Kyra

She'd spent the morning in the encampment, helping to alleviate the stress on the ever growing line of refugees needing help. Like always, it seemed like an endless stream. It hadn't helped that some sort of conflict had erupted in the encampment itself, leaving more injured to be taken care of. Not that Kyra had seen what had occurred, but the extra burden had put her in a sour mood.

"Can't believe that people just...fight. In a medical centre. As if that's acceptable. Completely, utterly irresponsible if you ask me!"

She glowered at the medical attendant that had been sitting across from her. A younger human, probably around sixteen or seventeen, who Kyra had come to work with quite frequently over the last few days. He'd been helpful - always striving to provide assistance where he could. She'd seen the envy in his eyes when she'd healed with just a touch; her magical abilities giving her something he could never have. If only he understood the price she paid for it every time she used it. Some are jealous of what they don't have, without understanding the burden it places on those who do. Ignorance, as they say, is bliss...

She heard the call. The return to work. Stretching, she smiled at the boy - trying desperately to remember his name. Somehow, it always slipped her mind, and this time appeared no different than any other.

"Sounds like they need us again, doesn't it? No real rest! Not until everyone has been helped, at least. It could be a lot worse though-"

Her sentence was cut off as something exploded in the near distance. A look of horror took over the faces of everyone nearby, an expression Kyra's was almost certain her own face was reflecting. She sprung to her feet, rushing out of the resting area they'd been sitting in, colliding with a small collection of people as she tried to figure out what was going on. Almost in a blind panic, she turned to the nearest individual, her eyes still scanning the area as she spoke.

"What happened? Did someone get hurt? We heard an explo-"

Another explosion, as something else seemed to erupt, this time the fireball rising into the sky only a few blocks away from where Kyra stood. Her eyes went wide as she realised the area. A surgical location, where she'd been not hours ago. She felt her mouth open in shock, her mind racing.

"No...oh no..."

Caelia hadn't been this far into Falderen before. She'd heard of Lyrwick and it's unfortunate circumstances, but she'd not actually visited...until today. The small Faerin made her way carefully through the encampment she'd managed to find, murmuring soft apologies each time she got in someone's way or stepped where she shouldn't have. Many of the Landers looked at her with suspicion, untrusting of a new face among their familiar saviors.

She didn't exactly blame them.

She paused as the ground beneath her feet shook, the tremor reaching deep into the encampment. People around her started to move, some diving for shelter while others scrambled to see what had caused the earth to shake. Caelia turned, eyes widening as she watched the camp spring alive like an anthill in a rainstorm.

Scrambling to survive.

I - What?

She found herself shoulder to shoulder with a beastfolk player, though the details of her aesthetic were for the moment lost on Caelia as she was swept up in the panic of the other's voice. She followed her gaze out in the distance, watching the fireball rise into the sky with her own eyes wide with shock...but also curiosity.

She didn't seem as horrified as the others around her.

Something's going on over there, clearly. You comin' to check it out or staying here?

She turned to look back at the beastfolk that had originally approached her, blinking slowly. She looked capable enough, probably had to be if she was spending any amount of time out here.

The individual beside her was speaking. She was aware of that, but the words were lost to the wind as Kyra's heart and mind raced. The fireball still flared in the sky above the encampment, signifying something. She had no idea what had occurred, what was occurring, or what dangers lie ahead. But as the other began moving towards it, Kyra knew she was needed there.

"Excuse me! Excuse me! Would you...damn it move! People need help! Move damn you!"

She pushed past the throngs moving against her, trying to get closer to the freeway that she could see. Every second counted, and right now fighting against the crowd wasn't helping. She just needed a single avenue, a single escape route...

She spotted the smaller individual from before, darting between people in order to get closer to the explosion. Kyra shifted her direction, following their path, eventually finding herself free and clear. Without thinking she rushed up to the small individual - Faerin, she could see that now - before grabbing their wrist and pulling them forwards.

"Come on! There's going to be people who need medical attention! Come on!"

She pulled the other along behind her, dragging them towards the centre of chaos whether they wanted it or not. She wasn't sure who they were - they weren't anyone that Kyra had ever seen before. Perhaps a new medical assistant. Doesn't matter. People to help. Focus.

