The Labyrinth

Two groups, pushing forward into the unknown. As each took their chosen path, questions seemed to hover over the air; would they make it out? Was there an escape? Did they choose the right path? What dangers lay ahead?

Steeled, ready for anything, the adventurers cast aside these worries, their risks chosen as they realised the bigger danger that lie with waiting where they were. Eternal entrapment, stuck in a single place, until they simply faded away.

Whether they would find their exit, or perish within the dark depths of the underworld was yet to be seen - but, as to be expected, a path forward was being forged. Now, it was simply a matter of...seeing.

Cycle 3; Meetings, Among the Dark

Aglow

As @Fiora Di Angelo and @Ronja Bubblyfoot took the lead forwards, into the water and beginning their pathway towards the curve ahead, they realised just how cold the water was. Flesh froze almost instantly, suffering from what felt like extreme frostbite even through the cloth that covered them. The burning sensation tearing through their bodies, the two clenched their teeth, trying desperately to fight against the feeling.

Unable to warn the others, soon the entire party was in the water, their movements slow and stumbling as they fought against the feel of the water around them - the burning sensation rushing through even the thickest of boots, over time.

As the safety of the boat was called out, the light spanning over the water, something could be seen moving beneath the surface. Peering, as if looking at something in the distance, the group saw what appeared to be a multi-coloured fish, reminiscent of a Japanese fancy koi, or perhaps a Siamese fighting fish off breed. The creature, moving slowly beneath the water, seemed to glow a combination of blues and purples, drawing eyes towards it as it moved closer and closer to the party.

Softly, gently, it seemed to slide against each of them, as if nuzzling the new things that had entered its home. Drawn towards them, the fish flowed smoothly around each of them, circling the individual before moving on to the next, repeating the pattern as it came to the next member.

It was during this motion, that @Ronja Bubblyfoot and @Rael noticed something off; a flash of darkest black against the otherwise blue water and scales of the fish, seconds before it lashed out towards @Valmont, tearing a piece off the man.

Glacial Creature. This fish is accustomed to the glacial water that it finds its home in. Players must make a Fitness check against a DC 55 at the beginning of their turn. On a failure, your attack automatically misses as the cold overwhelms you.

The Forest, Below

The climb down was harrowing, testing the two as they made their descent. While each had their experiences across the worlds, nothing ever fully prepares you for what you may find; including the sudden drop within an underground tunnel. Nor the forest that can be found even further below, the moonlight shining down from above as if enlightening the path before them.

As the pathways seemed to fade before them, the two spend their time searching, trying to determine the direction to take. While nothing seems to guide them, the two come to a decision that there is nothing better than the centre; a tried and true method.

A quick note to the other group, before they begin their trek through the woodlands, hoping that they have chosen correctly. The silence that comes after the overwhelming winds seems almost too peaceful, unnerving in a way. But that silence is slowly replaced as the sounds of the forest reach their ears; the call of birds, the chirp of numerous insects - and then, the soft howl of something larger.

As the two come to a sudden stop, they see a creature before them, covered in moss and staring at them intently. Barely visible against the backdrop of the natural environment that it so easily seemed to blend with. The breath of silence that passes is broken as a voice flows towards them, spoken aloud, but seemingly drifting upon the winds themselves.

Why have you come here, Oh Ones From Above? This is not your land, and you are not welcome here.

An attempt to communicate with the voice can be made by players. Complete a Presence or Knowledge check in order to see how the voice responds to your words.

Alternatively, should a player have access to Beast Arts, they may make a mastery check to see if they can communicate with the creature before them.

Cycle 2 Notes

  • @Valmont consumes an extra 3 EN for creating the boat. The boat is large enough to house the entire party from the water, but something will be required to push to forwards.
  • @Valmont takes -5 HP as the fish bites you.
  • Reminder to players; Mastery and/or Skill checks consume five (5) EN each check. Anything above and beyond may consume more, which will be adjusted retroactively on the next Cycle Update.

Cycle 3 Rules

  • No minimum/max word limits for posting. Muse is fickle, and we all know it comes and goes.
  • You may post numerous times during this cycle, however standard TerraSphere rules apply (no double posting).
  • Play Sheets are not required at this time, however you can prepare one which can be adjusted later in the challenge if required/desired. A cycle note will be placed if a set sheet is required.
  • Cycle updates will occur no later than forty-eight (48) hours from initial cycle posts. If you're unable to make that time frame, shoot @Shadow Wolf a message on Discord. I'm understanding, and it won't be a huge deal once in a while!
  • A Communications Thread is available for any lengthy communication that players feel is required beyond their post. Feel free to use this for general chatting, planning, or other topics as you desire!
  • Homebrew Content: At this time only Homebrew Content from Shadow Wolf's Lair will be included for playtesting reasons.
  • @Ronja Bubblyfoot, @Valmont, @Fiora Di Angelo, @Rael, @Zelrius, and @Aalam Abungu...welcome to the Labyrinth!

