Pormont, often spoken of as the 'breadbasket of Falderen', was not a place one would think of as a place where much action and adventure would take place. Sure, there were ruins here and there of long-gone traces of civilisation, but those were only long-faded marks of violence, imprints of footsteps left behind from a less peaceful time. There indeed was a time once, before the blessed banner of light united the kingdom, that life was a tenuous flame threatened by shadows of beasts and monstrosities. But then, heroes rose to slay the beasts that crept and stamp out the monstrosities that stalked, and then came the age of humanity.

That was long ago. The blood spilled has long since dried to nothing and the bones since crumbled to dust. But though sundered flesh could rot and decompose,

Hup!

-zzzzttt-

metal could only rust,

Hah!

-krnch-

and magic often lingered for good.

...and there we go!

With outsize strength, even for her fairly large Faerin frame, Ludmilla's unnaturally formed muscle and bone contorted into impossible formations that mauled and bludgeoned, leaving lumps of crushed and warped metal where the unspeaking guardians of this place once stood post. For however long they had languished here, and for whatever long-lost purpose - be they products of inscrutable ancient engineers or a left behind by a recent Starcalled incursion - they had now been released from their duty of patrolling this sealed ruin. By force.

Should be the last of- oh, more of you?

The wordless clanking of more stiff-jointed automaton soldiers answered Ludmilla as they emerged from the dark, blocking the way. She had come here, following a tasty scent from the surface, but never imagined that blasting a smoking crater into the earth where she lost the scent - amidst a column of collapsed pillars that seemed another ubiquitous feature of the Falderen countryside - would send her tumbling down here.

COME, THEN!

...

Now, she wasn't so much interested in finding a way out as exploring this place, getting to the bottom of what had drawn her here with the unmistakeable reek of potent arcana, something her constantly demanding appetite simply must investigate. That tingling in the back of her throat propelled her into action again as she threw back her arms and prepared to let her flesh bubble with unnatural vigour once more.

kkkrrrkKKkrkrrkRKKNNNTTTHHHHNNNNKKKK

...!?

A collapse. Her form stabilised at a moment's notice; she threw herself back and skidded along the tunnel floor, some kind of maintenance shaft or perhaps sewer. The years and undergrowth had rendered its original identity unrecognisable - that and the fact the ceiling had just fallen in, an obliterating avalanche of dirt, rock and ancient brickwork that all but reduced the small contingent of enemies to sparking scrap among the jumbled stones. Then, movement in the rubble-dust!

Hi! Hello? Fell down? Still alive?

Dropping the offensive and closing in, swaying side to side curiously, Ludmilla approached the dust-dappled sunbeam left by the second hole someone had knocked into this ruin today, peering through the settling dust. Caution first - there was a non-zero chance that these would be meddlers, but she would not begrudge them a chance to prove the contrary. She was in a good mood today, on a full belly at least.

Life crystals. They were strange and mostly unexplained structures scattered throughout the world of Arcia. Some scholars from MIT tried to present theories that would explain their existence, yet none would come even close to being verifiable. Thus, these seemingly indestructible structures remained an enigma, one that was for the most part exploited by only the magia.

Which was precisely why MAI was attempting to create a comprehensive map that would aid any of her fellow machines in easily locating them. For the magia, unlike all the other races, relied on a unique source of energy. Their bodies, as human-like as they were, were indeed made of metal and oil, and their cores fed on life energies from their surroundings rather than the life that they would innately have within themselves. Thus, these crystals served as practically infinite batteries from which they could easily recharge by merely resting nearby.

This was MAI's current self-requested task. One she expected to aid for, yet…

"Query - Why did the Starcalled designation-'Chako' leave the town without a guide if she is unfamiliar with the surrounding areas?"

She had managed to run into a child that was already familiar to her! Emmie's nanny, to be precise. The tone of the question was far from accusatory or mad, she didn't mind helping someone who was lost. But she wasn't entirely sure what the girl was doing all the way here in Pormont, given that this location was nowhere near Acelios' home… so she could only hope that she did not already get fired from the nanny post. If Emmie was already getting used to her, getting another nanny could potentially have negative effects, and furthermore-

Her troubled train of thoughts quickly became interrupted as the ground beneath them shook. Almost instinctively, MAI's anti-gravity powers kicked in, as she used them for movement so often that she might have been in the air more often than on the ground by now. But as the firm and solid earth beneath them became anything but, she realized that her feline company was not afforded such luxuries… or, at least, most likely was not.

From the small holes in the back of a hoodie she wore emerged two radiant metallic wings, the membranes between the individual rods of the frame formed of translucent and malleable metallic scales, the single flap of them propelling her toward Chako as she grabbed onto the feline's hand.

❰ Omni-directional defense matrix ❱

A hexagonal blue bubble made out of hard light appeared around them as they became consumed by the falling rubble and dust. Not very good for her circuitry, that was for sure… but as long as she held onto the other girl, she was sure that her defenses would hold until all was calm. And sure enough, the impact was quite soft for the both of them as a result. Though, hearing yet another voice was perhaps a bit troubling.