The chaos was worse than she expected. Whatever had occurred, had left what appeared to be a blood soaked mess. She could see the brutal aftermath everywhere. Turning back to her newest addition, she glanced them over quickly, before returning her attention to the area around them.

"Do you have any medical experience? We need to triage. Work quickly...can you help me? I can direct you if I need to, but I can't handhold you."

Caelia hadn't waited for the beastfolk to answer her question before she'd started moving through the crowd. Curiosity drew her forwards, and she was able to use her small frame to her advantage as she darted in and out between people fleeing in the opposite direction. She'd only just broken free of the main crowd when that same beastfolk from before appeared at her side, grabbing her wrist and all but dragging her towards the chaos.

Well, it was a good thing she was going that way anyways.

She followed the stranger towards the mess, eyes widening slightly as they got closer. There was blood everywhere. The sounds of the injured and dying echoed in her ears, reminding her of the battle with the Kurungaar Mother not long ago. This was a safe zone though, wasn't it?

Then again, was anywhere in this game really safe for anyone?

Medical experience? Um, not really, but I'm a quick learner. I can do some things that might be able to help, but, um, I don't know if they would want that kind of help...

She glanced around at the immediate scene, wringing her hands together nervously. I could help them, probably, but Kaede warned me about using taboo magic around Landers... What if they just freak out more because I'm trying to help?

She looked back at the fox beastfolk, shaking herself out of her reverie.

Just point me in the direction you need, and I'll do my best to help!

She'd barely heard the response of the other, her mind already moving onwards to the task at hand. There were so many injured; so many who needed attention. We need to begin triage. Find those who truly need medical attention first, then move on to those who can wait. There's so many...

She glanced at a passing attendant - signified by the bracelet they wore upon their wrist - grabbing them as they tried to pass and looking them in their eyes. Shock, although minor. Enough that they were still able to recognise Kyra and what was going on. Good. They'll likely comprehend then.

"Go find the other medical staff. Set emergency precedence. We need to focus on clearing the area. Prep alternate beds, prepare for full scale relocation. Go."

Turning, she grabbed the Faerin's wrist again, breaking their attention away from the carnage before them. She waited until they were paying attention to her, before speaking.

"Stay beside me. I move, you move. I direct you to do something, you do it. If you don't know how to do something, state it. Don't try screwing around, it'll cost someone their life. Let's go."

She didn't wait for a response, moving to the first individual who still showed signs of life. Slowly, she began checking vitals, searching for any signs of damage or injury. She muttered as she worked, listing off possible problems, before shaking her head.

"Spine broke. Possible internal bleeding. Move to the next."

She quickly turned, beginning to look over the next individual. The amount of blood was more than she could imagine, but she could easily see the stomach wound it was leaking from. She gave it a single glance, before nodding at it.

"Gauze. Apply pressure. Hold it until I say otherwise."

She waited for the other to comply, before beginning her healing spell, reaching out with her own soul's essence and causing the wounds to slowly stitch together. She felt the drain immediately, the wear on her far more than she could've imagined. And there's still so many more...

Caelia hadn't hung around for the aftermath of the Kurungaar Mother fight. She hadn't seen the carnage that had been wrought. Now, standing here, she saw carnage. She should have been aghast, right? She should have been shocked. To be fair, she was shocked, a little bit, but the usual symptoms of shock were being overridden by her sense of curiosity instead.

What if I could help these people in my own way... Just have to figure out how to do it without them really knowing what I'm doing.

She turned her head as the beastfolk player grabbed her arm again, nodding to show that she'd heard what she was being instructed to do. She followed the other player like a shadow, hovering over her shoulder until she was directed to help. She briefly glanced back at the Lander they had moved on from, a frown on her face, but this player seemed to know better medically than she did.

If they weren't going to make it, no point in trying to help, right?

Right, gauze, got it.

She did as instructed, kneeling beside the injured individual to watch as the beastfolk started a spell. She could see some of the injury stitching itself back together, slowly but surely. Looking up, she clocked that the beastfolk player seemed to look tired as she worked.

Can I...help you at all? I don't have healing magic like you do, but, um, I have something... I just don't know if the Landers will want my help. It's... (whispered) technically taboo magic.

