayna figured. When things seemed too good or too easy to be true, they rarely are. Warily, Ayna held out a hand to gesture for both Piewing and Kamala to stay back. She approached as carefully as she could, drawing her polearm. Who are these guys? Friends? Foes? To her surprise, one of them answered back albeit only in her head. Help us! Please! It hurts... Everything hurts... Ayna took a step back, caught surprised. What the hell?! Are they...speaking to me in my head?!

But Ayna didn't get more time to consider her actions as the same pleas for help and complaints of pain rang through her head. It wasn't unbearable, more annoying than anything, but she realized she had to act fast or these two new people (or were they?) could sooner die on her watch.

"Hold on! I'm coming!"

Using her polearm, Ayna tried to free the trapped figures but ended up accidentally stabbing the mycelium. In retaliation, the mycelium lashed at Ayna, whipping her back. The purple-haired Beastfolk yelped in pain as she felt the mycelium's acidic tentacle eat through her armor, forcing her off her feet and on her ass.

"Gah! What the fuck are those things?!"

Ayna was starting to think that maybe they should have brought more people with them. People that actually knew what was going on. Like that lazy elf that hired them. Why wasn't she with them? Wasn't she the expert on all things fungi?!

Kamala initially thought the room would disgust her, but for some reason, it did not. Was it because of her growing prowess in Nature Magic? Or was it just because she's worked with worse overgrowth in her real-life job? Whatever the case, she was less disgusted than @Ayna Nietzsche and more intrigued at the strange plant life that had seemed to conquer the room. That was until Ayna tried to free what appeared to be captive figures and was attacked by their mycelium captor.

"Ayna! Are you all right?"

Instinctively rushing to her friend's side, Kamala did not notice that two of the mushroom stalks broke free from where they had earlier seemed stationary and come to the mycelium's defense. Piewing noticed them, though, and flew behind her newfound friends, using them as makeshift meat shields.

"Hey, you two! We've got two more unwanted fungi enemies out here! Quick, mow them down!"

At Piewing's screaming, Kamala turned just in time to witness the two fungi-infested creatures rise to defend their patron. Her instincts immediately kicked in, and without missing a beat, she fired an illusory arrow from an illusory bow, shooting one of them with nature's protective might.

❰ Worshipper's Marksmanship ❱

Unfortunately for her, for them really, her target held out its hand and shot a fungal arrow of its own, destroying Kamala's projectile and hitting her right in the shoulder. Kamala winced in pain, yelping, before her regenerative ability kicked in, healing her for a bit and preventing her from succumbing to any other effects.

"We need to go! Now!"

Kamala started to panic, her paranoia kicking in as she began to hear the familiar buzzing sounds as well as the intense heat underneath her skin, all of which only she could witness. It was the gift of Kurungaar Mother, a souvenir from her first death. Grabbing Ayna, she tried to get both of them out of there, avoiding a spore cloud from her target. No, no, no! Not again, not again, not again!

Ayna watched as @Kamala Graham tried to come to her aid and ate some sort of fungal arrow for all her trouble. Gritting her teeth, Ayna gestured for her to go on ahead and save herself, noticing she was now panicking. The purple-haired Beastfolk, however, stood her ground, discreetly charging her polearm with the very lighting coursing through her veins. Whatever the creatures were, they seemed to be very strong, perhaps even stronger than the two of them combined. Ayna could only hope to buy Kamala some time as she made her rational retreat.

"Don't worry, I got this!"

Ayna charged at one of the Mycelial Servants, the one closest to them, feigning a wide slash, only to instead thrust her polearm at the creature's feet, into the ground, without any warning. She discharged the lightning surging around and within the weapon in an attempt to electrocute the enemy before it could defend itself.

❰ Imperial Ritual ❱

Unfortunately for her, the Servant didn't seem affected by her lightning, though it did twitch a bit and had to step back, and even managed to swipe at her with a fungal polearm it just created on the fly, hitting Ayna before she could launch herself back and away from its range. The collisions led to a cloud of spores dispersing around them. Ayna tried her best to build some distance between their party and the damned fungus monster but she was still reeling from being hit that she wasn't feeling her usual speedy self. Fuck! Is this the end?!