The bubble expanded and completely burst, practically flinging the large chunk of rock that was on top of the two girls as they would raise from the pile of rubble, dust slowly settling. Her eyes quickly locked onto the fae(?) curiously looking at them.

"Greetings - …greetings."

Last exploration bout had ended with Chako arriving at an undead camp, but surely it wouldn't be the case this time too. Surely she'd find some really pretty and very safe sights this time around! Just a normal sightseeing trip with 0 risks involved! Today was definitely going to be a safe and fun exploration day!

... Except Chako wasn't finding much of anything, so... When she found MAI, she ended up being very eager to follow her around to whatever interesting place she wanted to explore, "Well, that's the whole point of being in the Explorer's League, right!? I want to explore!" She replied to MAI's query.

Meeting MAI reminded Chako of little Emmie. She wondered how the little baby was doing... Miss Clarissa hadn't really called upon Chako again to do work as a nanny since, so either she just needed a nanny for a short period of time, or Chako was fired due to doing a bad job... Chako hoped it was the former.

Before Chako could ask MAI if she knew how little Emmie was doing though, they ended up going into some ruins and... "N-nyaaa!?" The ground was falling!? Why!? They hadn't done anything!

Except... Chako was suddenly embraced by MAI who was flying with some super cool metal wings, "T-thank you!"

MAI even protected them from the falling floor, now ceiling, above them with a protective field and... Huh? Who was that?

Chako heard a different voice near them, she looked in its direction to find... A girl? "Ah, h-hi! Y-yes, we fell! And yes, we're still alive!"

Chako then quickly glanced at her surroundings, trying to see where had they even fallen into and, "W-wait, what's that!?" She saw... Scraps? Destroyed scraps? Broken down scraps? Chako didn't know how to explain it, but it didn't feel like something she'd see in the middle of Falderen! It was so weird! Like... "W-wait, that wouldn't be a Magia, would it? Are they okay!?" Was it one Magia? Was it multiple? Chako didn't know, it was hard to be certain of anything amidst all those debris and dust... It still didn't make her any less worried though, could she even heal Magia? And even when they became scraps? Chako had no idea.

She didn't even know if they were Magia in the first place. She just didn't know what else would look like scraps, so she assumed they were... She hoped she was wrong.

Hearing friendly - or at least humanoid - voices as the dust settled and revealed the forms of @Chako and @MAI huddled in a protective stance, Ludmilla's briefly unfolded flesh knew to subtly retract and behave as living limbs should.
For the newcomers, there was enough destruction beside the collapsed rubble for anyone to discern that there had been a (quite one-sided) fight here just prior, and Ludmilla was evidently the victor.

Hey! Know you; seen you before. You were...

In the storm of steel, amidst rapturous struggle, Ludmilla had remembered a voice. Silent in its frequency, heard by naught but the souls of her kin, that Magia had sung out. A lullaby, a call for the weary mother to lay down arms, a tacit refusal to be assimilated into a kindred mire of mechanised memories, a dirge that accompanied her to her rest.

Ah, yes - that song. Yes. Ludmilla remembered, she remembered much and more. Yes.

...remember your song. Szofrit...mother. Machine mother.

Ludmilla raises her hands and gestures vaguely, tracing the inimicable shape of that constructed goddess as she had been, morningstar in the steel-shredded skies. Of course MAI would remember - a leal daughter would keep that filial piety alive, even encased in calcified sorrow. The body, even artificial, would keep the score - and it seemed that this one had gained some auguments since, powerful enough to disperse that huge chunk of broken brickwork with nary a thought. So she had become...

Hm.
Evolution, such as it is.

Don't know you, though?

Now cocking her head at an angle comparable to a confused animal, Ludmilla regarded Chako with a friendly curiosity. This one...was new, but there was absolutely a vibrant scent of pliant arcana about her. These two were strong, very strong, light streaming from within them that rivalled the dark seeping from the cracks of this vessel, just as the sun now streamed into this tunnel's no-longer-confined space.

Hi! I'm Ludmilla! Who are you?

As she circled about, Ludmilla hummed a merrily tuneless song to herself, prodding one of the still-moving automatons trapped under the rubble. It wasn't any kind of Magia she had seen before, so she understood; with one merciless stamp, Ludmilla crushes its cranial chassis and extricates her foot.

-sppzzsstt...

Not Magia. Not real Magia. Not player. Safe to kill.

With a dissonantly cheery grin, Ludmilla pointed down into the darkness of the tunnel, gaze alternating between the two newcomers. As she now paced a short distance into the shadows, the gaping hole in the ceiling allowed MAI and Chako to glimpse various angles of Ludmilla in the half-light, her unbothered eagerness to delve evident.

Ludmilla is here to find something tasty! Deep in here. Something tasty, something meaty-metal; maybe Magia, if you're looking for Magia. Are you?

