Scythe Mastery ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Spirit Magic ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Aeromancy ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Corrupt

Kyra looked at Ash in surprise as he backed away, fur on end in an obviously defensive, concerned manner. She naturally raised a hand towards the Orb, pushing it back behind her ever so slightly as she tried to figure out exactly what was going on.

It...it just kind of...appeared in my apartment one day, kind of out of nowhere...I never did figure out exactly where it came from...and I mean, it gives off a bit of a creepy vibe...but...I mean it hasn't ever really...done anything...

She glanced over at the orb, suddenly wondering. The thing had been quiet, never putting up a fuss at being locked away in a chest. She'd felt uneasy about the thing, but she'd never feared it. Never considered that it could be harmful in any way. It had just...been.

I came...from beyond...a gift from one you do not understand...I am here only to give advice, whether it be taken...or ignored. You fear much, for little reason...

Kyra's ears tweaked at the sudden words. She'd not expected the orb to say anything, much less defend itself. Still, somehow it felt wrong, as if she should immediately distrust the orb and put it back where it came from. Maybe it's just...misunderstood? I mean, it could be friendly...I've never really given it a chance.

She turned back to Ash, putting her question aloud in the hopes that maybe he would have an answer for her, some sort of guidance on the situation.

I mean, the voice is a little bit creepy but it's never really done anything...well, at all. Ever since I got it, it's just been in that chest, and it just kind of...accepted that? I don't think...I don't think that it means any harm - it would've done something before, right? It's just...creepy, kind of?

Ash kept his distance, eyes still on the floating orb. As if it might do something at any moment - burst, or scream, or attack.

But all it did was float and whisper. Not even the Kurungaar's swansong had whispered. Perhaps she was right: that it was harmless, and simply resembled that dreaded orb. Still...

"I would just be... wary about it, Kyra. Demons, as far as I know, are a corrupting force. The mere presence of a corpse was what led to the battle at Camp Ilusus, and I watched what happened when something ate that corpse."

Writhing arms, rolling eyes, gnashing teeth. Distorted flesh bursting from within, ready to rampage across the jungle, just before it was destroyed by a final, overwhelming blast. Ash shuddered at the memory. "It was unpleasant, to put it lightly."

Ash's runestone continued to slowly orbit around him, eyes glinting. Was he being a hypocrite, not disclosing the origin of his own piece of equipment? No, this was different - it didn't speak, and there was no hint of dissonance there.

"Just... you know. Be careful with it, okay? Especially if it starts offering forbidden knowledge."

Scythe Mastery ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Spirit Magic ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Aeromancy ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Corrupt

Kyra's left ear twitched in response to the warning, and it took all her effort to keep her face stoic as she spoke aloud in response. Her tail, behind her, gave a couple of twitches - signifying the effort she was putting into keeping herself calm and controlled.

Forbidden knowledge? I mean when it first appeared, it offered to teach me the ways of Dark Magic...and, well, I mean it taught me a few iterations that I could repeat that would allow me to...well, that's not important. I'll...I'll make sure to be safe.

She fought, hard, against the laugh that was building up in her chest. She couldn't help but take advantage of the situation, but she entirely lost control after the orb chipped in its own commentary.

Remember...oh Great and Powerful Kyra the Overseer...speak clearly, lest the Claws Below drag you downwards in exchange...

The voice from the orb was still wispy, still somewhat creepy. But Kyra couldn't miss the tone of humour behind the words, the way that they were meant to draw a laugh from her - something that it did successfully.

When she had calmed enough to speak again, she tried to appease Ash, tried to explain the situation and calm any fears he might be having.

Sorry...sorry! I shouldn't joke about...well, things. But you made it too easy on that one! I mean, forbidden knowledge...yeah, no, I'm going to be careful about that.

She wiped away a tear at the side of her face, still fighting against the laughing fit that had taken over her. She didn't doubt that Ash would be mad at the outburst, or the jest at his expense, she only hoped that he would be willing to overlook it as good fun.

In all seriousness though, I'm being careful. Like I said, the orb was...contained, until today. But I think...I think that my spirit magic, among everything else should help me...to stay on the right path, so to speak. That, and my friends.

She smiled at Ash as she mentioned the last part. She had no doubt that the people around her would keep her in check, just through their very presence.