As this system uses the Homebrew content, the Energy Measurement System is in place.

This can be monitored in any way the player desires (a commentary at the bottom/top of the post, fancy BBCode bars, etc.).

Each player starts with a base 100 EN, and gains +10 per Armour rank. I've taken the liberty to outline the EN for each player below, to give an example and hopefully make this easier on everyone, based on their ranks at time of sign-up! If there are changes to your armour rating, please feel free to update accordingly!

Ronja Bubblyfoot: 150 EN (A Rank Armour)
Valmont: 120 EN (D Rank Armour)
Fiora Di Angelo: 140 EN (B Rank Armour)
Rael: 130 EN (C Rank Armour)
Zelrius: 140 EN (B Rank Armour)
Aalam Abungu: 140 EN (B Rank Armour)

Example energy bar as requested by Harmonia, and kindly provided by Dez! Please note that the colour of the meter bar itself (where it says yellow, beside metercolor), can only be changed to certain colours at this time. Hex codes do not work, unless this has been updated.

Ronja tilted her head at @Fiora Di Angelo's rejection of the hand hold but nodded at the reasoning. "In this case... But Ronja still thinks we need to be careful about the water!" She warned, looking at Fiora who was already stepping into it without hesitation. "Fiora!" Ronja hissed, shaking her head and side glancing at @Valmont, who quickly prepared an arcane boat, albeit it lacked some form of move.

"That's cool! Let's see if Ronja can help on it with her Aidlings." She cheered, waving at the Aidlings for them to come back, and gesturing for them to hover down behind the boat, so they would use their propels to move the boat instead of simply flying.

"Ronja doesn't approve of dividing the group, but..." Ronja squinted, sighing to @Rael. She didn't want to go somewhere that according to that voice, would probably mean trouble. Granted, it seemed like they were about to find trouble really soon...

Her attention averted to the shimmer by the lake, but before she could warn about it, a brimming fish suddenly appeared, ready to take a bite off the fellow Magia. "Valmont!" She called, trying to pull him away from the creature and looking at it with a worried glint in her eyes, activating her Investigation Mode as she tried to calm it down.

After making the boat Valmont took a moment to breathe. Relaxing as he let the effort of deep concentration fade. He still wasn’t used to the pressures put on him by the system, or had learned to let it carry its share of the load yet. But he made due. He was pretty proud of how it came out, having recently started to study 3D printing models for ideas on how to efficiently use his limited supply of power.

As Rael surged forward, grabbing his vest and sleeve for support he almost lost his balance from the unexpected weight, though compensating for the small woman was easy enough. Really, the whole series of events reminded him of a trip into The Rockies from a lifetime ago, a weekend canoe trip with some friends. Even the chill, felt through the pain dampeners, had that familiar ice-melt sting to it. Despite the implicit threat in their environment it seemed like Valmont was having a reasonably good time.

Right up until something bit him. A glowing fish that had been circling. A glowing fish he hadn’t given the proper caution, forgetting himself in the moment. A glowing fish that immediately became a target as a flash of blue energy spiked off of his leg to strike back at the enemy, leaving a wave of energy to crawl over him in a hexagonal pattern. A magical shield.

The illusion of memory shattered, reality came crashing back with enough force to give him whiplash. Ronja reached out to protect him, and he used his body like a more mundane shield to protect Rael, shifting her into the Magia’s reach instead. ”Everybody on the boat. Now. He didn’t shout, but there was force there. His voice echoing wildly off of the cavern walls and water’s surface.

His eyes flashed to life, activating the investigative mode he’d let lapse in his foolishness. With a spray of water he drew his pistol, and five of the octahedron from the port side of the ship shot off into the air. Blue beams of energy filled the cavern, lighting the interior as he fired off again and again into the water. Overkill at its finest.

When it was all said and done Valmont stood beside the boat, breathing hard, eyes wild as he searched the water for more threats. The remains of the fish surfaced, chunks of the burnt body floating listlessly. But all the same, he kept his pistol trained on the swimming threat. ”Can’t even trust the fish in this place. Why must they soil something so beautiful?” He mumbled, though his voice carried in the cavern.