Well, that could have gone better. But at least they were not crushed, so that had to count for something. They also haven't been immediately attacked by the girl who, instead, called out to them in a… reasonably friendly manner. In fact… she was then very quick to address MAI as someone who she already knew. This prompted the magia to start going through her memory, through every registry… but there was ultimately nothing. Soon, it became clear why- the girl spoke of Szofrit, the great fight for the Dragonship. The Handler's Lullaby.

"Identification - This Individual was present for the battle inside of the Dragonship. No designation assigned. Side chosen… unknown."

Ultimately, the army of Starcalled and Landers alike that marched against the mother of machines divided at a moment most crucial. Those that only wished to strike out and pierce the artificial heart so it would beat no more… and those who wished to save a soul corroded by dissonance. Which side did this fae choose? Could she harbor ill will toward the magia who, almost, led t he charge to save the mechanical leader? But she quickly moved on to Chako, showing nary a sign of hostility. Still, MAI hesitated to let her eyes off of her.

"Introduction - This unit's designation is 'MAI'."

But finally, she eyed to mechanical carcasses spread all over the ruins.

"Analysis - Units not identified as Dragonship magia. Assessment of 'Not real magia' is not incorrect. Sentience unknown, but unlikely. Constructs more likely over 'living beings'."

Then again, she would need more time and closer contact if she wanted to be sure of any of what she had just said. The two cables that hung from below her hoodie almost like two thin tails almost twitched, the connectors at the end ready to pierce into the metallic shells for further analysis were it necessary.

Chako recognized the word Szofrit as the evil baddy brainwashing Magia, but MAI was referred to as her mother...?

Somehow that didn't quite feel right... It felt like Chako was missing something of the conversation.

"Oh, hi Ludmilla, I'm Chako!" Chako responded, only to instantly jump in place when Ludmilla stomped her foot, "N-nyaa!?" S-she just destroyed the moving scrap!

MAI was saying something about side chosen, but Chako had no idea about what that meant either.

However, Ludmilla's next words made Chako take a step back and hold onto MAI more tightly... Hearing the word 'player' again would have been bothersome enough as is in a normal situation, but... Safe to kill? And she said it with such a smile on her face... Chako was scared. This girl was dangerous.

Hearing MAI's assessment of the situation did make Chako relax a small bit though. She was still wary of Ludmilla, but at least... "At least they're not alive..." Chako heaved a sigh of relief. At least the construct wasn't just murdered right in front of her... Chako still shivered just from thinking of that.

"Tasty...?" Chako had a feeling that Ludmilla didn't mean cake, "I'm not... Not looking for anything in particular, just... Just exploring?"

Chako thought for half a second before whispering on MAI's ears, "She scares me... But I'm also scared of leaving her to her own devices." She didn't want to leave right now. Not when Ludmilla talked so happily about killing others...

Chako silently prayed to lady Uene that this was all a misunderstanding and Ludmilla just meant that it was okay to blow up mindless constructs... She prayed really hard for that.

'Side chosen'? A curious question. But all questions are by nature curiosities.

Well, that was not so much a question as a statement. In the chaos, as the march of the machines stamped out the starlight of many a Traveler, who could blame @MAI for not knowing what form Ludmilla had taken, what horrors she had wrought in that struggle? That child had her hands full, convincing her wrathful mother to spare this land.

Incidentally, Ludmilla had not harmed any Starcalled in that melee - as always, to her own bemusement, she had ended up probably ensuring the survival of more than a few, protecting them with her ineffable bulwark. Memories from that battle had been faint for the most part, as she had been in a reconstructive state for some portion of it, higher brain functions suspended as her piecemeal remnants held against the impossible odds of obliteration.

But what she knew was that she had never the slightest consideration towards allowing Szofrit any chance of survival. To consume that which logic dictated would be inedible, indelible; her goal frustrated, Ludmilla had intended to take her satisfaction instead in reducing that upstart pseudo-goddess to so much scrap.

For growing such sour grapes, the insolent tree must fall.

Chako. MAI. @Chako. MAI. Ludmilla!

Pointing back and forth between the two, Ludmilla repeated their names and ended by turning her thumbs back to her own chest. That seemed to be her way of indicating that she was happy in calling introductions to a close.

...constructs. Yes, seems to be. MAI? Very smart. Not alive. Never were.

Then, circling about and picking through the scattered automatons, Ludmilla takes a far brisker and less elegant approach than MAI's intuitive analytics. With a forceful grip strenuous enough to warp and imprint finger-marks upon the dinted metal, she simply grunts and rips apart the limbs and chasses of the closest automaton, like a fisher shucking shellfish for pearls.

No core. Must be getting their power from somewhere else. From there.

The halves of a still-sparking chestpiece are tossed away into the dark, sputtering circuitry barely lighting the space ahead; a yawning darkness inclining slightly downward into the earth. Ludmilla pointed again in that direction, inhaling deeply and exhaling a rattling breath.

Ah...I know. I know what it is, now.

