Personality
Among his peers Liem is calm and professional. He has worked hard to master the art of showing dignity and poise to those around him. Humble in victory, and thankful in defeat. These are the times he his at his most "him", his highest state of self. When the cameras are gone, and the doors are closed, when he is alone, he is different. Quiet. Calm. Reserved. Stoic. He rarely shows much emotion.
At the same time, he rarely does anything in private that requires emotion. Instead of watching TV, or movies, playing games, or reading fiction he instead opts to study. While others read Manga, he reads through lectures by dead professors, or biographies. While others watch TV, he watches documentaries. Many would confuse this drive with passion, they would be wrong.
Liem isn't passionate about learning. Liem is passionate about being someone big. Being known. Joining the ranks where few trod. Astronauts. Theoretical Physicists. Revolutionary software engineers. World-class surgeons. Inventors. Anything that would get his name known and passed down for generations. Anything to leave his mark on the world.
He will do anything to be a household name where they bring him up in conversation and everyone nods and smiles, and someone says, "Now that was a man to be respected."
Anything.
Positive: Confident, Level-headed, Brilliant
Negative: Arrogant, Resentful, Single-minded
Background
Liem was a bright young man with great prospects. Pulling up their roots his family moved to America in order to help him pursue a better education. He did well; Valedictorian in High School, hundreds of hours of community service, recently receiving his RCM 10 certification, fluent in three languages, and many other accolades. He collected them like most kids collected trading cards.
Unfortunately the life one lives to curate an impressive resume often does not align with an impressive social life. He is a man surrounded by colleagues, acquaintances, connections, but not many he would call friend. He is good at maintaining the air of professionalism necessary for social situations, but in his private life he is stoic, almost emotionless.
One evening on their way to a university meeting his family was struck by a drunk driver running a red light. Thirty seconds was all it took to change his world forever. Many of the safety features on the car failed to deploy. His father was dead on impact. His mother died of complications. The drunk driver of the other car got little more than a broken nose from hitting his airbag. Many would say Liem came out the worst of the four involved. Skull cracked. Paralyzed down his left half. Blind in his right eye. Burns over 10% of his body. If it weren't for the pervasive numbness he would be in constant pain. His recovery cost him important positions. His absence cost him contacts. His injuries cost him futures. Sympathy came in droves, but the world of the budding elite moved on. Places had to be filled, and there were always other prospective applicants lining up.
To top it all off, all of the tests and procedures necessary for his recovery revealed a death sentence. Pancreatic Cancer. Estimates said five years.
There were only two positives. First, lawsuits on the driver and General Motors meant he would never have to work, and his medical bills were covered. Second, a kind care-worker introduced him to the world of Deep Dive VR. It wasn't long before he was trawling the internet looking for the most cutting edge equipment and games. Looking to run away from his life. Escapism by a man who'd never had an outlet.
Here, amidst his rampant addiction, he found Terrasphere. Here, he would finally find compatriots. Here, he would forge his new life. Here, he would be beloved. Or feared. Either way they would put respect on his name.
