Open Providence Finding More Difficult Terrain

Regan had grown tired of Eastern Brisshal. The creatures were all the same, she had already fought goblins and bandits to her heart's content, and to make matters worse it felt like every time she tried to do anything she ran into someone that had just entered the world for the first time. There was nothing wrong with that, but again Regan had grown tired of it. Thus, with the whole world laid out in front of her, Regan had decided to travel.

Preferring traveling to areas close to the wilds where she could hunt and grow stronger in comparison to any city where she assumed there was nothing to do but talk, eat, and sleep, Regan traveled to the Providence area where she was told life was much harder. It was a mountainous region and apparently the rocky terrain and wild forests made for quite the challenge. For Regan, this was exciting.

"FINALLY OUT OF EASTERN BRISSHAL!"

Regan stretched as she walked the rugged and lonely mountain road.

"Maybe now I can face something worthy of my time."

Along with the beasts of the forest, Regan had also heard of raiding parties and bandits, though of a hardier stock due to the landscape. This suited the woman fine and as she walked the lonesome road, she quietly wondered to herself if she would meet any other adventurers in the area.

Oh my god.

Madison blinked, staring at the woman bounding down the way with an energetic spring in her step.

Oh my god, is she--

--Yes, she is. Yes she fucking is.

This was supposed to be an easy payday. Scout the fucking road for ambushes. The main caravan was a mile or two back. Plenty of time for her to hop on her ghost horse, scour every last pothole and shrubbery and suspiciously-placed roadside boulder for things of ill intent. The roads through Providence were very much the opposite of that for anyone who carried goods up and down them.

The scouting report she grabbed at the last town had been pretty accurate--some grubby highwaymen were lying in wait. But for all of Madison's ability to melt into the shadows and catch glimpses of her targets' souls with her Deadeye, they managed to spot her first. And after nearly taking a couple of her toes with some warning shots, the whole lot of 'em were now stuck in a stalemate. Madison clutching her repeater tightly, crouching in a bush; and all of them peppered throughout the area. Was she surrounded? Deadeye was good at a short range; but it was not omnipotent.

And then here comes this hourglass with a megaphone for a mouth, strutting up like she's fresh on the road to see the wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Madison grits her teeth, rests her rifle across her lap, and furiously taps her temple twice to load up a quickmail message.

Mail

Use your inside voice and get off the fucking road! Bandits up ahead!

Regan had never received mail in game before and the whole thing was actually pretty confusing.

Who the hell is sending me messages? Better yet, how the hell does anyone send a message? Ah, that must be the UI thing that my little bird friend was talking about. I haven't really had need of it. I guess I could reply, but what's the point of that? Seems like it's too much work. I'll just figure it out later. Still, bandits up ahead?

Regan let loose a devil's smile, her fangs hungry for blood. Unfurling her great bat wings, Regan began to lift off. If there were bandits up ahead, then they were her prey.

Rising up to get a better view, Regan could see the muzzle flashes of several weapons spread out through the wooded area on the side of the road. From the looks of it, most of them were faced away from Regan as though they were shooting at something or someone that had caught their attention.

"OH HO! NOW THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN! HAHAHAHA, AND HERE I THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A BORING JOURNEY INTO THE MOUNTAINS!"

Seeing one of the bandits alone hiding behind a boulder, Regan made her move.

"HAHAHAHA! WATCH WHERE YOU'RE LOOKING PREY, OR ELSE YOU MIGHT GET EATEN!"

The bandit turned but it was too late. Regan swooped down quickly grabbing the man by the throat and carrying up. Reaching a comfortable altitude where she knew the other bandits could see, Regan opened her mouth revealing her large fangs and plunged them into the man's throat. Blood spewed forth across Regan's face and chest. When she was done drinking, she simply threw what was left of the man away like trash. His body hit the ground below with a dull thud.

"NOT A BAD MEAL, BUT I'M STILL HUNGRY! HAHAHAHA! MAYBE A FEW MORE OF YOU WILL SATE MY THIRST!"

As shots began to ring out, Regan smiled and quickly flew into the forest where she found a large branch to perch on. She was fast and the tree tops would make for perfect coverage from the bandits.