This smell, Magia. Real. Magia. From...Dragonship?

Eye flaring with interest at this discovery - presumably also something of note to MAI - the faerin walked undaunted into the darkness without a backwards glance. These two 'explorers' could come along if they wanted; not like Ludmilla cared so much about her reputation when something this intriguing had revealed itself.

...no, not quite? Hm. Too meaty. Dragonship Magia... smell clean. Air and metal. Scorched by flames. By electricity.

*squelch*

The sound of Ludmilla's flesh unfolding once more, down there in the dark, was only very quietly audible in the absence of further conflict, competed with only by her thoughtfully plodding steps and whatever noise those other two chose to make.
Her neck elongated; not so much as to be immediately unnatural, but enough to be noticeable. A spiny black protrusion emerged from a subtle slit in the folds of her trachea, almost invisible if it were not for its serpentine motion as it swayed in the air with cilia catching motes of mesmerising sensory feedback.

This smell...

Her mouth spoke as her second tongue tasted the air.

Mixing. Blood, gunpowder. Death lies below.

A bizarre little thing wasn't she? Ludmilla, that was, not Chako. As curious as the little feline was, she at least tried to resemble a sane individual. The fae, on the other hand.. Her companion from up above was right to feel at least some level of concern. Not necessarily because of the actions taken so far, they were not too far removed from the average player that believed this world to be nothing more than a realistic game. An unfeeling code.

And indeed, MAI was far more interested in the idea that there was… a 'real' magia, as described by Ludmilla, somewhere in here. Not something she would have expected, but it would not necessarily be that strange, given this place's proximity to a life crystal. So as the fae passed them, showcasing her inclination toward physicality, the magia's gaze followed her frame even as it became swallowed by shadows.

Chako's grip might have remained on her soft clothes, but her body would slowly start floating forward, following in those same steps, her feet only occasionally touching down on the ground for the sole reason of propelling her back into the air, weightless body floating through the air mere centimeters above anything solid. At the same time, something materialized beside the two girls, a large rectangular metallic object that the feline was already acquainted with. After all, it was the same camouflaged storage box that she stored a certain man's mechanical digit inside of.

Only, this one was colored slightly differently, and instead of opening fully to reveal the space inside, only one of the smaller sides flipped open and produced a small drone from within.

EXPLORATION ASSISTANCE UNIT - OPERATIONAL. INITIATING 'GOOD COMPANY' MODE. EMPLOYING ILLUMINATION SOURCE

Along with its mechanical speech, the 'eye' in front would light up like a flashlight, illuminating the path forward just as it said. Since Ludmilla was the one leading, it was a good idea to keep her in sight within this darkness, after all. Even if she herself seemed plenty capable of navigating here without this light.

The more Ludmilla talked, the more creeped out Chako was... There was something really strange about that girl, and it seemed to be the bad and scary kind of strange.

Yet MAI... Didn't seem to be too troubled about it? Chako wasn't sure, but MAI didn't seem to be showing much of a reaction.

Then... She started moving. And some strange sounds echoed into Chako's sensitive ears... She never heard anything like that before. She didn't know what to make of it... What even was that!?

Chako was starting to doubt that it was a good idea to stay here... But Ludmilla's smile as she spoke about anyone that wasn't Starcalled being safe to kill was stuck in Chako's mind... She didn't want to leave that strange girl alone if she could help it.

So, she followed after MAI once she started moving. Cautiously taking steps further, until she saw MAI summon that metal box again, "Nya!?" Why did she summon that thing again? Was she going to store parts of the constructs there or something!?

Just as MAI did that, Ludmilla's voice reached Chako's ears... The smell of death, blood and gunpowder... Chako never smelled death and gunpowder before, but she knew the stench of blood... Yeah, that was there, alright... But why did Ludmilla sound excited as she said that? Chako shivered as she thought this far. This was getting scarier by the second. I shouldn't have come here... But she also didn't want to leave... Or rather, she wanted to, but she felt like she shouldn't.

"Nyaaaa!?" Chako screamed as MAI's light source illuminated Ludmilla, "W-what's happening to you!?" Chako's eyes may not be that good, but they were definitely good enough to see that there was something wrong with Ludmilla once she was illuminated! This was way too weird!

If only @MAI knew of what relationship there existed between Ludmilla and the presence trapped behind those eyes that now sparkled with manic light, she may have had a little sympathy for the one who held the yoke.
Would beings of code that could think, feel and fear be necessarily any better companions than playthings, existing in this nightmarish world where disasters were curated and paraded for the amusement and horror of its Travelers? Ask the one blindly encased within that shell what they thought, and perhaps the answer would be something of satisfaction.

Oh? Metal friend? What are you?

As MAI released the mechanoid companion to light the way, Ludmilla spun around to regard its unblinking aperture of an 'eye', waving hello as her pupils contracted to pinpricks in the sudden brightness. Something was off about this construct, in such a way that she was drawn to something within it - pulsing, pulsing lightly.

