Sometimes, all someone really needs is a change in scenery...

These last few months had been quite hectic for Nicole. Terrasphere and its world had become a bigger and bigger part of her life, much bigger than she initially expected it to be. And while this had brought many experiences she'd certainly cherish for the rest of her life, it also brought a good amount of added stress to her day-to-day routine. Doubly so with how chaotic the virtual world had turned out to be past the fall of Szofrit.

And as a university student with olympic aspirations, it wasn't like she was lacking in stress to start with.

She needed something to take the edge out of her mind, and she knew nothing better to do it than some good old competition. And after checking with her sensei at her gym for upcoming tournaments and a somewhat lengthy hyperloop ride, the Atlanta native found herself checking in at her budget hotel in the Big Apple at the early morning. Chucking her light baggage to the side as she launched herself onto the bed with a sigh, she looked at the ceiling as she laid there for a good while.

"..........Nope. Can't sleep. Ugh."

Not surprising, given the long trip to NYC, with more than her few share of naps along the way to keep herself well-rested. The brain is the most important muscle!

Or is the heart...

...

Both seems good.

"Well, no biggie. Just means I gotta seeeize the day!"

Getting up from the bed, she spied a pair of running shoes in her baggage with a smirk. This wasn't her first time in New York, and she had a pretty good ideia of how to spend all this surplus energy.

---

"Bam bam bam, bam bam bam, Killing in the Name Of! Dun dun duuun, dun dun duuun..."

And to Central Park Nicole went! With earbuds blaring some good old rock to get the blood pumping, she jogged her way through the pleasant scenery, doing the occasional air-punching to the chorus of the song as required and petting the occasional good boy who's owner allowed it. Given the short-notice of her participation in the tournament, she decided to compete a weight-class above her usual one as to save herself from a grueling weight-cutting program. This also meant that she was generally just more free to just focus on winding down and getting her mind out of things.

...Yet perhaps there were some things she shouldn't get her mind out of, like the view immediately in front of her.

As she lost herself in imaginations of grandeur and epicness powered by hard music both outside and inside of Terrasphere, Nicole unfortunately lost sight of what was in front of her. Quite literally, in fact, as she found herself being rudely awoken from her mind kingdom by the mother of all alarm clocks: Physical Impact.

"GUH!"

Harper was a tough enough cookie as to not be really hurt by something like this. Heck, her daily training involved worse impacts. But she did realize this was not likely the case for whoever she had bumped into. Feeling incredibly embarassed, Nicole quickly took off her earbuds and looked to check on who she had crashed into with a worried gaze.

"Darn it, I'm so so so SO sorry... Are you okaaa...?"

Nicole's line of thought quickly derailed once she got a better look at person she bumped into, the white-haired athlete ending up looking up and down at her awkwardly for a good bit with a puzzled expression.

Those black twintails...

Those magenta eyes who look completely done with Nicole's bs...

Could it be? She had never met someone from Terrasphere back on the real world, but they were almost a perfect match... It was worth a shot.

Besides, she wouldn't be the first stranger that thought she was a nutcase if she ended up being wrong on her hunch.

That Morning.

"So there might be changes. Lack of contact... until the situation is resolved."

"Hmmm...."

"Maybe we could get together for lunch before I get swept into my duties again. What do you think Little Chelsie-chan? I could borrow a compan-"

"No thank you, Hitomi. I'm not making any plans after the 1st. It's all booked. For the foreseeable future."

"Ahhhhh that's a shame! Well there's always that tiny chance right? Remember even if I work at Nexus, you can call me Auntie, Oba-chan or whatever strikes your fancy!"

Chelsea sees the notification a chance to escape. She needed some time and even if these two meant well. No one was going to save her. No heroes, here or elsewhere. Only herself and her own foolishness. Trying to find her father in a stupid video game? Really? She ended up a laughing stock.

"Miss Nexon. you want to go? If you would ,Ms Aki ."

"Of course of course... I just worry for the girl . You feel the same right? By her side while I send out the big sisterly energy she needs from afar! Alright then, you should make whatever decision is good for you. Since I am being left out of the spicy details. Well I'm off to Europe. I'll send pictures of the site! I'm like a professional spy on a dangerous mission! !Is this what those games are like these days? *CLICK*".

