Open Providence Aerial Bridge Defense

Longfall Bridges, Late Afternoon. Regan stood crossed arms looking up at the sky.

"WELL, WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY?"

"Typically they attack at dusk."

"SO I'M JUST SUPPOSED TO WAIT?!"

With a groan, Regan dismissed the man. Traveling the providence area, Regan had heard that manpower was needed to defend Landers traveling the area from flying beasts. Apparently, the number of beasts in the area had been extraordinarily high this season and so help had been requested with the promise of a reward. For Regan, the reward was of little import. The only thing that really mattered was testing her mettle against the flying beasts of the area.

"I CAME ALL THE WAY OUT HERE TO CHALLENGE FLYING MONSTERS AND I ENDED UP GETTING HERE TO EARLY! UGH... What the hell am I going to do while I wait?"

Impatient as usual, Regan looked at the people crossing the bridge. Travelers, merchants, families, and people from all walks of life could be seen. It made sense why the bridges were so important.

"I wonder if any of these people came to fight monsters too. HEY! ANY OF YOU HERE TO FIGHT THESE FLYING BEASTS OR IS IT JUST ME?!"

"NOPE! I'M HERE TO FLYING BEAST WATCH AND FIGURE OUT WHY YOU'RE SCARING THEM ALL OFF BY YELLING THOUGH!"

A playful grin plastered itself across the lepus' face as he responded in kind with equally voluminous voice. Though not his original intent to antagonize the woman (the initial being to probe into Divinus to explore), he'd find the temptation too great to resist. After drawing equal amounts of attention to himself with such a ridiculous response, a lone, carefree hand rose in the air to wave down his fellow beastfolk.

Hopping off the rock from which he had perched upon, Ru ambled over at a leisurely pace before stopping a few steps away from Regan. A hand rested above his eyes while scanning their surroundings from left to right, then back once more. With the horizon still clear, he'd shrug once while letting out a fake sigh of disappointment.

"Seriously though, where are they? You didn't get the wrong place... did you?..."

A look of skepticism was made, doubting the accuracy of her information.

"I came here to trailblaze, but I could use a warmup beforehand. Mind if I tag along?"

Trying to come up with a better set of random symbols on this awful banner.

"WHY ARE WE ALL YELLING?!"

Ayna had heard about the flying beasts from a bandit she accosted in a seedy tavern in Lyrwick, her home away from home. Not a home sweet home, though. That place was barely home for anyone. Prior to the tragedy that befell it, it had been much better, perhaps even less crime-ridden. These days, however, that place would be lucky if a flying beast tried to put it out of its misery. Harsh but fair.

She had been zooming around the place when she heard a couple of people yelling. Ayna figured they were pretty important people to be yelling that loud without a care in the world. They looked pretty interesting, too. The woman was somewhat attractive and the man...was a bunny? Hey, I know this guy!

"...Ru? What are you doing here? Is Tris here, too?"

Regan turned to the newcomer.

"If I'm scaring them off just by shouting, THEN I'M STILL DOING MY JOB!

Groaning, Regan turned back towards the sky and shouted.

"ARE YOU REALLY THAT SCARED OF JUST MY VOICE YOU PATHETIC SHIT BIRDS!"

Regan turned back to Ru.

"See, look at that, mission accomplished. So far so damn boring... I'm guessing you're here for more or less the same reason as I am, huh? Well, if you want to help knock yourself out. As you can see there's not much to swing at right now but air."

Another voice joined in the shouting chorus. Cupping her hands, Regan shouted to Ayna.

"I'M YELLING BECAUSE I CAME HERE TO FIGHT AND THERE'S NOT A DAMN THING HERE!"

Waiting for the third to approach, Regan sighed despondently.

"You here for the same reason too? To fight all of these invisible flying monsters before us?"

Regan pointed to the air mockingly.

"Look at them all swirling and snapping. Whoever said this place needed help was full of shit."

"They are coming..."

There was another person on the Longfall Bridges. She was far enough away, not approaching that it had been easy to assume that she had been here for reasons unrelated. The girl had just been standing there on the edge, a piece of steel shaped like a stick planted in the ground between her palms, as she stared out into the distance like some kind of person who had deep thoughts.

Now she was saying ominous one liners, too. Was she just standing out here to look cool or something? Why did she stare out into the distance, and why did she sound so confident that something was coming for them..?

In truth, it was because she was practicing her voice acting. Nobody else on the bridge needed to know that, though. Hopefully something real would come by soon to prove her right so that she wouldn't look like a fool in front of the other people on the bridge...

More than content to simply humor his voluminous companion, Ru slowly nodded with understanding.

"I see, I see. Smart thinking! Why wait for disaster when we can avoid it. But… do you still get paid if nothing appears? Wait—are you getting paid?..."

Though initially under the impression that the stalwart blonde wanted to fight for the sake of fighting, their exchange of words revealed more regarding her character. Or so the lepus thought until she continued blabbering on about the thrills of combat. It appeared as though her noble act was simply a façade thinly veiling battle mania.

It was then that a familiar face appeared, an utmost welcome sight.