As she extended her hand slightly, Ludmilla's neck did the opposite and returned to its 'natural' state, the strange tonguelike protrusion seamlessly retracting into the fold of skin that sealed over as though it had never opened up with such disturbing ease in the first place. That had been enough to terrify @Chako, who was not so accustomed to the darker aspects of such Starcalled as Ludmilla.

Metal friend. Wouldn't happen to be...? Haha...how interesting.

It was hard to pass a verdict on whether fortune or misfortune drove Chako to engage with this world at such a juncture, perfectly positioned between the calamities that were so often milestones within its story. She would be able to see its comforts, wonders - and now, its hints of horrors - in good time.

For now, she had MAI in no small part to thank as part of that initiation into the unknown and unknowable - the child who had soothed a lost mother amidst the bloodstained battlefield, protected her in those great halls of academia that now lay in ruin.
To that end, Chako had probably heard enough regarding the presence Ludmilla suspected as she stared blankly into the blinding light of MAI's drone.

Though Ludmilla didn't know its name, she had enough experience holding such memories of her own, though in a decidedly...different manner.

Who is inside metal friend?
How did you...put them there, I wonder?

Fixing MAI with a questioning smile, Ludmilla lingered in the beam of illumination for a few seconds, before sweeping forward with the airy clunks of her boots thudding lightly on the metallic floor of the tunnel.

My flesh unfolds. Guides the way. To below. Don't worry. Not hungry right now.

Without turning, she addresses Chako with an answer that likely raised more questions than warranted. Never did she stop skipping forward, at ease as much as MAI's ethereal floating 'steps' - at least, until she came to an abrupt stop, a few minutes in.

Big door. Can't get through.

The light of the torch beam fell upon a door as described, a great slab of unblemished metal in hemisphered halves that sealed the tunnel. Its design incorporated winding lines of circuitry converging upon the central fissure, in the center of which was a strange 'keyhole'. In actuality, any Starcalled would immediately be able to recognise what this was; not a keyhole, but a socket, though in an unusual '| | |' shape of three furrows that-

Getting rid of door. Hah!

Immediately, a mote of light flared to being at Ludmilla's finger, flicked towards the barred entryway. A withering blast of heat, one that would set a geiger counter crackling for a moment, then quiet sizzling into nothing. As the smoke cleared, the door appeared quite unaffected, and Ludmilla shrugged the failure off.

Door is troublesome! Ludmilla try again. Unless...?

Ludmilla backs away in a rare (for her, at least) show of cooperative spirit. Her gaze flicks between her companions, eager to see - to dare them show - what their proposed solutions are to an adventurer's simplest dilemma.

It was obvious that Ludmilla had some abilities that would be considered unsettling at best by a good chunk of even the Travelers. After all, most folk treated this place, Arcia, as a bit of a tourism locale. And, most certainly… it's realism would ensure their continued good behavior, for empathy disallowed cruelty against those who appeared human, even if one knew that deep down they were but code.

People got attached to story characters.

People put googly eyes on toasters and would call them by a nickname.

And then there were those who lacked these traits, would suppress their natural impulses to fit in with a group of people, and allowed grotesqueness or cruelty reign. It was different from playing common violent games, where the barrier of fantasy was obvious, violence sometimes so absurd that it crossed into a completely different realm. None of that was Arcia, at least not on most days.

". . . ."

After the little robot became active, the metal box would slowly close up and float back behind MAI where it would then activate its camouflage again, from one end to the other, becoming full transparent and out of everyone's sight.

"Nomination - Fallen Dragonship Artillery n.1. Current purpose - Multifunctional drone dock. It only houses my creations, invisible and floating to not get in the way in most circumstances."

Indeed, she spoke the truth. After all, she possessed two of these platforms. The one she had just briefly revealed was one that she used far more often, carrying her drones and other such equipment, so that it would not have to be kept on her body or in her inventory in case of emergency need. It was the second 'box' that Chako was familiar with, that housed the remains of certain other magia… and the one that Ludmilla appeared to sense.

"Interpretation - Behavior and appearance consistent with the sanest and least crazy metamorph user. Alternative… presence of high levels of Syndral Fractus."

POTENTIAL CLASSIFICATION - NOTHING THERE, DO NOT OPEN THIS [REDACTED]

These words were more directed at Chako, perhaps offering the girl some level of understanding as to what they might have been dealing with. Of course, none of what MAI just said could be verified at the moment, unless Ludmilla herself opted to chime in. Especially once they arrived at the closed door. One that seemed to be quite resilient to blunt force trauma.

"Suspicion - Presence of three individual slots aligned with the composition of current party. Suggestion - Starcalled Ludmilla can try to slot her fingers in to see if they would fit."

LOSS OF FINGERS - ACCEPTABLE PARAMETER.

Ludmilla seemed to react to Chako's words as she went back to looking normal after being illuminated... Chako wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing, but at least she seemed less scary now.