"THIS ISN'T A BATTLE ANYMORE, HAHAHA IT'S MY HUNTING GROUND! I HOPE YOU'VE LIVED A GOOD LIFE BECAUSE THAT LIFE ENDS TODAY! KNOW THE MONSTER THAT HUNTS YOU! I AM REGAN, FUTURE VAMPIRE QUEEN OF THIS WORLD! HAHAHAHA!"

Madison was used to having her warnings ignored. More often than not, she welcomed it; because holy shit was post-failure gloating one of the biggest rushes of serotonin she could ever feel in her years and years of miserable life.

This time, however, that feeling was abject horror. This bitch read her warning, and interpreted it as an invitation instead.

"Oh my god," the gunslinger whispered with jaw sufficiently slackened as the blonde's voice blanketed the entire valley. "Oh my god," she said again with that much more urgency as red wisp after red wisp after red wisp popped up in her field of vision. The bandits were making themselves known; the gunfire was soon to follow.

So much for assuming you were going for a unique build with your yeehawmancy there, pardner.

Madison swore and cursed, as was customary for her since she was eight or nine, and waited for her chance. When she finally popped out from behind the bush, her eye was caught by the sheer bloody spectacle that unfolded in the air before her.

And for a brief moment, she wasn't sure about who she needed to shoot more.

Another crack of gunfire answered that question, of course. Madison fired a couple rounds back, the second one catching one of the bandits in the shoulder while a third thudded against his chest and dropped him. The vampire who named herself Regan (rather (incredibly (impressively)) loudly, at that) discarded her juice box and dove into a nearby tree. Several highwaymen quickly broke for the road--and Madison was quick to catch them in a hail of lead.

The raven ducked back behind the bush, and began reloading. Her eyes furiously scanned a UI keyboard that she pulled up in her field of vision.

Regan still didn't wholly understand how to use the UI system or the mail for that matter but from the looks of it, it was rather helpful.

Four on my side... perfect.

Hopping from branch to branch as quietly as possible, Regan looked for small movements, sounds, the scent of blood, anything that would give the positions of any of the bandits she was hunting. She didn't have to wait long. Suddenly she smelled it like a fragrant aroma, one of the bandits had been struck in the leg by a stray shot. Due to her hemomancy, she couldn't just see and smell the blood, she could track it.

Following the trail of blood, Regan finally caught sight of the injured bandit who was currently being helped along by another.

This is going to be fun...

Regan lay in wait for the perfect opportunity. She wanted to end them quickly. Maximum deadliness, maximum fear, and minimal threat of them attempting to fight back. Watching and waiting, Regan suddenly found her opportunity. The injured man needed to rest for a moment so his ally, another bandit, set him down against the tree. Regan watched as the pair took the time to reload their arms.

"YOU REALLY SHOULDN'T HAVE STOPPED... BECAUSE NOW I'VE FOUND YOU!"

Looking up frightened the two men searched for where the voice came from but saw nothing. Regan was too fast as she moved from tree to tree, circling around the pair until she dropped to the forest floor moving into striking position. Fear visibly gripped the two men as they began shooting wildly into the trees, unfortunately for them, Regan was already next to them.

"I'm right here..."

As the uninjured man turned he met with Regan's blade and disposed of in an instant.

Tossing the first bandit aside after quickly draining him of blood. Regan moved towards the injured bandit now frozen in fear after seeing his partner dispatched so horrendously. Regaining some composure, the bandit reached for his firearm but Regan quickly kicked it away. Grabbing the man by the neck, Regan pulled him in close.

"I told you didn't I... this was my hunting ground and you and all your friends are simply my prey."

Opening her mouth, Regan's fangs found the bandit's neck.

Two bandits down.

You know what? This Regan chick was right.

Sometimes, you just need to go loud.

By this point, the rest of the gunslinger's surroundings have dissolved into a monochrome soup. The vampire (?!), a neutral green. The highwaymen on her side of the road? A nice, unfriendly red that pulsed with the fear and adrenaline that coursed through their bodies.