"I thought you were an Aunt... now you're a sister. Yeesh... I have to go. Gregory, don't bother getting the car. With the traffic, I need to conserve gas...."

Gregory tried, she knew, but what could he do when she was surrounded by the horrid bunch of greedy elite scum that did nothing but kick her when she was down. Her connections had fallen apart and now all that was left was...

A offer she couldn't refuse.

Central Park

But for now. She needed someone she could tolerate. Even if by only a marginal degree more than the norm.

Central Park, It was nice. A source of nature in a world that was choosing to leave it behind. Chelsea came alone. Yes, there was always the chance another weirdo would show up and come after her for what happened the last time she was in IT. No one seemed to want to tell her exactly what happened but she had pieced it together enough on her own.

She wasn't caring as much anymore.

The disappearance of her father, the fact she entire Nexon empire was pulled out from under her. The fact that VRS is in such a state that she had to let off several employees.

...and that THING still existed.

The Nexon name was becoming more of a curse than a blessing. Yet Chelsea still held on to some sort of care. It just was fading away.

The Nexon pulls out her phone and checks to see where.. BAM!

Yeesh... again? Why does this always happen to her! Incoming weirdo!

""...N? That you, Songbird? Does the name Harper ring any bells for ya?"

Chelsea's stoic expression didn't even change at the name of a very annoying stupid was mentioned. The Calculator... wait no!!!!

"S-S-Stupid tiger! Shut up...."

Chelsea was in a state of shock. This person just came right up to her, and nearly outed them. No, the stupid tiger didn't matter just like the stupid monkey. Self preservation is paramount. She . .. outed HER.

Silence.
It felt like not even a bird chirped. Songbird or otherwise.
Perhaps if there was a sound. It was Chelsea's stare. as the two just sorta...

Stood there.

*STARE*

She was weird!

They lived so close together that one could omit the "close" and it would still hold true! So why then, did they decide to meet here? Separate ways of travel. Outside. Away from a 'secure' home. Or maybe it was Skyler herself who had become too lax on security. A public space. Lots of people. After all, any of Chelsie's properties could have eyes and ears for walls! Or something like that.

Indeed, maybe she had become the weird one. Maybe, Skyler had gotten too comfortable. However, Skyler ultimately failed to think that maybe the young Nexon wanted this chance to just get away from it all. Either way, there wasn't much time to ponder much more. If they had a secret meeting, they would get a secret meeting!

Getting a notification on her smart glasses, Skyler prepared to beeline towards her boss, albeit too late. Seeing black and white mix and crash, the blonde hid behind a tree for a second. Staring. Glaring. Spying. Maybe, just maybe, it was the enemy! Statistically, white-haired people had a higher chance to be a villain than non-white hairs!

In that case...

...

"Hey!" Skyler cut between the two girls, glaring at the... TINY! Woman whose name she did not know.

What do you think you're doing to my... friend!? People don't just bump into each other unless they intend to! Mighty sus.

Misinterpreting the situation.

"Are you okay?"

She asked with a more concerned voice towards Chelsea.

Welp. That insult just about confirmed it. This was Lady N, in the flesh.
Harper would honestly be elated in any other circumstance about meeting a fellow Starcalled back in the real world. Ever since she joined that world, she couldn't help but always wonder what some of the people who she had fought world-ending threats with looked like outside of the game. She couldn't do that with those who are UI-Locked, of course... Which only meant more for when she eventually met one of those who could still leave.

Yeah, she'd definitely be excited... If said person wasn't trying to stare a hole through her face right now.
To be fair, it wasn't like she expected a warm hug or anything from N. She didn't even get that much when they fought for each other's back inside The Calculator. Still, she didn't feel like they left in bad terms of anything... She didn't even beat her up as Harper when she went cuckoo with Szofrit!

Thus, this whole awkward situation left her in a bit of a loss for words as to how to respond. So she figured she might as well check on the state of her crash victim. Surely she wouldn't get mad at that... Right?

"Uhh... You okay, N? Did you hit your head bad on the way down? Please tell me you didn't get concussed... Here, how many fingers I've got on my hand right now?" She held up three extended fingers to Chelsea's face.