Also, Chako could appreciate the nickname of 'metal friend' to MAI's drone. It was cute... At least Ludmilla did have a cute naming sense... And she would be kinda cute without the weird strange shape changes too! Right now she was just terrifying though.

Then, MAI explained why she had summoned the metal box, "Oh, I see..." It was still kinda weird for Chako to hear stuff like 'fallen Dragonship artillery', but based on what she saw of Magia so far, as well as some of the stuff she heard on Emmie's party, there was probably even weirder stuff out there.

"I-I don't think there is anyone inside that metal friend, Ludmilla!" MAI wouldn't have put stuff like Acelios finger there, right? And Chako didn't think that there was some kind of super intelligent small insect piloting it either, so... It was probably remotely controlled.

"N-nya!?" Ludmilla's exclamation about her flesh unfolding once again made Chako get scared of her... Yeah, no cute nicknames to drones will make her any less creepy! Chako concluded.

Then, MAI put out the most unbelievable statement of the day so far, "The sanest and least crazy one...?" Chako repeated her words in disbelief, "I-I'm really worried about what other metamorphs you have seen before, MAI!" Maybe she just got confused in how to express herself? Perhaps that weird thingy that affects Magia speech made her words come out wrong? Chako wasn't sure, but she was definitely hoping that MAI just made a mistake there.

The other thingy MAI said just made Chako more confused, "Syndral Fractus...?" She hadn't heard of this one before... It had lady Syndra's name in it though, "Is it a curse or something? Something lady Syndra inflicts on those that anger her...?" It didn't seem like that was it... Ludmilla seemed to be mad, not cursed... Especially with the way she talked about her own flesh, it felt like what she did with herself was done on purpose, not so much of a curse's side effect... Or main effect.

Either way, they eventually arrived at a door, and Ludmilla instantly tried to blast it off to no avail... Chako wasn't sure how to handle that either, but then MAI made a suggestion, "W-wouldn't that just shock Ludmilla!?" That looked like a socket at least! And there were constructs here, so like... I-it could be one!

"M-maybe you need to put something there in the door to activate it? Maybe something from the constructs...?" Chako tried looking around, but she wasn't seeing anything that would fit the plug... Wait, I have something better than my eyes for this!

"Let me try something!"
Chako then started flicking her tongue in high frequencies that human ears couldn't hear.

Her first attempt to echolocate provided nothing note-worthy, so she walked closer to a construct body and tried echolocating again, "Oh, I think I found something!"

Chako rummaged through the construct's destroyed body to get an intact piece that matched the door socket, "I think you can try putting this there!" She showed the piece to Ludmilla and MAI, but made no effort to actually put it in there herself... It was a bit scary.

She'd gladly give the piece away to anyone who asked or snatched it from her hands though.

As @MAI explained the exact mechanisms by which these 'metal friends' were kept and released, the dock shimmered away into dormancy. However, Ludmilla's fascinated gaze remained fixed upon it as she craned in for a closer look at where its cloaked form met the air seamlessly.

Ah! Metal friend comes from a home! Would like to...meet them someday. Also, meet mother. Dragonship, mother. Meet again.

There was something ominous about her halting words, her fixated stare upon MAI and the way her tongue wet her lips after each disjointed phrase. Something that didn't quite line up with her light tone and skipping steps.
Surely nothing to worry about, though, yet. Thus far, aside from her more obvious eccentricities, it's not like Ludmilla had shown anything beyond somewhat excessive but still friendly curiosity towards her fellow Starcalled.

@Chako. Not familiar with Syndral Fractus? Ludmilla will teach you~

Think of body. Pot of soft clay.
Sticky, sticky honey inside - you, inside.
Animancy helps to pinch, mold, add slurry.
Change size, shape; mend cracks too.
Do too much though, and pot will...

Sploosh.

All over floor. Honey is sticky. Big mess.
Syndra won't bother. Byebye.

That's not to mention how helpful she was being, too - so knowledgeable about such things as Syndral Fractus, of all things. It was hopefully as intuitive of an analogy as Chako would need, if punctuated by an unpleasant onomatopoeia and sinister implications towards its end.

My fingers? Sure~ Ludmilla can try.

Rolling back her sleeve and taking MAI's suggestion entirely at face value, Ludmilla was seemingly unconcerned with the possibility of coming into contact with lethal voltage or any crushing mechanisms within the strange openings.

This flesh, not the same as those. I do not borrow this...shape. I am already whole. By thought, I become multitudes.

She was already a few steps forward, explaining the crucial differences between herself and the average Metamorph practitioner, when she turned at the sound of Chako rummaging through some debris. The pluglike mechanism was offered, and Ludmilla gladly accepted it with both hands before turning about-face again.

Hm? Oh, this is probably better. Thank you~

The fit is a little awkward, on account of how dented by sheer force its source was, but after some grunts of effort, the thing slots in well enough. There is a groaning of gears, arrythmic and reluctant, but the doors begin to separate all the same. Sparks from the central seam indicate some kind of previous damage to the structure - maybe it had been forced open earlier?