Turning his attention to Fiora he huffed. ”Shark season, eh? More right than you thought. Come on, lets move before its friends start to show up.” He nodded towards the boat, moving to give Rael a hand out of the water before boarding himself.

The creature didn't frighten her. It was more the reminder of a sea creature, a friendly one at that, which had decided that Rael should accompany it on its underwater adventures which frightened her the most. Were it any other circumstances, especially those which did not involve a large body of water, she might've reacted with untold excitement at the fish's fascinating visage. Now, she could but stare at it with a suspicion born from experience, which would once again more her to be right.

As Valmont shifted himself so that the elf was shielded from the same damage he had been afflicted by, her hands sought the nearest surface they could find, falling onto the familiar form of their magia, Ronja, and grasping at her tightly. She urged the woman near the boat which the two of them were to thank for, and hurried to get herself onto it.

Ever heard of the phrase 'rocking the boat'?

One might use it to address a person's behavior when either their words or actions cause others to become upset, leading to problems and even increasing their severity.

It more accurately described how Rael quite literally did it, arms outstretched to either side of her, spanning almost the entire width of the vessel she had hurried onto, clumsy in her eagerness to abandon the source of her fears. She fell onto her back, and with a burst of iridescent light, she let magic surge from her fingertips, beating back the frostbite as magic coalesced with purpose and gave birth to a multitude of translucent forms affixed to each of her companion's weapons of choice, all in the form of thin, needle-like implements made to dissuade any attackers from going after the group yet again.

Someone had to riddle it for her: Why did she jump into the water in the first place?

Oh yeah, she had ignored Ronja all together. As worried as the Magia seemed, her words fell to the void once she made an olympic leap into the waters, then realized just how bad of an idea it was. Ice cold is nearly an understatement, it almost froze her blood as much as it did to her limbs that struggled to push her through the body of water. By the time she had come and gone, the screams had well gone past elven ears, and after pushing out of the waters, Fiora just stared at the group on top of the boat with a puzzled, tormented face all alike.

"M-M-m-more like f-freezin' m-my ass of-off season..." She replied, making haste back on top of the boat and almost dropping the whole group with her as carefulness went over the board. Good thing weight is well balanced on this little yet humble ship!

"Friends? W-what did I miss, I was peeking under the waters but couldn't see much. Not doi-doing it again, ever..." Fiora wrapped her arms around herself just then in hopes to keep the warmth from bleeding out. "Anyone got pyromancy that ain't Zel? I could use a living lighter right now." Should have gone with the redhead for once...

It seemed that they were able to make it into a new area well, it paid to go exploring, and he was going to get the most out of where they were, pulling his bow off his back and letting it rest on his side ad they made their way into the room. This had been something unexpected; he had been expected to see something more like the rest of the labyrinth, but this forest that was under the rock well was something new in his years of exploration Whatever this place was, it was living, and it was vibrant, and that was something different that he had trouble processing, running his fingers through the water as they made their way deeper into the forest, from what he was able to tell that water was fresh. Fresh water that deep into a cave system and plants that were growing without direct contact with light...it has to be magic of some kind that allowed this to happen—that or some divine right, at least.

He turned his eyes on the beast before he closed his eyes and listened to what the creature was saying. He wasn't trained in the beast art, but he was able to make himself known to any creature. Folding his legs under himself and sitting on the ground, he looked up at the creature, staring into those eyes before he undid his cloak, letting it fall to the ground before placing his hands in his lap. The spectral arm formed from the little bit of spiritual magic he had as he pressed his words into the environment around him, the same moss that covered

"There has been a change, and we have come to see if that change will be a danger and if it will be to stop it from those it would hurt. To protect those who come after us, I ask for your help in this One from blew."

Had Zelrius seen double? Or misinterpreted? He wiped, rubbed his eyes when he kept seeing the shadow moving beside him, at first thinking it an eye trick - then perhaps he had merely pushed ahead too quickly. His head turned to see its source. @Aalam Abungu standing there next to him at the bottom of the terrible climb. He hadn't turned around. There was a smile that overtook the redhead's face, one that he tried to hide by turning away. It was elating, to know that he wasn't around, and joined by this man as they made their way into the overgrowth.