Her ears twitched, and for a moment she studied the other individual, trying to wrap her mind around what sort of taboo magic could possible be so concerning, but could also help people. She stared for far longer than she meant to, before snapping her attention back to the work at hand.

"Taboo magic? Like...dark magic? I...can it help people?"

Her eyes returned to the Faerin at her final question, a serious look on her face. She'd paused in her movement, hovering in her rise from the individual she'd just saved. She knew she needed to move on, but there was something here that may change how she handled the triage process.

People here need help. That's all that matters...if this person can give that help...it might be worth it. She moved to the next individual, waiting for the other to respond. She ran her hands over them, her eyes shifting between the individual beneath her, and the Faerin, wondering what the best route was to take here.

"...broken ribs, no internal bleeding...possible concussion...Mark this one with a pink ribbon."

She continued working as she tought on the situation, determined to clear as many as she could before giving any sort of concrete direction.

Caelia shook her head slightly when the beastfolk asked if she meant dark magic exactly. Feeling the other's gaze on her was a bit intimidating, but she'd put herself in this position... Might as well stick through it now.

It's not dark magic. It's hemomancy. I can help with their blood, I... I think so, anyways...

She hurried to follow the other woman towards the next patient, snagging a pink ribbon from a passing assistant and tying it off on their wrist.

I won't do anything if you think it's not worth it, you seem to know what you're doing here. I just thought I would offer to help, whatever you did earlier looked like it made you a bit tired, and so I imagine you can only do that so many times? I might be able to do more if I'm careful.

She'd never tried to use hemomancy to heal before, but surely it was doable. She could at least...put the blood back where it belonged, right?

Hemomancy. She'd taken her own levels in it, using it for a collection of different occurrences. Not once had it occurred to her that such a magic could be problematic. Sure, it could be used in dark ways, but when used for good...?

She glanced around, making sure that no one else was around. She leaned in close to the Faerin, giving them a stern look before replying, her voice barely a whisper.

"If you think you can help anyone, I don't care if you use dark magic, hemomancy, whatever. Fix them. Anyone gives you trouble, send them to me."

She leaned back, before nodding at the Faerin, waving a hand towards the person beside her. She was just about to head back to working on the patient in front of her when another thought occurred to her, one that she figured was likely very important.

"Have you...ever used it before to heal another? Or done any sort of healing, at all?"

She cursed herself internally for not asking that first - it was a vital step. She could see how hemomancy could be useful, in many cases for helping someone. But a wrongly flowed blood vessel, and you could kill nearly as quickly as help.

The Faerin looked a bit sheepish as the beastfolk turned back to her and suddenly ask if she'd done any sort of healing at all. A faint blush came to her cheeks, and she looked away briefly. Well, that was certainly the question of the hour, wasn't it?

Um, well, no, but I'm willing to try! It's magic, it can't be that difficult...right? I can just, um, not do it, though, if you think that would be better.

She glanced around at the injured still laying around them, watching Landers flit about between each person and tie off ribbons to those who needed treatment later. It was just magic, surely it wasn't that difficult to use to put someone back together, right? She studied a little bit of how to use hemomancy in a more offensive or defensive capability, so why couldn't she try to use it in a support sense, too?

That was totally how this could work, right? With a game like this, with so much open to interpretation, surely she could flavor this as support and help people.

Or I can just keep following you and what you need done, that's helpful, too. (nervous laugh) I've already wasted enough of your time, I'm sorry.

She'd just turned away with a nod, when she suddenly froze in place, the words of the Faerin sinking into her mind completely. Just magic. She spun, with an immediacy that spoke to her sudden realisation and concern, rounding on the Faerin and glaring at them with a look that was much harder than she'd meant it to be.

She'd just opened her mouth when the other individual suggested just continuing to follow Kyra further, and apologising for taking up her time. She felt her expression soften at the words, and she shook her head.

"No. It's fine. Your help has been excellent. If I'm being entirely honest...it might be best for you to stick around. That way I can keep an eye on you...and out for you...and I can guide you. Using magic can be...well, easy, sometimes. But when it comes to healing...well, you could quickly make a very, very grave mistake with hemomancy."