...!

A blast of unpleasantly warm, charnel air surges from below. The smell of death intermingles odorously with the sulfurous burning of gunpowder and a third scent; the reeking steely oil-grime of heavy industry. In the bowels of the earth, some great mechanism rumbled distantly, painfully.

YES! I CAN SCENT IT.
IT IS CLOSE.

Voice lowering to an unnaturally guttural snarl of excitement for a moment, Ludmilla's eyes flash with the scant light that emits from a shower of sparks above, just before she gestures urgently forwards. Suggestions of a staircase's steps, made from the same metallic sheeting as the tunnel, are all MAI and Chako can make out before she bolts forward, into the muggy downward dark.

Ludmilla's hope to meet mother didn't exactly make MAI smile. Well… most things didn't, at least not while she had the body that she did. But that was besides the point, as she contemplated just how involved with the entire magia ordeal Ludmilla might have been, and why she would want to meet Szofrit again… after all, the mother of machines was no more. The Starcalled and Levi had made sure of that… no cost too great for that, apparently. And while the violet-maned magia had her own plans in that regard, well… she did not plan to share them with anyone for a while.

Her explanation of what Syndral Fractus entailed was equally as colorful as the rest of her babblings, so MAI opted to look at how confused Chako might have looked after all of that, and added a bit of her own.

"Clarification - Syndral Fractus is an affliction associated with the use of magics labeled as taboo in the wide world of Arcia. Namely animancy that allows for life force to substitute mana in casting."

"Danger - Manipulating life force and the mortal flesh can cause irreversible damage known as Syndral Fractus. Results - Mutations of the body. Scarring of soul."

That probably sounded scary enough to convey how dangerous said affliction could be, at least compared to 'Sticky honey all over the floor'.

As for the doors that were blocking their path, MAI wanted to see just how far Ludmilla would go with these antics. The magia was already preparing for what would be far more likely to open the door, one of the tail-like things that hanged down from her hoodie behind her legs. Wires that ended in malleable connectors. After all, the openings on the door were like an electrical socket. So it seemed reasonable to she would be able to connect herself to the operating system of the door and force it open that way.

So when Chako suddenly derailed that whole line of thinking by stopping Ludmilla and finding a different connector in the remains of the guardians, MAI would abruptly let go of her own wire that rested in her palm, pretending like she didn't intend on using it in the first place.

Watching the door open certainly made it feel like they were in a proper game dungeon, about to enter a boss arena, or perhaps at least another part of the sprawling underground structure. Whatever could be hidden down here? And would it aid her own pursuit of the magia and their nature, their past, their true origin? These thoughts flashed through MAI's fleeting mind as the unpleasant wave of heat and scents washed over them all, her eyes narrowing as they tried to lock onto anything in the fathomless dark that invited them. An invitation that Ludmilla took all too heartily.

". . . . !"

Sharply turning toward Chako, MAI would extend her arm toward the child. And assuming she would take it, the magia would pull her forward, letting he rest on her own back as the two tail-like wires would wrap around the feline to secure her in place. As awkward as such setup would be like, it would allow MAI to bolt forward as well in hot pursuit… something she would do by herself if the present company declined to grab her hand when offered.

Okay, so... Chako was definitely misunderstanding something. Ludmilla talked about wanting to meet mother, but uhn... She was Starcalled, right? So her mother was on Earth... Dragonship mother though...?

Chako racked her brain trying to make sense of what Lumilla was saying... Maybe... Something to do with little Emmie's mom? This Dragonship thingy was connected to her, right? Chako felt like she heard something about it while babysitting Emmie, but she didn't pay that much attention to the details... Maybe she should have.

Then, as Chako heard Ludmilla's explanation of what Syndral Fractus was, she shivered... It was a weird metaphor, but the meaning was clear enough... "A curse so bad that destroys your body and makes lady Syndra reject you..." She shivered more as she said it out loud... It was truly horrifying.

MAI's explanation only made it worse, "S-scarring of the soul!?" Right, that must have been what Ludmilla meant when she talked about the honey... "W-why would anyone even use this kind of crazy magic...?" It sounded even worse than suicide...

At least Chako learned that it was connected with some forbidden magic though... As in, she didn't have to worry about being cursed by lady Syndra by angering her without knowing... It was... Less scary like that.

Chako then took a second to remember why they were even talking about this in the first place... It was because... Because MAI thought Ludmilla could maybe have that curse? But with how cheerful Ludmilla was being, then maybe she was not...? Unless her strangeness came because her soul was scarred... Chako did not want to find out the truth behind that. It was too much.

And yet, the more she heard, the more she felt like she was having the truth forced upon her, "You're not... Borrowed...?" A body that was already her own... Chako did not get the multitude part, but she felt like she could understand what all that implied, "A scarred soul... Forgotten by lady Syndra... A body that is not borrowed..." She whispered more to herself than to anybody else, before turning to MAI, "She... Can't return to Earth, can she?" Chako knew it was a possibility. It could happen to anyone; she even longed for this herself... But it was her first time meeting someone who was UI-locked... Or at least Chako thought it was.