Met now with a verdant expanse of shrubbery and greenry. As Dense as the Tangleweaves, but with a more musted, dense air contained by the caverns. More welcoming? That much was hard to tell. People came into this Labyrinth, and never went back out. To rule out this area as one of the causes would be insane. Aalam moved first, the Pyromancer trailed closely behind, listening to the moving water, and the stillness of the mass of plant life before them.

He nearly bumped into the other adventurer when the first came to a sudden stop, causing Zelrius to do the same, and turn around quickly at the sound of the voice in the forest. He couldn't make out any of the finer details on the creature. It looked like more green and dark colors blending and swirling in on the forest. But, its silhouette was in perfect clarity. Almost like roots spreading around it, invading the forest, making it one with the very landscape. Was this... the forest itself? Some kind of creature that spread itself out in this way to entrap visitors? Why would it warn them then?

Zelrius had a bad feeling, but let Aalam speak his piece of it here, not to interrupt or perhaps change the effect his words had. Only letting the air around him warm up in cautious preparation, and as a small warning that he was prepared for a fight, should this being choose that.

The Labyrinth

The river, as it may be, had found the group...refreshing. While the adventurers had considered the simplicity of their path - what better adventure than to create a boat, beneath the ground, and sail onwards? - they had come to the stark realisation as one of their kin was nipped; this world had fangs, even beneath the surface, in such a beautiful appearance.

While the Magia @Valmont obliterated the dangerous beauty in a display of zealous murder, the remainder of the group surged onto the small craft that the aforementioned had created. While the final pieces of the fish seemed to float to the surface, a red colouring building in the water around the Magia and the craft, a soft squealing could be heard from the darkness behind the group - echoing from the direction they had originally determined to avoid...

Meanwhile, the ranger and pyromantic find themselves staring face to face with a wolfen creature, the presence of which seems to concern one of the two. While the ranger seemed determined to discuss solutions, or perhaps a way of escape, the pyromantic focus on...?

Cycle 4; Of Voices and Despair

Aglow

As the group makes their way into the craft, a savage cry is heard echoing from the darkness behind the group, seemingly erupting from the pathway they had originally ignored - perhaps for the best? As breaths pass, and the echoing seems to continue, the group suddenly hears something hissing beneath the sound, an almost...voice-like whisper, that seems filled with fury.

Blood...I smell...blood...in mine waters...fooood...has it comes...into our waters...where does it lie, yummy dummy chummy...

Players may choose to make an Awareness OR Knowledge check in order to determine either where the voice is coming from OR what the voice could possibly be.

Alternatively, players may make a Knowledge OR Fitness check in order to attempt to get the craft moving in the direction it was originally pointed - or attempt to change direction towards the voice.

The Forest, Below

As @Aalam Abungu seats himself before the wolfen creature and begins trying to explain their purpose here, @Zelrius finds himself drawn to the tendrils of aura that seem to emanate from the creature. While there are no signs of immediate danger, the creature refrains from moving - standing above the two as if a king above its people.

You are not welcome here, Oh Ones from Above. Leave this forest behind, lest you awaken that which dwells within...

As @Zelrius turned his attention inwards, the fire deep within himself called to kindle, the wolfen creature seemed to turn its attention towards the redhaired individual.

The forest remembers the pain of the burn of fires long put out...it welcomes not the deadly bite of such flames...beware the grasping roots.

A single step, silent on the air, and suddenly the creature is gone, leaving the two alone in the forest again. As @Zelrius glances around, he finds more of the green tendrils, seemingly drawing him in towards the centre of the forest itself, as if beckoning.

Players may choose to follow the pathway that leads to the centre of the forest, or forge their own path. If forging their own path, complete a Fitness check.

@Zelrius may choose to make an Awareness OR Knowledge check to investigate the tendrils that remain behind, which only he can see.

Cycle 3 Notes

Despite her attempt to try to seek a peaceful solution, @Valmont had just gone through, exploding the creature with his weapon in a manner that made Ronja flinch and nearly shoot a glare if it wasn't for Rael suddenly holding onto her tightly. "Hey, hey, it is fine. There isn't anything attacking anymore." She said with a gentle rub on @Rael's shoulder, trying to soothe her before frowning at the other Magia.

"That was unnecessary! Ronja was trying to calm it down!" She warned, widening her eyes open when a voice caught her attention, making her squint while looking behind her back and letting out a sigh, shifting her gaze to @Fiora Di Angelo and approaching her, unzipping her suit to taking it off, staying with her black tank top despite the chilling ambient to try and cover the elf, though it looked like a towel on the much larger body she had.