Both of their opening attacks were rendered useless by the Mycelium's Servants. Ayna was suddenly feeling like she did not in fact "got this." What's worse was that Kamala seemed like she'd be taking the brunt of her failure, as Kamala wasn't even as fast as her. While she could still dodge the creature's spore cloud, her closest friend may not have better chances, if worse odds. Guess she just unintentionally fucked Kamala over, and not in a fun way.

Things weren't looking good for the Adventurers, especially for Kamala who was slower than @Ayna Nietzsche. The Mycelial Servants' Spore Cloud did a huge number on her, restricting her vision and almost choking her out. Fortunately for Kamala, she still had the wherewithal to move back. As soon as she found herself capable enough, she channeled the mending spirit of nature that appeared before her in surging, shimmering green as an illusory bow. Shooting it over her head, the bow turned into its own arrow, rising up, only to fall down and heal both her and her companion.

❰ Discernment ❱

Kamala was too distracted that her magic didn't seem to affect Piewing, though, who also seemed oblivious to the fact. Her healing also didn't bring out a lasting effect, as the same Mycelial Servant from before shot her with another fungal arrow, though its extra effects were neutralized by her Regeneration.

❰ Sweet Allheal ❱

Wincing in pain, she gestured for their tiny flying friend to take refuge and not be in the open. The last thing she wanted was to get her in trouble as well.

"Piewing, get behind me! Ayna, are you all right? We need to go! These things are too strong for just the two of us!"

+32 HP from @Kamala Graham's Heal
-65 HP from Mycelium Retal

Clenching her jaw, Ayna turned to @Kamala Graham and gave her a stern nod, as if agreeing with her exclaimed plan of retreat. After taking two steps away from the Mycelial Servants, however, Ayna did a quick 180, pivoting on her heels and striking the ground near the closest fungal monster's feet. Or at least she thought it was its feet. Without missing a beat, Ayna sent forth the very lightning coursing through her veins, electrocuting her target before it could protect itself.

❰ Imperial Ritual ❱

Quickly after making her attack, she launched herself back and away from their range, managing to build the much-needed distance between them and the creatures. Well, what remained of them anyway, as due to the amount of energy she bombarded it with, Ayna's target exploded into a cloud of spores that they managed to dodge rather easily. This time.

"Ha! Eat shit, you <basseal honks> pieces of <basseal honks>!"

Regaining her confidence after taking out one of the gross fungal monsters, Ayna stood valiantly in front of Kamala and Piewing, ready to defend them with her life. Well, more Kamala than Piewing, but shouldn't the overgrown mosquito be glad she was at least being saved? I would be.

"That all ya got, ya rotten vegetables?!"

There was still one of them, though, and of course, the bigger problem of the Mycelium that seemed to have trapped some innocent explorers. Or cave dwellers. Do people actually live in these things? Piewing doesn't classify as "people," though, so she's not a great example. Oof. Whatever came next, Ayna was certain they would be able to survive it. If need be, she'd sacrifice herself to keep Kamala safe. We won't get to that point, though. These vegetables are getting eaten tonight! Omnomnom!

Although Kamala was caught surprised by @Ayna Nietzsche's Sneak Attack, she realized she really should have expected it. After all, they've been in so many battles, and most of the time, she has always been too stubborn to retreat, even if that was her best option. Heaving a sigh, Kamala simply let out a yelp when one of the fungal monsters exploded into a cloud of spores, though like Ayna, she, too, was able to dodge it better than before.

"Careful!"

Once more, Kamala channeled the mending spirit of nature through the Seed of Serenity (Accessory), which glowed just above her chest, the mystical pendant suddenly fluttering in the wind, anchored by the string wrapping around her neck. An illusory bow appeared in her hands, and Kamala aimed upward, tugging on its string. As soon as her fingers let go, the bow itself turned into green light and shot up in the air, only to fall back, down toward them, and heal them both.

❰ Discernment ❱

Her own regenerative ability then manifested, following suit, a visual of a mushroom spirit popping over her head and disappearing in a puff of mending spores that added more health and vitality for her own survival.

❰ Sweet Allheal ❱

Most would assume that pouring all your healing on your striker, your offensive companion, would be ideal, but this wasn't a shooter game. Kills weren't priority. If Kamala fell first, Ayna would easily follow. She needed to keep herself alive and flourishing, so she could continue supporting her friend where it mattered. Besides, it was Kamala who could revive Ayna, not the other way around.