As she attempted to do so, she'd have her line of sight with Chelsea interrupted by a odd fellow. Seemed like a girl their age, but covered up head-to-toe and wearing sunglasses like a spy from a comedy show gag, spouting some truely gourmet non-sense. Which earned her a raised eyebrow and a very annoyed gaze from Nicole.

"...Yeah, and every car crash is obviously premeditated murder then-What the heck are you even saying!"

She had the mind to speak more, but held herself once she saw Anne turn back to check on Chelsea. From her tone, she could tell that the two were close, the white-haired girl taking a step to the side to give the two some space as she cupped her own chin in thought.

This was definitely going poorly... Might as well go with the oldest trick in the book to break the ice.

"Alright, we definitely started on the wrong foot here. So, since calling ourselves by our in-game names all the time is kinda weird..."She placed a hand in her chest, giving the two of them the warmest smile she could."Name's Nicole. Nicole Fairbanks. Pleasure to meetcha two! And once again, sorry for running you over!"

What do you think you're doing to my... friend!? People don't just bump into each other unless they intend to! Mighty sus.

Chelsea's eyes shifted towards the newcomer. Someone she had expected originally to be here. It was supposed to be a chance to relax away stresses that Nexon Manor and Virtual Reality Strategy tended to supply in high doses for the raven hair.

....friend?

Chelsea Ronda Nexon didn't have friends. She had employees, and stupids she needed to maintain face with while being looked down upon for her situation and age. Especially after Danielle faded away. There was no one to even consider that now.

Maybe... maybe a little bit it felt nice.
Just a little to hear that.

Not that she needed it of course!

Seeing Skyler dressed like that wasn't surprising. Chelsea knew that their lives could be in danger. Anyone connected to IT could be offed at any time. There was more and more evidence to support it..

And... maybe it was Chelsea who had become the stupid. Daring to show her face in public while she spiraled down towards being nothing more than a criminal in the eyes of VRSA. Perhaps even the world itself after the yet to be determined number of lives she ended in that death trap.

"This is an acquaintance. She isn't stupid enough to show her face in public like you..."

Trying her hardest to not wince, she looked away but her pupils remained locked again on this lavender haired annoyance. The fingers flashing before her. Her vision blurred a moment. Nothing out of the ordinary. Her eye sight was never 20/20 to begin with... outside of... THAT.

""...Yeah, and every car crash is obviously premeditated murder then-What the heck are you even saying!"

"That's a naïve belief. It is the 'could be' that matters. Human beings have no self control."

Her voice went from cold to something uncanny in how she spoke those words. It vanished as soon as it came, although her natural tendencies would make something like this difficult to notice for 99% of people.

She uttered a tiny sigh and let things play out. The stupid even gave her name. Too late to do anything about it now.

"Nicole. Stop. Mentioning. IT."

She looked to Skyler,

"Lets go get something to eat. Or just away from the eavesdroppers in this park... and surveillance systems."

"I'm saying what you're saying. A lot of car crashes are calculated 'accidents." Skyler replied in 100% seriousness. Though, it seemed like the two knew each other beforehand.

COINCIDENCE? ... Surely not. If not for one or the other getting 'here' on purpose, then for the sheer fact a higher power surely had its hand at play!

Well, N seemed fine with grabbing a bite. "The name's Skyler..." Even with all the POSITIVITY that this... Nicole... was now trying to vibe, Skyler held her reservations. But in the worst case, they'd find out more info of an enemy! And in the best case, the white hair would just be another acquaintance.

"Food sounds good. Do any of you two know a place?" Giving the impression that Skyler was well intending for the trio to do something together.

Yet, there was still one puzzle piece missing.

"IT? In-game names? Are you playing video games, after all, Chelsy!? I thought you were all boo-ring with those." A cringe joke, Skyler wasn't aware yet.

The more Nicole talked to these two, the more confused she got. It was like the both of them lived in a reality separate from hers, especially when Chelsea corroborated Skyler's spiel about the car crashes. And then the whole stuff about showing their faces in public...