"Gotcha', fuckers," Madison growled as she shouldered her rifle and melted into the shadows. And when we say melted; quite literally melted. Her consciousness remained close to the ground; she could see (mostly) perfectly. Blurs of blacks and grays darting past her as she zeroed in on the first of two blood red auras. Leaping out of the man's shadow, she drew both of her revolvers. The barrel of the first caught the him on the back of his skull with a sickening crack. The second exploded in a flash of fire and thunder, neatly putting an extra hole in the back of his neck before pushing him to the ground.

"Shit--SHIT!!"

Madison whipped around, her revolvers falling on the second bandit as he tried to run away. He got three steps before the first bullet slammed into his shoulder and the second caught him in the heart. He fell without uttering another word.

Hearing more gunshots, Regan sped towards the sound only to see two dead bandits and a woman carrying firearms. Perching above Madison in a tree, Regan called down.

"Your the one that's been sending me messages I presume?"

Jumping down from the tree's canopy and floating down softly on her wings, Regan stood before Madison. Blood stained Regan's face, chest, and dress though she was smiling as though she were enjoying herself. Looking down, Regan examined the lifeless bandits."

"HAHAHA! You're strong! I respect that. You use those weapons well."

Regan nodded towards Madison's firearms.

"You don't mind if I have a little snack do you?"

Before Madison could respond, Regan opened her mouth, suddenly the dead bandits' blood started to flow into like a floating river. After a few seconds she was done and wiped her mouth on her forearm.

"Just like fine wine... HAHA! So I'm assuming you have a way of seeing, tracking, or hunting prey? I can track things myself fairly well as long as they're bleeding, but I bet you have something even better than that, don't you? After all, you've been consistently aware of where everyone has been during this little skirmish. Are there any more bandits?"

Regan looked around excitedly. It was obvious she was hoping there were more.

"Yeah, that was me."

Madison quickly scanned their surroundings. A sea of gray, with one green blip--Regan. She blinked away her Deadeye and color returned to her world.

Well, one color in particular. A lot of it. A sickening amount of it, actually. All over the grass, the trees, the bushes, the road. All over the grinning woman in front of her.

She blinked Deadeye back on.

While the vampire glutted herself on bandit blood (presumably the equivalent of shoving your head under the nozzle of a soda machine at Wendy's), Madison made busy shoving bullets into her revolvers. "You're pretty good with those teeth of yours yourself," the raven said, not looking up from her work. "We're in the clear. That was the last of them. Just a small group of highwaymen, waiting in ambush for a caravan I'm playing lookout for."

How close were they at this point? All in all, the fight lasted maybe ten, fifteen, twenty seconds tops. Once Regan swooped in, that is. Madison had been there for a while, scoping them out though, right?

"I can see the souls of others," the gunslinger said, popping the cylinders of her guns back into place and holstering them. "Faint outlines of them, over short distances. Usually color coded based on their levels of aggression. It's kind of neat, really." Regan's was still the only one around. She blinked it away, returning the world to its actual colors and just hoping to ignore all the blood everywhere. "Thanks for the help, by the way. What brings you up these roads?"

"See souls, HAHA! THAT IS INTERESTING! I imagine it's indispensable since you use firearms. You'd know exactly where your enemies were before they even knew you existed. Quite a way to fight..."

Regan grinned.

"As for me, nothing but boredom brought me here."

Shrugging, Regan continued.

"I've spent the last several days testing myself against the creatures of Brisshal which was exhilarating at first, but after you've defeated everything once it loses its luster. That's when I decided to leave and travel here. I heard that the creatures and people here were tougher and of a hardier breed. I guess what they said was true."

Regan licked her lips.

"These bandits or whatever they were, had much more experience than the average Brisshal goblin. They also had better weaponry and battle tactics. HAH! Looks like my coming here was the right decision! HAHAHA! HOPEFULLY, THERE'S A LOT MORE LIKE THIS FOR ME TO FEAST ON!"

Laughing hardily, Regan turned to Madison.

"And yourself, what brings you to these parts? Work?"

So, she's a murderhobo.