"Ronja can offer that, but for heat, she would need to build something... Let's try to be more careful, and less hasty next time, alright?" She said, glancing at the others and then forward, pausing to pay attention at the voice that warned some sort of... Ominous statement.

She wondered what it was--

The rapid beat of her heart steadied under Ronja's calming presence, though the source of her fear had been mistaken to be that creature which had attacked Valmont mere moments ago, the surrounding waters stained with its blood.

She remained in her seated position upon the vessel, making herself small now that there was no other option than to allow for water to breach the distance between solid ground and the unknown exit they so desperately hoped for. It wasn't as dreadful an affair, however, as the three who had followed her along made for much better company than she would've originally guessed.

A smile crossed her lips.

And it vanished with the echoing voice that came from the depths, although she could not be sure as they kept moving forward, the cavern seeming to reverberate the noise as it bounced off of its every wall. "[ Do you hear that? It doesn't sound friendly anymore. ]"

Had it called them food..? Rael closed her eyes and tuned in on the sound, trying to discern where it had come from.

He watched the creature move away from them and into the forest around them before it nodded to himself. It seemed that this was going to be one of those days, and during those days, man was made to work harder than before. Reaching down and grabbing his cloak before he pulled it back up over his shoulder so this was going to be the path moving forward? Well, that was something that he would be able to deal with, and if he was going to be trusting @Zelrius to have his back, then he wasn't going to have to worry about much. Grabbing his bow and slinging it back over his shoulder as he turned to the left to start making his way through the brush. It was going to be slow going as they made their path through, but with any luck, they would be able to get around a trap that was made for them—letting the smoke drift from his mouth as he moved.

"Hopefully, we don't run into much, but at least now we know that whatever is down here doesn't want us to be down here."

Once everyone else was secured on the boat Valmont made the leap to join them. With a surge of water he pulled himself out of the stream and onto the back of the vessel. He sat down on the backmost bench, shivering from the cold and adrenaline even through the dampeners as Ronja reprimanded him. ”I may have overreacted.” He grumbled. ”But I wasn’t taking any chances in this weird death-trap of a place.”

With quick, if numb, hands he ran his fingers through the sequence to unequip his shirt, briefly exposing his bare torso as he navigated the menu. While most Magia displayed their machine nature on their heads, his telltale sign was his body. Though lifelike his muscles had a synthetic look to them, faint lines making up the edges along which they joined. It gave him an almost doll-like quality. At least in the brief window before a dry shirt, a cobalt blue tunic appeared for him to slip into. ”I learned from our little forest foray, always pack for the wet.” He smiled at Rael before producing a pair of camping blankets and passing them out to the others. ”Sorry, only got the two to keep warm with.”

Then the voice came, echoing from the depths of the darkness beyond their position. Calling for blood. His head snapped up and looked around, investigative eyes leaving golden trails in the dim light like sparklers. ”Shark Season… Are you some kind of prophet, Fiora?” He asked, light concern in his voice. ”Wherever that is, let’s try not to be here when it comes to eat, yeah?” With a motion the three octahedron that had been framing his shoulders moved down to join Ronja’s aidlings, pressing up against the back of the boat and trying to get it moving upstream, even if his attention was being pulled in multiple directions, he hoped it was enough to save them.

Her eyes quickly darted back to Ronja once the magia dropped her suit on her to wrap about. It helped, not much but enough to stop her from freezing out here for the moment, yet it came with it's own kind of weight, moreso for the mind than the body, as the mention of hastyness was brought up. A frown crossed her features, and rather than to retort like instinct told her to, the elf remained nodded. "My bad. Won't happen again." She replied.

"We had a problem, you made a decision and did it quick. That's better than what most can say while under attack." Fiora added once @Valmont explained his reasoning, which wasn't that far off from her own. These kind of beasts usually are better off dead than alive. Things are less troublesome when dead and have less of a chance to bite back. A smile came up once the white-haired 'savage' poured out a few blankets for her and Rael, waving it off quick enough. "Leave it there, someone has to row." She stated, and put her hands to use to get their little ship back on course, cold breathe exhaling with each pull, maximizing her performance with mere synchrony. Gotta know when to breathe in and out - The basics of sports and any physical activity.

"Shark Season… Are you some kind of prophet, Fiora?"

"When I was a kid I went to the beach. Hot as fuck, got tired of playing with sand, so I asked mom and dad if I could go and take a splash. There were a lot of waves and all but mom was there with me."
She paused, checking back behind her, just to make sure they were still on the right path. "Ran over there like any excited kid would, jumped into the water, straight onto a jellyfish." Her face said it all: Easier times, painful ones too but easier all in all, a nostalgic memory for her to recall.