"Oh, really."

"Well, if you start wearing too much eyeliner and cackling maniacally, I'll be sure to find a horse trough to dunk your head in."Ash's affect was completely flat, as was his expression as he leaned forward with his hands clasped in front of his face. It was the sort of look that would normally be associated with frustration, or disappointment. "I imagine that'll shock you back to reality"

The thump of his tail on the couch betrayed his true feelings. Ash was hiding a smile behind those folded hands, which faded before he straightened up on the couch. His eyes were still on the orb, but... well. Anxiety always lacked teeth when he was around friends in Terrasphere.

"'l'll try not to worry about it. You're an adult, and you take the risks you're comfortable with."

"...besides, it's not like I'm not playing with fire myself, messing with whatever Terrasphere considers a 'ghost."He raised a hand towards the rotating runestone and put it away. "In which case, you have permission to 'exorcise' me in whatever way works."

Kyra couldn't help but laugh at the image of Ash trying to hold her under water, in order to expel whatever evil had overcome her. Sure, in theory it would work eventually - assuming she didn't just die and respawn somewhere else.

You got it...although I probably won't try the 'head under water' trick. That might turn you into a ghost, if I'm not careful with it. Which probably wouldn't solve the overall issue.

Kyra glanced up as the wispy voice suddenly spoke up again, a hint of sarcasm - or some sort of humour-based sound - on its words.

I rather think...that he would look better a ghost. That way you could...admire him to his core...

Kyra sat in silence for a moment, considering the words of the floating orb behind her. At first, she felt a chill pass through her, the words sounding ominous and uncomfortable. But as she slowly began to realise what the orb was saying, she turned to Ash with a sudden, large smile.

It...makes jokes. I'm starting to like this thing, more and more. Now I kind of feel bad that I locked it away at first. I mean yeah, it's got a bit of a creepy vibe going on...but see you to the core. Come on, that's funny.

"I'll keep that in mind. Though I'd like to think I'm pretty hard to kill." Ash paused, then leaned forward to rap on the table. Just in case Terrasphere paid attention to that sort of thing.

He turned his attention back to the orb. "Well, it might want to find less... morbid jokes. If you decide to have it following you around as some kind of familiar, you might run into people who are little less willing to give it the benefit of the doubt." He looked away from it just as quickly. It still unnerved him, seeing that familiar shape.

"...does make me wonder how I ended up with such a different skillset. Hanno sees souls too. Makes me feel like the odd one out." He smiled weakly and shrugged. "Not that it bothers me, but it's just another one of those Terrasphere mysteries."

Something flickered in the corner of his eye - an alert from the system. One of those "pay attention to the real world" messages. He made a face, and opened his palm menu. He'd been talking longer than he thought. "...looks like the game's calling me out for playing too long."

...wow, did he actually sound disappointed about that? Ash's expression seemed confused, but smoothed out afterwards. "It was good talking, though. It's always nice to be able to hang out with friends instead of worrying about life-or-death situations."

He chugged down the rest of his now lukewarm hot chocolate. "Thanks for the invite, and the snacks. Next time I'll be the one to treat you, alright? He smirked. "Gotta keep the friend barter economy going."

Kyra nodded, unfurling herself from the couch ever so slightly. Her ears twitched at the thought of receiving alerts from the game - had she ever gotten any of those? She didn't remember, but it's possible she disabled them, or ignored them.

Oh...yeah! Yeah no problem. I guess getting back to the real world once in a while would be pretty important, while we still can. Right?

She grinned, before setting her own empty cup on the table. She glanced up at the orb, considering whether or not it could be trained - something that she doubted could be done. Maybe I can teach it to sit and stay too...heh.

I'll probably stick around here a while yet, if you're on later. I've got a few things to take care of...that, and I spend far too much time around here.

She accentuated the final comment with a smile, hoping the jest would be picked up. Although the truth behind it stung a little - she did spend a lot of time in the virtual world. Thankfully, her job allowed for it - a surprising benefit of what she did. Probably one of the few benefits...

It's nice to get together and just...talk, every once in a while. We should definitely do this more often - as much fun as it is to be fighting...whatever is thrown at us, sometimes peace and relaxation is a nice change of pace.