"Ayna! How ya doing Foxy?"

A cheery wave was made towards the lavender femme as she made her way over.

"I don't know about Tris… but I came here to chart out the mountains and heard some yelling, so here I am! Speaking of Tris, did she ever accept your friend request? Mine's still pending…"

The tips of his bunny ears flopped ever so slightly upon remembering the lone, pending notice still sitting on his friend list. Not one to linger too long over things beyond his control however, Ru perked up after a moment's hesitation, walking over to hug the familiar face. His gaze however was fixated on a young girl off in the distance as he watched with skepticism. Her muttering hushed, the gaunt lepis' elongated ears had barely managed to pick up soft whispers on the wind.

"Hey uhh… do either of you know her?"

He'd point towards the unidentified lass.

"She said something's coming but the skies look clear? Is this what they call chuuni?"

"Paid? Who gives a shit about that? I just wanted to kill something that flies. It's good practice for aerial combat situations. I thought my yelling would attract them. I guess not."

It appeared that the woman that had joined the group was a friend Ru Ning, the rabbit man that Regan had run into a few times though either still hadn't picked up his name or really hadn't tried to remember it. As Regan listened to the pair talk, a third voice would split through the commotion as a semi-despondent-looking Magia would claim that something was coming.

Rushing to the Magia's side, Regan would look around wildly.

"WHERE?! WHERE ARE THEY! DID THEY FINALLY HEAR MY YELLING AND TAUNTING AND GET THEIR SHIT TOGETHER TO COME FIGHT?!"

As Regan looked around, she saw nothing. Her face fell and she looked back at the Magia.

"You're lucky you're adorable. If you weren't I'd be very angry with you, little one."

Suddenly, a strange wind blew through Regan's hair. Looking up to the sky, Regan frowned.

"I don't like this wind."

Suddenly from above, hidden from sight by a cloud the creatures were using to mask their approach, a swarm of flying beasts began to swoop down. It appeared the Magia was right, they had indeed been coming.

Regan readied her blades with a ferocious smile.

"LOOKS LIKE WE'RE GOING TO GET TO HAVE SOME FUN AFTER ALL! HAH!"

Let's see if this banner thing sticks.

Ayna grinned at Ru's response, welcoming the idea of a reunion. She wasn't much of a social person outside of this game, but here, since she could be someone else, she felt much better having familiar faces she could reunite with. The Bunny Man was one of those faces, and he seemed like a good enough acquaintance to consider being an actual friend. Problem was, would Ayna be a good friend? She wasn't quite sure of that, but still, she tried to reach out.

"Doing good, doing good! Hmm? (She tried to check her friends list and squinted at the realization.) I guess not...yet. Maybe she's busy?"

Ayna took a moment to absorb Regan's explanation, looking at it through as many lenses as she could. To be fair, it was a way to get their quarry's attention. Perhaps not the best or safest way but it was a way. Not a bad thing, just being direct with these things. What's the worst that could happen? It's just a game, after all.

"Oh. Well, that's fair, I guess. (She then turns to the sky and starts yelling as well.) SHOW YOUR STUPID FACES, YOU STUPID BIRD MONSTERS WITH YOUR STUPID BIRD BRAINS AND STUPID BIRD WINGS AND BIRD BEAKS!"

Raising an eyebrow, Ayna just stared at the newcomer. She wasn't too into the idea of omens and feelings, especially the ones involving the gut, which could just be indigestion, and all that junk about unscientific things she barely understood. But she was very into the idea of fighting things. With a gleeful, almost maniacal laugh of her own, she brandished Calamity's Light, her polearm weapon, and prepared to do just that: fight things.

"OHOHO! Now you're talking my language! Just need them to come closer... COME CLOSER, YOU DELICIOUS CHICKENS! MIGHT NOT HAVE A CUP OF RICE BUT...LET'S GO!!!"

Ha! God Breaker had known that she was right all along-she had definitely not been praying for something to happen just a minute ago! And she finally got to use the line she had been saving up until this very moment, to boot.m.

"Hmph... So you've finally come, angels. I'll have you fall today!" She cries, flourishing the hunk of steel that she called IMAGINE EDGE today. Depending on how it performed, God Breaker thought, she may end up looking for a new hunk instead. For now, she placed her faith in her own hands. Taking aim and strength of arm, she swung the steel in a flash. And as if imagined by the girl, the steel flew, growing long and slinky as a quicksilver whip that lashed at the sky..!

It missed the beasts by a feather's end and plummeted into the chasm below. A panicking God Breaker tried to pull back on her end of the stick in effort to get the length to come back to the hilt... was she trying to reel it like a fishing rod? Was that going to even work when there was no mechanism for that?

Regan looked to @God Breaker Master X for a moment unsure of what she was doing.

"Little one, I don't wish to be rude, but you're supposed to hit them. Even so, I will protect you so take your time."

Regan looked back up at the swarming monsters. Grinning she took flight, her wings unfurling like a nightmare.

"TOOK YOU BOYS LONG ENOUGH! HAHAHA, I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE OF WAITING!"