Not the kind that lander parents tell stories to their kids at night to scare them out of banditry; but something far worse.

One who gets bored.

All the flying and shouting and laughing and the blood sucking parts? Sure, that's some scary shit. But one who isn't content with their lot of squishies in their little corner of the world, and is willing to rampage into different zones in search of things that will fight back more and more?

So do I just.... flip on PvP? Triple-tap her in the face and call that my good deed for the month or something?

Madison's hands fell from the grips of her revolvers, but she kept them close. "Just be careful. Everything in Eastern Brisshal's weaker for a reason. Out here, in the 'real world'? If you can call it that? Let's just say you're lucky you had shock and awe and a pair of six-shooters on your side." On the flip side, Madison considered herself blessed that the vampire swooped in when she did--she wasn't terribly keen on her chances of taking out the lot of 'em by her lonesome.

"Just... uh..." The raven glanced down at the carnage and mangled bodies that littered the road. "Make sure you leave some for the rest of us, yeah? There won't be many quests left if all the bad guys are taken out."

She sniffed the air. "Yeah, I'm out here for work. Scouting for a caravan headed north, making sure the roads are clear." And then, a thought! "There's another choke point a little ways ahead. Maybe a mile or two. A bridge crossing a river--at least that's what my map says. Care to help me scope it out? I'd be willing to split a bit of my pay."

"HAHAHA, more bandits? I LOVE THIS PLACE! A PERFECT HUNTING GROUND!"

Regan readied herself to travel to the point Madison had mentioned.

"A bridge crossing a river huh? HAH! All we'll have to do is get on either side of them, run them into the middle and drive them into your fire. It's not even a battle tactic as much as it sends them into a slaughterhouse. I'm in."

Regan thought for a moment.

"I don't care about the money, you can keep it. I just want to see what these bandits are made of! Hopefully, it's blood..."

Suddenly, Regan began laughing to herself.

"HAHAHA, SOME PEOPLE JUST WANT TO SEE THE WORLD BURN AS THEY SAY!"

After laughing for a few moments, Regan calmed down.

"Though to be honest, even if get them all to run on the bridge and then hit them like fish in a barrel tactic doesn't work, it won't matter. Between you picking off stragglers and me decimating their numbers it should be an easy clean-up job."

Regan grinned.

"Let's get moving, then."

While the two temporary allies traveled up the highway, Madison couldn't stop hearing the vampire's word rattling around in her head. "SOME PEOPLE JUST WANT TO SEE THE WORLD BURN." And the more they soured her mood, the further behind she fell.

At fifteen paces, her right hand fell to the grip of a revolver.

It would be so, incredibly easy. Just a little warning tap and a quick trip to the revival house; a lesson of "hey maybe get your shit together and don't be a dickhead power fantasy player, huh?" delivered in the most dickheadish, power fantasy-ish way possible. Maybe losing one of her three lives before a UI lock would get her to straighten up and clam down a bit. Besides--ain't nobody around to witness the act anyway; and if Regan said anything to anyone else, it was the newbie's word against the vet's.

Madison's hand relaxed, and fell back to her side.

With her heightened senses, Madison heard the river long before she saw it. "The bridge should be just up ahead." She quickly verified this on her UI's minimap. "If you wanna' take to the skies and head on over to the other side, I'll start looking for a good hiding spot near the bridge."

@Regan

"HAH! SOUNDS GOOD!"

Unfurling her wings, Regan shot up to the skies looking for anything that looked remotely like a bandit. Flying circles around the area, unfortunately, Regan saw nothing as of yet.

Damn, and here I thought I'd see them first thing when I got up here. I guess I'm going to have to wait. How boring...

Finding a tree with a branch that overlooked the bridge, Regan landed and sat lazily on a branch. I suppose when the fighting starts I'll hear it. Still, I do hope those bandits hurry it up, I could go for a snack about now. Kicking her foot as she waited Regan looked up to the sky.

I wonder how much stronger I need to get before I am considered the strongest in this world. I'm sure I have a long way to go but I must be making headway. I wonder how strong the current vampire queen is...

Regan continued musing on her own strengths and how to get stronger as she waited for Madison to message her that the bandits had come.