"Those little spongey shits sting like a wasp, I felt that pain on my chest for a whole day or two. Just remember I cried a lot and had this cool red streaks all over, looked like some kind'a tattoo to me back then. Ever since, I'm wary of any body of water. There's always something ready to sting your ass, moreso in this game."

Blood...I smell...blood...in mine waters...fooood...has it comes...into our waters...where does it lie, yummy dummy chummy...

Deadpan face turned back to Valmont. Easy to tell how fucking unsurprised she is, specially after her little tale. "Story of my life, fighting against the goddamn ocean."

The Labyrinth

Voices in the dark ever present worries to those whom travel beneath. But is it what they can hear and see, or what hides within the shadows, that is the true fear? As the voice echoes off the walls, seemingly coming and going, words of a threatening nature that speak towards consuming intentions...are they sure they're headed in the right direction?

Although the water seems to drift onwards and downwards, the group must find a way to enter this stream. And while it may seem easy, the crafting across water has ever been but simple. What would one do, should they encounter rock or reef, or worse...something living, beneath the surface? Waiting, watching, preparing...perhaps its not what comes, that should worry, but what waits and baits...

But one must ask themself, is the forest beneath any safer? The treetops, foliage, hidden depths of the woods? Could they call this home to many, solitude and security? What of those dangers that lurk beneath the brush, or inside the husk of a trunk, just waiting to pounce? Trivial, trivia and ever present dangers - that is what an adventurer faces, and as these two groups push ever further forwards...

Cycle 5; The River

Echo Emblazed

Blood...I smell...blood...in mine waters...fooood...has it comes...into our waters...where does it lie, yummy dummy chummy...

The voice seems to echo all around the walls, and as @Ronja Bubblyfoot and @Rael focus on the words themselves - leaving others to do the hard labour of preparing their escape - they discern something about the voice itself. It is far, far too close. In fact...

As @Valmont and @Fiora Di Angelo manage to force the craft into the waters, under the careful guidance of the knowledgeable Magia and the pure strength of the Elfen woman, they come to a sudden realisation...the water around them carries a shadow that wasn't there mere seconds before.

Rushing to get free of the water, and back into the safety of the boat, the group watches as the snake like creature seems to slither underneath the boat, easily several metres in length, although slim in girth. The thing seems content, for the moment, to remain beneath and beside the boat, watching as it travels down the river, as if hoping for a chase.

Why does it rush...the yummy dummy chummy...there's still time to play...it's been so, so lonely...I'm glad you're here...

The voice seems to come from beneath and above all at once, echoing off the cave walls in a way that would hurt those with more sensitive hearing. Twisting, as if an animal playing in water, the thing spins itself around and around, seemingly joyful for the experience, content to give chase for now.

Players can choose to make a Fitness check in order to attempt to speed up the current slow crawl of the vessel itself. Alternatively, players can make an appropriate Mastery Check in order to attempt to speed up the vessel. Note: Appropriate simply means that it can logically make sense. You're not going to speed the boat up by turning back time, so to speak!

Players may make an Awareness, Knowledge OR Beast Arts check in order to determine what exactly the creature is, and possibly what it's intents are.

Players may make a Presence check in order to attempt to persuade, intimidate, or otherwise engage with the creature. Perhaps it'll listen to your words, over it's own?

Where the River Leads...

As @Aalam Abungu and @Zelrius continue through the forest, they find themselves entering a small glaive. At first, the emptiness leads them to believe the area peaceful. But as they step into the glaive, they find it anything but empty.

Springing from beneath the grass, large catlike creatures spring for the safety of the trees, moving similar to rabbits in their hopping, meandering style of movement. On the far side of the glaive, a large creature with the fur of an elk, the neck of a giraffe, and the teeth of something far more sinister seems to unfurl itself, before deciding it need be somewhere else.

But as they move to continue forward, a familiar voice speaks out from the shadows of its hiding place, seemingly taunting the two once more.

You are not welcome here, Oh Ones from Above. Leave this forest behind, lest you awaken that which dwells within...turn not to the path of freshness, but instead to that which flows freely...

Whatever words of wisdom it may be giving, the two can't seem to locate any paths in the immediate area. Perhaps it plays with the minds of those lost, or perhaps it instead wishes to entangle those who manage to find their ways upon its territory...either way, the two are certain it's ill news best left behind...