She figured you had to be at least a bit loose in the head to play Terrasphere, and she wasn't denying that she herself was a part of that demographic, but... These two clearly outranked her in that aspect. And she wasn't even sure if Skylar played Terrasphere!

"Gotcha... Just so I can know, who do you think built the pyra-"

She decided to stop herself midway, before letting her head drop slightly as she shook it. Better not to antagonize someone she wanted to befriend, even in a joking manner.

"-You know what, nevermind! And I could grab a bite, yeah! Though I'm from out of town, so you two are going to have to help me here. I'm not picky, so feel free to prioritize yourselves."

Noticing that the masked one actually gave her a name, she playfully gave Skyler a salute.

"Skyler it is!" She finger-gun pointed towards Skyler, before turning towards Chelsea with the same fingerguns and a wink. "And from what my ears heard, I'm gonna guess Chelsy stands for... Chelsea! Now let's go get that grub."

Harper said with a smile, already pushing any mention of Terrasphere away for the moment, as Chelsea had requested. She honestly thought Chelsea was being a bit too paranoid about all of this: It wasn't like Terrasphere was the only game a pair of adults could meet up and talk about, she had heard some people in her university talking about stuff like Last Phantasia XXI and Planet of Combatology.

But oh well... She figured the best way to know why she was acting like that was to know Chelsea better. And what better way to achieve that than to know what made the dark-haired girl's stomach rumble!

How did that saying go again... The way to a men's heart was through his stomach. Nobody said that also couldn't apply to girls as well!

Central Park: Hiding Place

Chelsea just stood there again.

Urgh, she agreed?

She said her name!

Why couldn't she say, no? No bye I have stupid tiger things to do? Something like that?

Chelsea didn't want to drag this person around. Especially with how loud they were. Not to mention... she didn't really have a place in mind. She was still a Nexon and the CEO of a soon to be defunct company. Yes two disasters in a row, and a borderline criminal (or maybe an actual criminal depending who you asked) to boot.

For a second Chelsea thought to ask Skyler for a mask and run away back to the manor at full speed but no. She had a Plan B.

"...this way. I know a place. Be quick."

The short girl moved quickly. Power walking and not even checking to make sure they were following. Going off the cobblestone path, she walked down a small trail pushing a bit of overgrowth away that led to a stream. There a bench and table sat.

A place she came to sometimes to hide from her aunt.

Now a place to hide from everyone.

Thankfully it wasn't used. It was pretty old. The small rabbit hole nearby had even begun to fill up. The critter must have moved on. Chelsea too, had to do this sooner or later. Tomorrow was knocking and she refused to answer.

"...here."

She slipped her bag off of her arm and opened it to reveal several containers.

One had shogayaki, the other was schweinebraten.
Next came a bottle of purified water and a can of soda.
Then utensils.
Finally with a moment of hesitation came a well crafted pork roast sandwich.

Why all this pork? She wasn't sure but she had a craving since this morning and needed to feed it.

"Don't litter in the park Skyler or forget to pull the mask down. You too."

Her gaze was unbending as she held the sandwich stiffly in Nicole s direction.

"This is a spare in case we were still hungry. You didn't think we were going to walk into a restaurant so that you can be stupid there too did you?"

Leaning over slightly she muttered to Skyler.

"Boo-ring? Boo. I've tried to stop that quirk Yeesh."

The last thing she wanted now was to have her reputation as a Nexon replaced with some bad anime vocal quirk!

She made herself as comfortable as she could be on the old bench and popped the lid. For a moment she thought the bits of pork would jump out and bite her while saying "Hog!" repeatedly like Pokemon. What a strange thought.

Chelsea really was stressing too much for someone who wore so little on her sleeve.

"Video games aren't the problem. Particular ones are."

"A lot of people consider playing games for a living a dream. Could end up worse kid."

They know just as much as she did that this isn't just a game. Games are supposed to have no risk to the self. That's why people play them... isn't it? For the fun of being something they aren't with no consequences? ...Chelsea never wanted anything like that. Privilege? Perhaps.

That feeling hasn't changed even with her world falling apart however.

Humanity is mad. It's a mad world and I'm stuck in it.
The best I can do... is keep myself alive. It's up to everyone else if they want to be stupid.

"..."