She glanced down at the individual they had just shifted to. The person was bleeding from numerous lacertaions - two of which were vital veins. She knew the person would die shortly if they weren't helped, but the exhaustion of splitting her own essence had finally caught up. She glanced at the Faerin, making her decision quickly.

"We'll...practice, on this person. I'm going to guide you on what to do...just...follow my directions as best as you can...once you begin, you'll have to work quickly...and any mistakes can...well, we'll come to that if it occurs."

She glanced over the injured person again, spotting the largest of the wounds. She brought the Faerin's attention to the laceration - a cut nearly six centimetres across, and several milimetres deep, located on their inner thigh. The artery that had been hit was leaking blood at an alarming rate, and Kyra knew it needed to be stopped first.

"Here...focus on the flow...you need to stop it. Find a way to make it clot, and close in on itself...and sense whether the flow then backs up. If it begins heading back up the artery itself, it could overflow the heart...or worse...but first, just try and use the blood to close itself..."

Caelia swallowed heavily as the beastfolk said she could make a grave mistake rather easily if she weren't careful. The Landers deserved to live, of course, so she didn't want to mess up and cause one of them to perish...but at the same time, she couldn't help but feel like the situation wasn't as grave as the beastfolk was making it out to be.

They were part of a game, after all. The Landers weren't...real, she supposed.

She kept that thought to herself.

Right, okay...

She knelt beside the injured Lander, closing her eyes for a moment and focusing on the pull of their blood within the body. A red mist started to gather around her hands as she focused, her eyes remaining closed. In her mind's eye, she could start to see the intricate pathways of veins and arteries. She could feel them working, moving the blood she wanted to stop towards the severed artery.

Just a little bit should do the trick...

Caelia opened her eyes for a moment, reaching down under her coattails to where she kept a dagger sheathed at her thigh. She removed it and sliced her own thumb without a word, letting her own blood power the spell she was using to fix this person.

Closing her eyes again, she focused. That red mist gathered around her hands before she placed them over the wound. Her brows furrowed together as she focused on the task at hand, coaxing the blood she could feel flowing out to instead stop and coagulate. Slowly, she could feel the leaking subside, and rather than backing up into the artery, the blood began to flow smoothly down the correct path once more.

She opened her eyes after a few moments, looking down at her now bloodied hands as they hovered over the injured portion of this person. She couldn't sew up the skin quite like the beastfolk with her had been able to, but the immediate bleeding seemed to have stopped.

I think I got it. It doesn't feel like it's flowing back the wrong way, it feels right. Does it look right?

She'd tensed at the sound of the blade leaving the sheath, readying herself should things suddenly turn sour. She hadn't gained the dangerous feeling from the Faerin, but one could never be entirely sure - could they?

She watched as the Faerin took the blade, slicing a cut on their own hand, in order to power the spell further. Kyra watched, waiting tensely, as the work was continued. Slowly, the wound closed, the blood clotting it as the Faerin knotted it all together.

The question brought a nod from Kyra, as she reached out with her own sense, trying to feel the flow of the blood. Nothing seemed to be backing up, nothing appeared to be clotting improperly, or causing any further damage. She opened her eyes, smiling at the other. Not perfect, but extremely well done. They have potential, should they ever want to...

"It seems fine. The clotting is holding the blood in line, pushing it down the right pathway. There's still a few more here, think you can handle doing it a couple more times? I'm right here if you need me to jump in...I can do a bit more, I think..."

She knew she was pushing herself - she'd already used so much of her own soul today, healing throughout the morning. If she wasn't careful...well, that wouldn't matter. She glanced at the right forearm, noticing the laceration that had knicked the artery just above the wrist. This one wasn't nearly as wide, or deep as the first, but it was certainly still life threatening.

"If you can close off this one, I think I can deal with the rest through more...mundane means."

She pulled out a few sparse bandages that she had in her bag, collecting her sewing needle, and sinew in order to begin working on a few of the others. She gave one final look at the Faerin, before starting her work on some of the lesser wounds.

"My name is Kyra, by the way...I'm one of the...err....Starcalled?...who work here, every so often..."

Even though it was minor in the grand scheme of things, the praise from the other woman had Caelia smiling ever so slightly. It wasn't even that much praise, not really, but she'd take what she could get. She shifted her focus as the beastfolk pointed out another wound, her eyes closing once more. She didn't need to cut herself again, as the injury to her thumb was still bleeding on its own. She focused on that sensation of flow and controlling it once more, coaxing the blood to flow inwards instead of out.

