Personality
Those that know Natalie in real life would laugh if they were told Akiva was her character.
While he is loud-mouthed, irresponsible, and carefree, she is quiet, uptight, and afraid to take risks. His whims change with the wind. He's beholden to nothing. One day, he might be inking yet another tattoo for a client, bright blue magic sparkling in his ink receptacle — but instead of the skull and bones that is requested, it's a golden retreiver.
There are so many pleasures in this life to be experienced, like drink and violence and love. And there is no time to waste.
For her, Terrasphere is an outlet, a way to let go, and so Akira is everything she wishes she was.
Positive: Gregarious, artistic, vivacious, confident, playful
Negative: Hedonistic, careless, impulsive, naive, boisterious
Background
Their voices echo in her head, even when they aren't there.
As she stifles a yawn, the moon peeking through her office window, she can hear her mother speaking. Don't stay up too late, she says, and even her imaginary voice grates on Natalie's nerves. It's bad for your brain. Your grandmother had dementia. You need to get enough sleep.
She spares a moment to look out of the window to stare up at the twinkling stars. Her home is just a few blocks from here; she can even see the apartment building, her bed calling her name.
Natalie yawns again and once more, reluctantly faces the too-bright white screen in front of her. One more hour, and this case will be finished.
When she pulls into the drive-through of McDonald's, it's her father she hears now. His gruff voice rings out, Eat healthy. You don't want to get fat. I have high blood pressure and cholesterol, and your granddad had diabetes. You have to make homecooked meals every day.
For some twisted petty revenge, she orders a Quarter Pounder, extra-large fries, and a McFlurry. She eats it in the parking lot, sucking on her fingers as ice cream drips down the side of the flimsy cup. The stars still shining brightly above, visible through the sky roof of her car.
Just for a second, she closes her eyes.
Her eyes sting. She tries to pretend that there's something in her eye — an eyelash, maybe — and definitely not tears. It's not as if she chose this life for herself.
Her fingers brush the collar of her shirt then inch under it, brushing the ink she knew was just to the right of her clavicle. A ring of six small flowers, geraniums, bright pink in their splendor, connected by dark green leaves. Folly, stupidity, they meant.
Half of them looked like misshapen magenta circles, but she had done them herself.
You are the oldest, her parents' voices ring inside her head. You need to be responsible and hard-working and smart. Who else is going to take care of us when we are old?
Natalie stares at her briefcase. Her hands curl into fists, her fingernails digging painfully into soft palms.
The tears start to fall, as they do so often these days.
It's not fair; she didn't choose this life. She never wanted to be a lawyer.
That was her dad's dream.
It's not the tiny QR code stuck on a pole in the McDonald's parking lot that catches her attention, but rather, the part of the sticker that says in big bold letters, Start a new life!
So she does. It couldn't hurt...right?