As Regan took to the skies, Madison sunk into the shadows. A puddle of black stuff on nestled snug between the roots of an oak tree at the side of the road; the perfect hiding place. Until a squirrel or fox came around and got curious, of course.

She watched from her little spot while the vampire circled above. Once Regan came to rest on a tree branch, Madison had a thought.

Taking a deep breath, the gunslinger closed her eyes and focused. The world around her turned gray as she pushed her consciousness out of her body and away from the shadows, further and further still down the road. Minutes passed while she searched for their quarry--there! Six little blips of swirling yellows and oranges; and one stronger slap of color across the canvas.

Stronger than the others.

Madison's consciousness snapped back across the bridge, and without another word she moved into action. The shadows clawed and twisted their way across the bridge with blinding speed, darting up the road towards the group slowly meandering their way. Just as her soul senses picked out, there were seven. Six plain-ass, sinewy, scruffy bastards with chipped weaponry--and one motherfucker who looked like he kept all the spoils to himself. A double-wide brick shithouse of a man, with a mean-looking battle axe strapped to his back.

This one was hers.

Slowly, the pool of shadows rolled across the road, behind the bandits. None of the seven were paying attention; busy as they were discussing how they were going to wait for the caravan at the bridge, then get them in a pincer attack with nowhere to run. Blissfully unaware, of course, of the one that was about to be sprung on them.

From the darkness, Madison flicked open her UI and fired off a quick message to the vamire.

Mail

Your DoorDash order will be arriving in thirty seconds.

And then, she struck.

Gunfire roared up and down the road, the bullets screaming wild overhead and to their sides. The seven outlaws turned to see Madison dripping in darkness as she emerged from nowhere, the scowl twisting her skull-painted visage into something horrible. The next volley of shots from her revolvers sent the smaller bandits scrambling towards the bridge--and the vampire that awaited them.

Madison let all of her shots miss their targets except for one. The big bastard caught a bullet in his calf. Not lethal; but enough to slow him down. Regan could handle the others; but if she had just come from Eastern Brisshal, then this guy might be too big of a bite to chew.

But for someone like Madison? A bored vet with too much time on her hands and too many skill points to dump into her shit? Yeah, she'd be just fine.

The big bruiser was down on one knee, cursing up a storm. Madison lowered the barrels of her revolvers towards his head. "I'm afraid this road's off limits, friend."

Having received word from Madison that their quarry had arrived. Regan smiled. Standing up on the branch she stretched her arms and back quickly before jumping into the fight. This would be fun.

Walking through the forested area, Regan her the scamperings of the bandits. Crunching leaves, a broken twig, too much noise for prey.

They don't even realize they're being hunted...

Walking carelessly, Regan spotted the first bandit hiding in cover behind a tree. He seemed to be trying to pinpoint where Madison's shots were coming from. Approaching from the side, Regan called out to the man.

"YOU'RE A BANDIT, RIGHT? WOULDN'T WANT TO KILL THE WRONG PERSON!"

The bandit moved for his firearm, but before he could Regan threw her sword pinning the man's arm to the tree.

"HAHAHA! I WAS JUST ASKING A QUESTION AND YOU WERE ALREADY PULLING A WEAPON ON ME?! GUESS YOU ARE A BANDIT, HUH?"

Making it to the man, Regan squatted down to his level.

"Don't worry, I'll make this quick, little bandit."

Opening her mouth, Regan went for the bandit's throat. Screams would echo through the forest.

Easy.

Easy easy easy easy.

Everything is so goddamn easy.

Perhaps this was the price she paid for having played for months before the servers went down. All those tasty delicious skill points to redistribute wherever she wanted upon return. Maybe after the travelers like her left, the common rabble got complacent and weak. Maybe she just happened upon the perfect selection of new masteries that complemented each other like they were the last pieces of the puzzle.

Either way, Madison was making short fuckin' work of the big bastard with a disappointing amount of effort being spent to do so.

He was monologuing about something--for all of her Hyper Sense-enhanced senses, Madison heard none of it. She couldn't give a shit less. This was only work; the caravan needed to head north. Important supplies, you see. Shit's gotta' get delivered.