She took a bite of pork. It was good.
Forced self sufficiency wasn't the worst thing.

ALIENS!

The answer was, of course, aliens. The sentence Nicole didn't get to finish was a question the blonde had heard many times. That, and what shape the Earth had. Really strange that, but a topic for another time.

Instead, Nicole behaved... cool? No! More like a 40-year-old grandma trying to be hip with the kids. Yeah, Nicole was an odd person. "Yeah let's go!...?" At least in agreement with the food, it was N who then took charge. "Hey, hey! Slow down a little. How can such tiny legs move so fast!?"

....

Skyler had expected some fast-food chain or barely visited side-street restaurant. Instead, the trio found themselves surrounded by nature. "Woah..." With ambient noises akin to what she sometimes listened to fall asleep to. "That's a really, uh, green place!" Did they even have reception here? And what would they even eat?!

It was then that @Lady N started to throw around pork. Almost as if she butchered some hog just this morning. "Oh..." A noise mixed with emotions. Curious about what her boss brought along, disappointed by the lack of fried food and melted cheese. Though, she wasn't the kind of person to judge prematurely. After all, Skyler was very wise! "A-A-As if I'd EVER forget to pull down the mask! Maybe never happened before! Hmph."

Nom

"...WOAH!" Sitting right next to Chelsy, Skyler nearly jumped as if a ghost had just poked her. "Thish ish... grea'!" she mumbled with her mouth full. "Way beder'n wha' I make!" She swallowed. Of course, it wasn't quite melted cheese levels but. "Where did you order this from?"

Trying to probe the raven-haired girl about the origins of the foodstuffs, her eyes now wandered to Nicole. The two knew each other... because of a game? Skyler, too, liked games, yet Chelsea had never talked to her about that before. If she wanted to get closer to the Nexon girl this was a perfect chance!

"So, what game are you two playing together?" She asked @Harper.

Nicole clapped her hands once Chelsea invited the both of them to follow her, not having as much problem following the stern girl as her masked comrade was. Chelsea was still quite firm and cold towards Nicole, even after the girl's best efforts to seem approachable, but hey!

She didn't ask her to sod off, or to leave! This had certainly gone better than some past experiences already! And though she had to admit the both of them were quite a far few steps away from being best friends or anything... A step had been taken towards that.

--

As she walked down the trail off the beaten path, it quickly became obvious that they weren't going to a restaurant or cafe or even a hot dog stand. Unless said stand was operated by a squirrel. And when they eventually stopped by a stream with a bench, the white-haired girl almost blurted out a question on whether Chelsea had brought them to her personal fishing spot.

Thankfully, she didn't surrender to the first thing that came to her mind. This time.

"*Whistles*" She took a look at the scenery surrounding them, before resting a hand on her own hip with a pleased smile. "I'll be damned. A place of actual peace and quiet in the heart of the Big Apple? Next you'll tell me that further down the path is where you keep your secret stash of gold." She took a finger to her own hair, twirling it absent-mindedly as she continued her train of thought. "I have to say though... It is very "you" to know a place like this, Chelsea. In a good way, I mean."

Nicole's mind went back to The Calculator for a moment. Upon first meeting N, her impression of her was very confusing, her behavior during the whole thing especially so. But she definitely got the impression that the magia hated unnecessary commotion and reckless antics, so it did not surprise her one bit that Chelsea found herself in her element in a place like this.

--

As she sat down, she mouthed a silent "Whoa..." as the girl started to pull so many food containers. How organized! Nicole could appreciate the effort that was put into such a diverse spread, even if she was a firm believer in leaving as little things needing washing or carrying around to dispose of. And then she was offered the spare sandwich... Along with another friendly comment from Chelsea.

Truthfully, a part of Nicole was getting a bit annoyed at these, but it wasn't like she expected anything much different from what little she knew of N. And given the brash way this all started, maybe some of it was deserved.

Still, it wasn't like mouthing off any of that frustration would do any good. So with a small smirk and a snort, she shrugged with her shoulders before taking the sandwich from N's hand.