Their movement forward doesn't last long, as the two cross the glaive and find themselves standing before a river; large enough that it flows into the distance and beyond, seemingly coming from a waterfall in the wall high above. To their left, they can see where the water slams into the pool at its bottom, flowing outwards and past them, towards...is that a light, leading outwards?

Players may choose to make a Awareness OR Knowledge check to determine the depths of the river itself, and the possibility of crossing/entering the water. Alternatively, players can make an appropriate Mastery Check in order to attempt to speed up the vessel. Note: Appropriate simply means that it can logically make sense. You're not going to figure out much about the river if you try and drop your blood into it, so to speak!

A shadow had been cast underneath their faithful vessel, and a voice echoed from the not so depths of the icecold underground lake. She shared a glance with @Valmont with no inclination to say a word before gesturing beneath them. Whatever it was, it's huge, and the elf wasn't about to bother with it. Her arms would do the talking instead, flexing with each pull done to speed up her rowing and get them out ASAP, and yet that didn't make the dark looming beneath them to change not an inch, as if a shadow of the boat it were. How irksome.

"Ronja..." Gray hues turned back to @Ronja Bubblyfoot with furrowed brows and a face full of concern. "I'm fine, take your suit. Ready yourselves." The last bit had her glance back at Rael, her fellow elf and pinkette (if only the player was also pink haired irl, that is). "I don't know what y'all gonna do, but I would ask if we do it quickly, because this son of a bitch down here we ain't losing it anytime soon, and I already want to punch it on the face."

The rumbling voice sent chills down Ronja's spine, making her instinctively glance down the improvised boat, scowling. "That's no good-" She muttered, glancing at Fiora when she called her name, giving back her suit. "... Maybe it is for the better," Ronja said, hurriedly wearing her suit, skipping the zipping so she could already prepare protection for the group.

Clasping her hands together, Ronja's eyes began glowing, while her hair began hovering as the mana field was interfered with, a moment before Ronja's hand parted and she clasped her palm on each of her allies.

❰ Infusion - Mana Hex Shield ❱

A brief zap would be felt by them, followed by a layer of hex shield covering and protecting their whole body. Albeit frail, it would at least manage to handle one or two impacts from the aberration that was incoming.

With a heavy sigh, Ronja remained firm despite the sudden Energy output, glaring down the silhouette and trying to understand what exactly it was. "We should empower ourselves, just in case-" She said, glancing at Rael, that could have a few tricks under her sleeve as well.

Rael's face drained of color as the others readied themselves for the inevitable confrontation, her fears resurfacing to bite her backside as she could no longer complain about something that had been originally her idea. No, while watching Fiora try and coordinate the defenses of the boat and rolling up her sleeves, Rael put both her hands forward and tried to calm those present, instructing that she, too, wished to do something that perhaps would spare them the need for violence.

A creature from the depths, never allowed the blessing to know the world outside the bounds it had been confined to since its birth, would it feel moved by the creations of land dwellers, namely music and such? Though not a musician by trade, dabbling into the particular magic which gave her stories strength had allowed for some measure of knowledge to be passed onto her in return, gifting her with some melodic incantation to borrow power from now and then.

Though not eager enough in her attempts to lean over the side of the vessel and stare into the waters she dreaded so very much more than the snake itself, she took in a deep breath and let sounds from nature itself converge with purpose, each a different note to add to the song that she wove into sentences she would not speak by voice, a harmony made of familiarity that the snake itself would undoubtedly recognize as the very own sounds of its home, now strung together in a small song that grew longer, quieter, and louder with the meaning she wished to convey.

"[ We never meant to intrude... Forgive us. ]" The notes of the song took on a more somber, sullen tone to reflect this, allowing for a quiet to settle before next she poured meaning into them. "[ Though we are not food, I don't think. I reckon some of us would even taste bad. We are in a rush because we didn't know these waters were your home, we don't wish to overstay our welcome. Could you help us find a way out? ]"

With everyone reasonably safe, for the moment, Valmont took a second to just sit on the back of the boat and breathe. Slipping his glasses off he dried the lenses on his tunic, laughing lightly at Fiora’s story. ”Oh, so you’ve had practice. Good news then, this mere river should be much easier.”