+25 HP from @Kamala Graham's Heal
-65 HP from Mycelium Retal

With @Kamala Graham healing her back to top form, or at least that's what all her adrenaline was whispering to her, Ayna felt more confident than ever. She started to believe that they could take their antagonists down any time now, fuck any concern that may have arisen from almost getting beaten down by the creatures. After all, they've already destroyed one of them, right? With that in mind, Ayna rushed the remaining defender, which quickly mirrored her attack, and allowed it to strike her down with a potent blow. As she tasted the very dirt under their feet, she grinned from ear to ear.

"Gotcha, ya dumb piece of shit!"

She immediately stabbed the confused creature with her concealed polearm from out of nowhere, channeling her own lightning through the Spear of Stormy Night (Polearm) to surge forth into the Mycelial Servant's side and pump it with more than 1,000 volts of electricity, frying it from the inside out.

❰ Imperial Ritual ❱

With an eldritch scream, the creature started to slowly burn. Ayna could smell its entire wretched existence begin to cease, and with a disgusting explosion, not unlike a popped pimple on a teen's face but with more squelching flora than pus, it finally had enough of her power. The creature could no longer deny her strength. Ayna instinctively covered her head and own face before rolling away to try and get out of all that gross liquid, the aftermath of another Mycelial Servant biting the dust, but barely did. When all was said and done, parts of her were covered with the remains of the fungal demon, and parts of her felt like hell.

"Holy fuck! That actually worked..."

Now all that remained was the Mycelium itself. Ayna wondered if she'd be able to survive its wrath if she continued down this path. Using her spear, she propped herself back up to her feet, slow and steady. Despite the pain all over, she turned to the remaining opposition with a devilish grin. Your turn, ya gross fuck!

When @Ayna Nietzsche charged at the remaining Mycelial Servant, with reckless abandon to boot, Kamala couldn't help herself but scream in horror! Had her friend lost her mind? Did she just recklessly throw herself in danger with no qualms about what would happen to her allies? Of course, Ayna had and did! She's Ayna!

"Ayna! No!"

Kamala didn't even notice she had taken one step forward, halted only by Piewing pulling her back. Both were then caught off-guard when their downed friend suddenly took down their fungus foe. Kamala rushed to meet her friend who managed to flee most of the aftermath of the creature's implosion, and quicker still, heal everyone she could, though at her own expense when her skin unintentionally made contact with the fungal remains. The danged thing felt painful, like a scorching splash of boiling water. Although Kamala had to wince in pain, she still managed to focus on her magic, channeling the mending spirit of nature and shooting its healing arrow in the sky, so it would fall back down to them and bathe them with green nurturing magic.

❰ Discernment ❱

A mushroom spirit then popped over Kamala's head before disappearing in a puff of mending spores that ensured she would survive to ensure her friends' survival as well.

❰ Sweet Allheal ❱

Turning to the throbbing Mycelium, Kamala placed a hand closer to her chest. She was worried if it could still summon more of those powerful servants, though the fact that it only protected itself with the same number as its captives made her think otherwise. Were we fighting the ones it trapped? No... They wouldn't have defended their captor. Unless... Her reverie, however, was interrupted by Piewing's screaming.

"Quick! Finish it off! Before it can do anything else! We need to free those people it trapped!"

Kamala, and even Ayna, have been too engrossed in the battle, fighting to keep their lives, that they barely paid attention to their new friend. She wondered if Piewing had any ideas about the creature they were warring with now, with its prisoners, but at the moment, all those questions were secondary to their immediate concern: making sure whatever the thing was, it wouldn't overpower them again. Piewing was right, and they had to act fast. Maybe even faster than ever. They wouldn't survive any more of its defenders.

+20 HP from @Kamala Graham's Heal

DISADVANTAGE on next Save Roll

Ayna gave @Kamala Graham a quick nod of acknowledgment and gratitude for the healing but immediately perked up at Piewing's screaming. Even if she didn't trust the strange flying thing, Ayna could at least admit that it had a point. A great point. They had no time to rest on their laurels. The Mycelium must be destroyed as soon as possible.

"On it!"