Oh, nice to meet you, Kyra. I'm called Caelia. I've never actually been out here before, I didn't even know it was here really... Still trying to explore all the little parts of the world as I can.

She spoke with her eyes closed, allowing most of her focus to be on the task at hand until it was complete. She smiled a bit once she was certain it was done, opening her eyes to look over at Kyra and watch her for a few moments as she worked.

You seem to know a lot about this kind of stuff. Are you studying medicine in the real world? Or just happened to get good at it on the fly?

Her tone was curious, mostly distracting her from the carnage that was wrought around her. She seemed more focused on Kyra now and whatever she was doing. She wiped her hands on her trousers to clear them of some of the crimson that now stained them.

The gauze slipped, ever so slightly beneath her hand. Yet another sign of her exhaustion. She cursed herself silently, as she listened to the other. Wanting to explore the world. Kyra had found herself here, and...well, that was now where she'd spent most of her time. It seemed silly, when she thought about it, but somehow it had never felt like a waste of her time.

"Err, not really. I'm a social worker in real life...so this is a bit outside of my area of expertise. I've always been a healer in games though, and this isn't my first VR, so I guess I picked it up pretty quickly. Although this is...far more intensive than anything else..."

She gave a heavy breath, trying to push aside her tiredness. There was still so much more to do, but a small collection of other medical professionals had started to arrive. Kyra hoped none of them looked closely at what her newfound companion was doing, but she figured most would simply be too busy with their own triage. She gave a curt nod towards another medical professional she'd recognised, an Elf by the name of Darish, or Darneel...she couldn't quite remember. The Elf gave a return nod, before turning to his own patient.

"I...spend a lot of my time here, actually...I've been around Falderen a bit...or, well, I've been through Eastern Brisshal and Lyrwick...but not much beyond that. I...guess I kind of found my calling here, a bit?"

She sat back as she finished the final gauze pad, tying it just enough to keep it in place. She gave a glance at the wound that Caelia had been working on, nodding in approval as she saw it closing over nicely. Once the Faerin was done, she rolled over to the next patient, her rest over as she set to work looking over the next individual.

A laceration across the jugular...the pool of blood already speaking to how much had been lost. She raised sorrow-filled eyes at Caelia, shaking her head slightly. There was no hope for this one, all they could do was easy the pain.

"So much death, and for what..."

Caelia looked up briefly as Kyra nodded to a passing Elf, only making eye contact with him for a moment before he was moving on. Thankfully, no one seemed particularly interested in what they were doing here, at least not yet. She listened as Kyra explained a bit of what she did in the real world, and what she'd been doing in the game.

There's so much to see, don't you want to get out and see it? I still haven't seen all the major cities, and the ones I have seen are beautiful and unique... You don't have to stay here around all of... (gestures vaguely) this.

She looked down at the next Lander that was injured, frowning slightly as she glanced at Kyra to see what she seemed to think about it. She wasn't rushing to cure them, and that shake of her head said it all. Too far gone, it would seem.

You put a lot of emotion into them, don't you? Doesn't it exhaust you? They're just part of the game, you could just as easily do something else... I guess not everyone sees them that way, though. I've been told they're much more unique than I give them credit for. It's just strange to me, I guess, to think of them as more than NPCs...

She took a moment to sit back, resting on the heels of her feet as she stared at the Faerin. They were right, of course. There was so much to see in this world, beyond just the encampment and what she'd come across thus far. Yet, here she'd stayed.

"I know there's a lot out there...it's just that, here, I find purpose. People to constantly help, who need medical attention. Who I can save, sometimes. And with the three deaths thing, well..."

She gestured to the indiviudal in front of them, the one she had just marked for death. Her eyes refused to look down at the figure, her heart tight in her chest as she considered what she was about to say.

"In this game...we have no idea who is Starcalled, and who is a Lander. There's no identifier, no concepts, unless you ask someone and they answer you honestly. The person you just saved could be a Lander, and this one a Starcalled, on their final death. How would we know, if we couldn't speak to them? But, to me at least, more importantly - who cares? Sure, one is a [i/]real[/i] person, in the sense that they come from the real world...but does that make them any more real than the Landers? Do the Landers not have hopes, and dreams? Expectations, and wishes? Does this world feel any less real, to you?"