"And thus at the expense of herself and her food, the ever so selfless Chelsea protects the public at large from this stupid's stupidity!" Harper would exclaim, before closing her eyes and lifting the arm holding the sandwich up high. "Thanks for the food... *NOM*" With a big bite, she chews down for a few moments before gulping down her food and wiping her own mouth with her hand.
"A heavy price to pay... Because this sandwich is very good! Good thing I'm competing a weight class higher than usual, so I can devour this without guilt, *NOM!*"

--

As she finished another bite, both Anne's inquiry and Chelsea's quip about video games reached her. By this point, even Nicole knew how badly Chelsea wanted to avoid talking about Terrasphere directly. Yet she couldn't just dodge Anne's question either, and lying might just make things more awkward.

So she would do her best to tell the truth... Just not the whole truth.

"Haha! Gods, you'll make Chelsea pull a facial muscle if you recklessly assume things like that Skyler! It ain't quite that like that, no."

She let her one of her arms fall behind the bench as she relaxed, before continuing.

"It'd be a huge stretch to say we are playing together. We were just part of a group task in a VRMMO. Heck, she didn't even give me her name, I actually had to learn that second hand!"

She waved her other wrist in a circle a few times as she followed through with the tale.

"Job gets done, bad thing is kill, we go our separate ways, and that should be that... Except come today and I crash across someone who is a almost one-to-one match to thet comrade from that day."

The elbow from the arm behind the bench flexes upwards so that Nicole can scratch her hair with a sheepish smile.

"Once again, sorry for that. But well, we are now here, eating some good pork and enjoying some fresh air. All's well that ends well and what not, am I right... *Nom*"

Central Park: Hiding Place

"That's a really, uh, green place!"

"I like green. It's a sign of life. Not grey like a lot of stuff around."

The daughter of a legend like Matthias Nexon, to dislike the urban high tech world people like him brought forth? Even when she herself used to find joy in designing blueprints for fun? The toys that her father promised could be real? Sometimes it felt like that was so long ago it never even happened.

Look what robotics actually did for her... boo, that wasn't real anyway... right?

Death is pretty real. Very real.

Thankfully even if her thoughts were the usual doom and gloom, her actual feelings about it were quite dull. Perhaps Chelsea finally burnt out on her own depression.

"And thus at the expense of herself and her food, the ever so selfless Chelsea protects the public at large from this stupid's stupidity!"

"Stop saying stupid. Stupid."

It was odd to hear someone else say that around her. It's obvious that is shouldn't be overused like that. Chelsea glared as the messy woman made a mess of herself.

"Napkins exist."

And with that a wet cloth and dry cloth separately wrapped were thrust at Nicole. Skyler then distracted any further etiquette policing.

Skyler's comments almost made her smile. Until....

"Where did you order this from?"

"I made it. I prefer to do as many chores as I can myself.. I can't have too many employees get too close to me. I might as well take advantage of skills forced on me."

Urgh, she shouldn't have said that. That's the kind of thing that begs for questions from annoying stupids!

The Nexon continued to eat in a near machine like rhythm. It tasted good, especially with the strange pork cravings she had recently.

"So, what game are you two playing together?"

A funny sound came from Chelsea's throat as she swallowed her food hard to drown it out.

"It'd be a huge stretch to say we are playing together. We were just part of a group task in a VRMMO. Heck, she didn't even give me her name, I actually had to learn that second hand!"

"...sigh."

The Stupid Tiger actually had a limit it seemed. Although... how much longer did it all even matter?

"Yeah. I have to play games sometimes. I run VRS. I have to understand gaming."

Chelsea was able to lie without even a hint of doubt. Still, she glanced at Skyler almost in expectation. One reason she brought Nicole here was too avoid others eavesdropping on them. Now though, it seemed the entire aspect of IT could be avoided.

Good.

Otherwise what would happen? The usual "Don't play that game, It will kill you?" , "Why do you want to die so badly?", "What's wrong with playing something else?" and so on.

The noirette was past that now. She just didn't care to waste her breath anymore. That wasn't her chief concern for the future anyways.

"Once again, sorry for that. But well, we are now here, eating some good pork and enjoying some fresh air. All's well that ends well and what not, am I right... *Nom*"

"Mhm."

And so she ate.

For now, the future can stay there in a undesirable tomorrow.