Ayna charged at the Mycelium, pointing the Spear of Stormy Night (Polearm) straight at it. Discreetly charging it with the very lightning coursing through her veins, Ayna intended to do another feint to perform her very successful sneak attack that had decimated its protectors. She would make it look like she was aiming for it directly, but at the last minute would thrust the weapon on the ground underneath the Mycelium instead, and then and only then, would electrocute the damned thing to free its captives. Solid plan, right? She could already taste victory, grinning from ear to ear, as she threw herself at the fungal mass with reckless abandon.

❰ Imperial Ritual ❱

Unfortunately for Ayna, she botched the attempt. The creature whipped a tendril at her face, which she managed to avoid, but it also struck her feet, which she did not manage to avoid. She stumbled as she moved but luckily found enough footing to prevent herself from smacking her own head against the floor. Instead of being able to follow through with her planned sneak attack, however, Ayna simply just thrust the weapon's lightning-charged blade at the bulk of the Mycelium, angered that her brilliant plan was foiled by some gross fungus. Damn you, you disgusting blob!

After basically tasing the fungal mass, Ayna used her weapon to push herself back to safety, avoiding the spore cloud that the creature emitted as a response to her attack. She instinctively covered her face, even though she didn't have to, already far from its range. The act only served to cover her scowl, as Ayna was still pissed that the Mycelium managed to outsmart her. The MIT thing was definitely a mistake, and now there was further proof that she was never meant to join them, and she never will. Not in a million years.

"That blob's smarter than it looks. Maybe you should just blast it from far away, Kamala. It might just counter my next strike again."

Ayna whispered her suggestion of a battle tactic to her ally and close friend. Despite the fact that it had managed to thwart Ayna's full attack, she knew that it wasn't as strong as before, what with its protectors gone. Maybe it needed time to make more of them, but they weren't going to give it any. Time was of the essence, and time would be their greatest weapon against it. Ayna readied her weapon to charge again but only if Kamala wouldn't agree to her plan.

As if on cue, and perhaps as a final act of self-preservation, the Mycelium swung at @Ayna Nietzsche with its tendril. Fortunately for the worse-for-wear lancer, her druid friend saved her butt by tackling her to the ground. Kamala grimaced as a loud thud came with the impact between their bodies and the earth itself. She had never done anything of the sort, throw herself to save a friend, though to be fair, she was never given the opportunity to do so. She was almost glad at the chance, but then she quickly realized how terrible of a thought that was.

"You all right, Ayna? Stay down for a bit. Please."

Annoyed at the attempt on Ayna's life, Kamala slowly rose to her feet, clenching her jaw and scowling like never before. She focused all her ire on the unmoving Mycelium. Kamala was fine with playing safe, simply supporting her champion instead of committing violence against another aspect of nature, but she's had enough. Ayna was down on her last luck, her last leg, and as much as the speedster was being stubborn, she was still her friend. Kamala loathed the thought of her friends being hurt, especially in her presence.

"THAT IS ENOUGH!"

Channeling her magic, she screamed as she hurled a bolt of concentrated magic at the Mycelium from where she stood, a safe distance away, the very same magic bolstered by nature's spirit that manifested illusory flora throughout the furious counterattack. Not that the Mycelium had the opportunity to be wowed by the splendid aesthetics. Piewing didn't even had the time to look in awe. Their lives was on the line, after all, and no amount of visual beauty can distract a survivor from trying to not die.

❰ Reflection in Mind ❱

When the blast collided with the fungal mass, a spore cloud exploded from it. Kamala grabbed Ayna and threw the both of them far from its range. She had expected the cloud, as it had never failed to come for them, but she did not expect to actually destroy the Mycelium. Some sort of psychic backlash ended up engulfing the room, and Kamala, perhaps even Ayna as well, received visions of an endless forest of tower-sized mushrooms, a woman wearing a holy symbol of sorts running between them crying gooey, ochre tears, and a skull-splitting cry of anguish. The pain of the backlash (or was it that cry?) was too much for her to bear, and Kamala ended up basically knocking herself out.

To say that Ayna was more than impressed with @Kamala Graham taking out the Mycelium all on her own would be the understatement of the year. To say that she was surprised when Kamala tackled her to the ground after doing so was just appropriate. Ayna had expected the spore cloud as well, as it always came for them every damn time they attacked the Mycelium and its Servants, which made her think they were all bloated with the damned spores. That would explain a lot. What Ayna did not expect was the forceful blast from the destruction of their antagonist, and in one fell swoop, she lost consciousness altogether.