She waved a hand around her, as if drawing the other's attention to the carnage that surrounded them. The other medical teams moved through the bloodbath, looking for those who could be helped, or taking a moment to give comfort to those who couldn't, before moving on. Everything about it spoke to scenes Kyra had seen in the real world; the compassion, the helpfulness, the horror.

"Is this truly any less real than the world we live in out there? Take away the magic, take away the fantastical aspects...and what are you left with?"

Caelia's gaze lingered on the individual that they were not helping as Kyra spoke to her. There was a somber expression in her gaze. She knew, deep down, that what the other woman was saying was right. The world here felt so real, it was real to the Landers. She had no clue who was what unless they identified themselves as Traveler or Lander. She sighed softly, closing her eyes for a moment before looking over to Kyra with a slight, albeit sad smile.

I know you're right. I just... I guess I try not to see it as real as it actually feels. If I keep myself somewhat dissociated from it, somewhat above it all, I won't...

She paused, stopping herself mid sentence and choosing not to finish the thought.

That if she really put stock into the world, into its people, she wouldn't want to leave. Three deaths and you were stuck in the game forever, but to someone like Caelia...

Well, someone like Maggie, that didn't sound quite so bad. She wasn't speedrunning her way to being stuck here, either, but she wasn't exactly as afraid of it as she could have been.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you, if I did. You're right. They're real, at least to this world. It's just...easier sometimes to keep myself distant from them. Separate.

She nodded as the other spoke, telling their side of things. How they kept themselves disassociated from the game's reality in order to maintain some sort of disconnection with it all. Perhaps to keep themselves from the shock of their actions, or the mental abuse that could come from such a realistic system. She knew of some - herself included - who had found the gruesomeness of the system itself hard on their mental state, if only for a time.

"It's...fine. A lot of people don't want to associate with what this world could be...what it is in many ways...I understand why they do it - why you might do it. And I don't think ill of you for it! I just...I can't do that, myself. Especially if...one day I'm truly a part of this world..."

She let the rest of the sentence hang in the air, before shaking herself. There were still more people who needed help, and sitting her chatting wasn't getting them any healthier. In fact, for some, it was having the entirely opposite effect.

"That's why I spend so much time here, though. Because...I don't know who is Starcalled, and who is Lander. Half of these people could be Starcalled on their final death...and if I can prevent that, well...it's worth it to me."

She'd continued speaking as she moved on to the next individual, pointing out where the left hand had been severed. There was no putting it back, but Caelia could at least stop the bloodflow. She glanced at the next individual, seeing the laceration on their throat, close enough to have knicked the jugular.

Closing her eyes, she went to work on the wound, letting the energy flow from herself and into the other. Her mind wandered slightly - not enough to effect the spell - but enough that she considered the words of the other, the possibility of travelling afar, beyond the encampment.

Thankfully it seemed she hadn't upset the beastfolk, at least not in a way she was showing. Caelia didn't waste time wondering what Kyra might truly be thinking. It was just better to take things as they were on the surface sometimes and not worry what could be underneath. She'd just get herself all worked up over nothing if she did that, anyways. She followed Kyra around to the next patient, kneeling and sighing quietly. Dissociating from this world helped to keep her distracted, especially in moments like this, as she stared down at someone's severed limb.

It wasn't real. If she just kept telling herself that, it would be true, right?

There's others to help while you might be gone, though. What's the point in playing this game if you're just gonna sit in one spot all the time? I get wanting to help, I really do, but what it someone needs help in another part of the world? You could easily be a traveling healer as much as you're a stagnant one now. I met a player stuck in the game, she runs a clinic or something, but even she travels around too.

This one was harder to fix, and Caelia fell silent as she focused on it. I could use a little help with this one, she thought, reaching out to whatever it was that had assisted her back during the Kurungaar fight.

She received no answer for now, though.

Sighing, she returned all of her focus to the injury. It was going slower this time, but still, it was steadily clotting and at least stitching together enough that the blood would no longer flow.