While his lips flapped in the wind, Madison finished reloading her guns. While he beat his chest and rose to his feet, she leveled the barrels at his head. While he charged, she pulled the triggers.

Thunder rang throughout the clearing. The bandit leader took one more step, stumbled, and crashed to the ground.

"WHERE ARE YOU GOING? HAHAHA! RUNNING AWAY?! PATHETIC! COME BACK AND FIGHT YOU, COWARDS! I'LL KILL ALL OF YOU BEFORE YOU CAN EVEN LAND A SINGLE BLOW!"

Chasing the bandits through the forest as they ran for their lives, Regan laughed as she gave chase.

"YOU KNOW WHAT, I'M GETTING A LITTLE TIRED OF THIS! HAHAHA, CARMILLA!"

Calling her blood sword to life, Regan's blade came alive and flew forward toward the nearest enemy. Moving faster than the bandit could run, the blade cut the bandit's leg. The bandit hit the ground hard, as Regan came up behind him, staking him dead with her blade before another moment passed.

"THAT'S ONE MORE DOWN! ARE YOU SURE YOU DON'T WANT TO TURN AND FIGHT! I'M NOT LETTING A SINGLE ONE OF YOU GET AWAY AFTER ALL! HAHAHAH!"

Spinning like a buzzsaw, Carmilla surged forward slicing through one bandit after another leaving nothing but a gory mess until there was nothing left. It only took minutes but the bandits were disposed of. After drinking her fill, Regan flew back towards Madison.

"TOOK CARE OF MY SHARE! HAHAHAHA! THEY DIDN'T EVEN TRY AND FIGHT! AFTER I TOOK OUT THE FIRST THEY JUST STARTED RUNNING FOR THEIR LIVES! HOW WORTHLESS! NOW, WHERE ARE THEY! DEAD. NOTHING BUT BITS AND CHUNKS FOR THE BEARS TO EAT, HAHAHA!"

Madison smelled the slaughter long before she ever saw it.

Sure; she could've easily dipped back into the shadows. That's all centered around light and magic; in the darkness, one couldn't catch a whiff of blood and death. Actually, whenever she was hidden from sight or zipping around from shadow to shadow, the only thing she faintly smelled was burnt marshmallows, for some reason.

Regan met her halfway. The vampire was absolutely covered from head to toe in crimson. The blood of the bandits, soaking into every inch of fabric of her clothes and every pore in her skin.

Madison, meanwhile, had nothing but the dust of the road on her boots.

"Watching one monster bubble up from the shadows with fire and thunder only to chase them into another made of razor blades will do wonders for destroying the will to fight back, I reckon." The gunslinger began rooting through her UI inventory, carving out a small pile of gold coins. The money popped up in her other hand, neatly collected in a small cloth pouch. "Here. I appreciate the help. Take it. Maybe buy some clean clothes or something--all that gore's going to stink up the place."

Regan frowned then sighed and took the bag of gold.

"Fine, I'll take it. Not that it's really necessary. WEAPONS ARE CHEAP AFTER ALL! HAHAHA! Oh, and blood cleans easily."

Waving her hand, the blood that stained the woman drew itself up from her dress and skin and accumulated into a globule that Regan then ate.

"See, easy peasy. Well, this was fun. I have to say hunting bandits never gets old. Fodder like this just makes me realize how much stronger I've gotten. Maybe after this, I'll go stalk around the forest and see if I can find something bigger and meaner to tear apart."

Regan grinned then turned towards the forest.

"YOU HEAR THAT TRASH? ANYTHING OUT THERE WANT TO TRY THEIR HANDS AT KILLING ME! MAYBE I'LL EVEN LET YOU GET A HIT IN BEFORE I RIP OFF YOUR FACE! HAHAHA!"

Regan turned back to the woman

I'll admit, I'm a little jealous of your weapons. They look fun to use. Still, can't be carving someone up and getting them to look you in the eyes as you do it. HAHAHA! ANYWAY, BE SEEING YOU!"

Regan spread her wings and took flight towards the forest.