When Ronja’s healing wave washed over him he looked down at his hand where she touched. He turned it this way and that, watching how her shield played against his own defenses, adjusting them slightly so the two built into a harmonious resonance. ”Thank you. You are so much better at that on your own.” He sighed. Reaching out he plucked one of his octahedron from its position on the back corner of the boat. Absently he opened one of the side panels, reaching in to adjust a piece of the internal mechanism. ”I can barely muster half as much potency out of these shoddy prototypes.”

Releasing it he sent it fluttering to its corner, listening to Rael try to talk to the underwater snake. ”Leave it to the beauty to soothe the beast, eh?” He chuckled. ”She has her specialty, we have ours. Let’s get this puppy moving until she convinces it to pull us along.” He waved two other octahedron over. Opening up they showered his extended hand with light, which then began to crystalize into some kind of device. A long shaft, an angled brace, the head a series of gears produced one by one. It was like watching a very fast printer make what was resolved into a simple propeller. He affixed it to the back of the boat, the frame fitting into a slot in the brace, just to the right of his seat. The two octahedron took up a position at the head, slotting into a space designed just for their open surfaces. They began to rotate, the force transmitted through gears and down the shaft. At first there was the grating sound of glass breaking before it faded. Small threads that had merged the entire mechanism together into the necessary “one piece” that saved so much time and energy. A sloppy workaround to cut a corner. The basic gearbox would fail eventually because of it, but hopefully not before it served its usefulness.

Valmont winced at the sound, which echoed off the water's surface and cavern walls. He checked to make sure the propeller was spinning before he lowered it into the water. It moved at a good clip, enough to give the boat a bit of a push but not enough to overthrow Fiora’s rowing. Enough to move the water, but not so fast as to create cavitations which would sound thunderous under the surface. He hoped it didn’t look like food.

"Hmmm," The groan pushed its way out of his mouth as he looked down at the river; water now was something dangerous and could easily do some terrible things, but if the flow was correct, then it had to empty into somewhere, and that could be the path the other team had gone to. Given that they weren't too sure what they were getting into, damming up the stream or increasing it would be dexterous, and that was something he wasn't going to risk. Reaching down and pulling out a rock before rolling it under his fingers, well, his vision might not have been enough to see into the depth of the water he would be able to get a feel from how many ripples moved over the so he focused. It came with time, and it came with a good deal of skill, but he had been able to work his sense into hyper so that he would be able to pick up most things with ease and push all of them into that one action. But a second before he focused, another idea came into his head. Reaching out, he pulled into the network of plants in the area; he wasn't too sure what was being hidden away, but he was damn sure going to find it, and there was no one to stop him from finding it. So far, he hasn't heard an SOS message from the other team, so they might or should be fine.

He pressed his fingers to the ground before pushing his mana into the vegetation growing around them to do two things; the first was to form a bridge made of vines and root systems that would hold their weight as they crossed the river. And if there was enough for a connection, he was reaching out to the algae in the river to see how deep it went—cracking his back as the walkway formed over the water, something to take them deeper into the forest.

The Labyrinth

Cycle 6; The Encounter

Desperate attempts to escape, to flee that which whispers in the dark beneath the depths. As the ever vigilant @Fiora Di Angelo and @Valmont turn their attention to moving forwards, the caring and soft @Rael turns her voice towards the thing that seems to slither beneath them. Soft words, spoken with reassurance and hope, seemingly touched with emotion and a desire to please.

Words...spoken in kindness...not food? Not intruders? Purpose...carried...perhaps you are not chummy...yummy...I will guide you away...this way...

As the boat continues to push forward, the snake beneath seems to bounce against it, giving the craft a small boost in speed. A moment of celebration as the group finds themselves moving faster, faster...then suddenly the noise - the crashing of distant waters...

As @Aalam Abungu and @Zelrius search for their way forward, it is not the crash of the waterfall, nor the screams that seem to echo that catch their attention. It is, in aspect, the sudden appearance of a flying dragon, hovering for mere moments in the air before diving downwards, entering the pool below without so much as a wave to announce itself.

Decisions made, they turn to leave - only to find their path halted once more by a similar mirage before them. Standing on the banks of the river, glaring at them, the moss covered wolf seems to growl. Upon its face, one would swear the expression turned dark, frustration and fury.

Warned to leave...and yet more you have brought. Welcome, they are not. Welcome, you are not. The forest shall devour that which is not kindred, not fair of heart, not opened upon. Here shall you join the dirt, to become one with that which surrounds!

As the air grows thick with distaste, @Aalam Abungu and @Zelrius are shocked to see a small craft come floating along the river, a collection of their companions thrown throughout it - some looking worse for wear...