Ayna received the same vision as Kamala, with the forest and the woman, and so much more, though none of it made any sense to her. To be fair, however, she barely had time to make sense of it all. In her head, she saw herself reaching for her friend, shouting her name, but nothing made sense: the room was grey and vapory, and everything was silent. She couldn't even hear her own voice, which was a first for her in this game. As the image of Kamala seemed to be getting pulled from her grasp, and her attempts to grab her seemed in futility, everything faded to black once more. All she could hear was one final mention of her own name.

Tired, weary eyes slowly opening, Kamala looked around to find her already outside of the cave, the bright, glistening sun almost forbidding her to. From where she was sitting, against a sturdy oak, she could see the cave's mouth at a safe distance. Closer to her, however, was @Ayna Nietzsche who seemed still unconscious, lying prone on the ground. Kamala gasped and quickly crawled to her friend, checking to see if there was anything she could do to help, needed to do to save her friend. The warm buzzing underneath her skin only served to intensify her panic.

"Ayna?! Are you all right? Do you need help? Healing? Wake up, please! Ayna, wake up!"

As she cradled Ayna's head, as if the latter were her own child, rocking back and forth on the ground, her attention was once again drawn toward the cave. For a moment, she could have sworn that she saw a pair of familiar wings, though the familiarity was left to the silhouette and nothing else. There was more to the vision, the shadow, she caught a glimpse of, something more sinister, more dangerous. What was it? The Mycelium?

No, the Mycelium exploded... And what were those visions she saw during the psychic backlash? The endless forest of towering mushrooms? The nun running through those same massive mushrooms while gooey, ochre tears streaked down her face? That skull-splitting cry of anguish? Could Brightleaf know more?

There was only one way to find out for sure, but she needed to make sure Ayna was okay first. Once she'd wake up, they'd need to pay Brightleaf another visit. Probably the last time for quite a while. Just to let them know what had happened there. Wait, weren't there two others trapped by the Mycelium? Where are they? What happened to them? More questions than answers. Kamala does not like blacking out.

Ugh. Ayna groaned as she started to come to. What the ever-loving <basseal honk> was that? Felt like a truck just ran me over. And then an entire whale was dropped on my body. She tried to open her eyes right away but grimaced when the blinding light of the sun prevented her from doing so faster than she would have liked. Ayna had to struggle to put a hand up over her eyes as the familiar silhouette of @Kamala Graham came into her sight, a vision of home.

But then another silhouette walked into her view, slower, calmer, just right behind Kamala. Ayna immediately felt the need for speed to protect her friend, but when she tried to push herself off the ground and back to her feet, she couldn't. Instead, she grimaced again as her other arm failed to push her even just an inch off the ground, off Kamala's arms and grasp. She clenched her jaw and started to channel her lightning but only sparks heeded her call. Come on, damn it. Come on!

"Ah, here you are."

A familiar voice came from the mysterious silhouette, and when Kamala turned to look behind her, she didn't seem scared or fearful for the two of them. It took Ayna much longer to realize that it was just Brightleaf carrying an open umbrella and not another mushroom monster. The elf then moved in front of Kamala, beside Ayna, and held a hand for each of them. Ayna could not understand Elvish, or Yladian, if it was even either, so she just watched as warm light emanated from Brightleaf's hands and warmed her up from the inside. Once she was done, she turned to them again, with a serious look on her face, and asked them what had happened:

"So, were you able to find out anything more about the fungal sickness?"

Ayna tried to share the visions that she had seen, that they had encountered a Mycelium creature with two captives that were not with them right then and there, but regretted that there wasn't anything more, anything else. She tried her best to share all that she knew from the encounter, but even if she was already healing from the battle they had found inside the cave, she herself was quite confused with everything else.

"Know anything about the creature? The visions? What about the tiny flying creature that was with us, Pieface or something?"

Ayna felt her head with her hands, trying to make sure there were no unnatural growths she couldn't see. It all feels bigger, like it was bulging, but it was probably just in her head. Great. More stupid jokes. Come on, brain. Focus.