Also, hearing someone talk about it so openly, and in this kind of way... It made Chako sad... What had Arcia done to this person?

It was her first time seeing something that truly saddened her about Arcia. Something that she really didn't feel like was right.

Either way, the door was opened and... Chako really had no idea of what she was smelling, but she did not like it. And what even was that strange noise? She could hear something deep ahead, but she had no idea what that could be.

Ludmilla moved forward, her voice getting creepier by the second, "W-wait!" But Ludmilla was already running.

Next, MAI extended her arm towards Chako. Chako had no idea what was the reason behind that, since MAI didn't say anything, but she held MAI's hand, "Uhn... We run-? nya!?" Suddenly Chako was pulled to MAI's back and held together by some wires... Chako decided to just hug MAI as she started moving, "T-thank you...!"

She pondered for a second before continuing, "Hey... A scarred soul... Can't really be mended, can it?" She wanted to help... Ludmilla seemed to be mad... It was sad.

But... She would probably need a miracle to do anything... It was a pretty common sentiment for Chako, but right now, she really felt incredibly powerless... And that just made her sadder.

Return to Earth? But why would she?

Brie wasn't UI-Locked, though the thought had occurred to them and scared them shitless sometimes - not that it mattered to Ludmilla what Brie thought. Ludmilla would never die.
Ludmilla would live, live; she would would live to subsume all in her path, gorge on all the delicacies this world has to offer, witness its grand truths in all their inevitably overwhelming glory. Ludmilla would live until there was nothing left to indulge in, nothing left for this conduit to report.

In a way, Ludmilla saw understanding in @MAI. She was a sort of mother in her own right, and in turn reported to a sort of parent. One that held the leash in slack, scared fingers, not so ready to cut free while tenuously aware of what would happen if that veil which separated the world in Ludmilla's eyes from the sane reality in which they dwelt... were to fray further.

Ludmilla's soul was not broken. It was a well of undefinable shape and depth, from which nothing ever returned when cast in. She was oceanic, the great mystery. There was nothing broken about it. Ludmilla was whole. The flesh. The font of purity.

-clakclakclak-

The clack of Ludmilla's boot-heels on the seamless metal flooring broke the monotonous thunder of whatever innards this unusual ruin held, beginning to spiral in the darkness as the way down began to curve in on itself before corkscrewing in earnest.

If it weren't for the illumination that MAI provided with her useful little drones, it would be near impossible for even @Chako to see in this unpleasantly humid darkness, the sort of artificial heat of a steam bellows magnified many times to fill this space.

The spiral stairwell spilled into a expansive domed corridor of sorts that felt surely larger than a modern subway tunnel, severe in its dishevelment as dented wall panels and collapsed ventilation pipes spilled intermittent bursts of searing vapor. That was only visible between sparks emitting from still-live wires like spooling vines, hanging from burst sprinkler valves that dripped into puddles on the floor.
The only illumination down here were the drones' highbeams and the occasionally flickering circle of light set into the ceiling, apparently running on some kind of backup power source and casting the entire scene in an unpleasant emergency-red haze.

Something violent had happened here for sure. These signs of disrepair were recent, as though a pitched combat had broken out, leaving patches of the squeaky polymer flooring ripped and molten in patches, accompanying similar damage to the walls and ceiling. Piles of scrap, recognisable as more of those automaton defenders that Ludmilla had razed down, lie battered and crushed against the walls. None moved, and it was just as well; with everything on Chako's mind, it may well have made her heart jump out of her throat.

This wasn't Ludmilla's doing, even with how likely the state of this place could have been attributed to her; this was too much damage to have been done since she literally just came down here, and a layer of moist grime had settled on the robotic remains.
That indicated some time had passed since the incident that decommissioned them. If not Ludmilla, though, then who or what could have passed through while wreaking such havoc? Could it be whatever had damaged the large sealed door from earlier?

But now was not the time for that. Up ahead, mad laughter could be heard ringing out from some side passage, diverting off the main tunnel to the left. No, right? The noises here and her fluctuating volume made it hard to tell.

Come out, come out! Or Ludmilla will FIND you! Where are you... HIDING!?

A loud smashing noise punctuated her search as something was unceremoniously thrown out of the way, the jarring sound of metal ripping free following after. If the pair hadn't decided to just leave Ludmilla to her crazed devices - for this seemed to be entirely her twisted volition - they would find her trying to tear past a blocked section of corridor, one broken pipe and panel at a time.

It's here! The thing you're looking for! Come help? COME, HELP ME!

Ludmilla must have heard their rushed footsteps coming down the stairs; at least she recognised that they were there. Hearing her scream for help, though, was jarring - it was as if she had taken on a completely different persona for all of a single sentence, as though it were not her own voice screaming earnestly for help.

What was her deal? What was down here?