Reaching the pack Regan summoned her soul-sworn blade, Carmilla.

"LET'S SEE HOW MANY I CAN TAKE DOWN IN ONE BLOW!"

Holding the liquid blade low as if she were placing it in a scabbard, Regan slashed upward sending a wave of blood towards the enemies cutting through several of them. As the severed creatures fell, Regan made use of their blood. Holding out her hand, the blood of the now dead creatures pooled into her palm.

"HAHAHA! IS THIS IT?! I'LL TAKE ALL OF YOU MYSELF!"

Tossing the large globule of blood above her, the orb formed into several arrows of blood and shot out impaling several more creatures. Tired of ranged fighting, Regan felt it was time to get in closer.

Rushing the nearest monster, Regan soared above it in an aerial maneuver, then closed her wings letting herself dive into the beast. Holding on to the creature from the back, Regan bit into its through with her fangs ripping out a chunk of flesh and drinking deep of the blood. Standing on the creature's back, Regan kicked it away as it plummeted down, once again unfurling her wings to look for a new target.

"I'LL KILL AND EAT EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU! HAHAHAHA!"

A look of concern was made as the lepis watched their entourage. Though the initial strike was rather comical, he found himself more worried at the mental state of the shouting woman. Was this still considered roleplaying or had she truly lost herself to the violence? It was a question he wasn't too invested in answering.

"Is it me?... Or does she seem a little…"

Ru raised a hand as lone finger spun around in circles at the side of his temple, indicating the how inane the scene presented before them was. Regardless of the situation however, one thing was clear. The creatures were not here for tea as amusing as that'd be. A sigh sounded from the lepis as he watched on, debating how to strike. Sure, it'd be easy to launch a long range assault, but something about the blonde woman's pizazz had inspired him to join in on the fray, up front and in person.

Raising a gaunt hand, he'd point at one of the descending creatures that had been struck down, an eerie blue light forming a tether between his finger and the fallen beast. Several magical pulses emitted from the connection as the creature's soul was drawn in, slowly but surely, vaporizing into a wispy smoke which the lepis deeply inhaled.

"Aaaah, that's the stuff…"

His eyes glowered with the same spectral blue hue of his magic as ethereal wings sprouted from his back, resembling the creatures presented before them. Crouching down slightly, the lepis vaulted into the air with wings flapping rhythmically to gain altitude. His arms sheathed in an inky silhouette resembling wraith like claws, Ru swiped decisively at the nearby beasts, passing through their bodies to disrupt their movement. The creatures would stagger, either crumpling to the ground unceremoniously or falling a great distance before regaining stability.

"Here comes a delivery care package, Ayna! You too shorty!"

The quiet words that came out of Regan's mouth appeared to affect the girl as if louder than any of her following war-cries. Her 'reeling' slowed for a moment, then ceased at comment of 'shorty'. The slinky rebar appeared to right itself in her hands even as she ceased to do whatever silly thing she had been doing to try and pull it in.

"Why, you..." She murmured underneath her breath. God Breaker wanted to talk back, but she couldn't. Was there even a point to? Something like that always resulted in a worse conversation. What use was it talking about how she felt when she couldn't even hit anything? She wasn't like this Regan girl. God Breaker couldn't slash the monsters out of the sky, not even if she copied the tense strength in her legs or the way that she flicked her forearm on the mid-swing to add shock to the whip...

Could she? It had worked for Regan. It seemed so simple when she did it.

What Regan saw from above was a stance eerily familiar to her own. Why did she recognize the way that God Breaker swung her rebar pipe? The answer could be found in what happened when she swung-Regan could finally see what her own technique looked like on the other end of the sword.

Was God Breaker going to hide like Sonya would?

No.

"I won't take those words. I'll show you rude..! IMAGINE--!"

It wasn't enough to cut through several of the beasts as the blood-sworn blade Carmilla had. It only clipped the wing of a sky-high beast and severed the side of one that had been dragged closer down to the bridge. God Breaker wasn't swinging Carmilla, but a simple piece of steel. How, then, had she made enough progress to go from clumsily flailing to imitating half of an otherworldly swing?

The horizon cracked for a moment's time. A silver streak mimicked the red flash that split the sky in two.

Going wild on these ducks with Twice Activated!

"READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!"

Ayna wasted no time in joining everyone else as soon as they started indiscriminately slaying the winged monsters. She didn't know what they were. Or why they were attacking this place. All she knew was they needed to be exterminated. And fast. Ohoho, I can do fast! It was good enough for her. What else was there to mull over? It was just a game, after all.

❰ Crowfeather Thunderbolt Callspell ❱

In a flash of purple lightning, Ayna vanished, only to reappear in another lightning flash, this time mid-air. She wasn't at the same height as @Ru Ning or maybe even @Regan but she was definitely up there. I still need to work on my teleportation. The creatures cared little about the difference, though, and around four of them headed straight for her, making their monstrous battle cries that only served to make the aspiring storm catcher laugh maniacally.

"THAT'S IT, GENTS! COME TO MOMMA!"

❰ Divine Change: Evil Eyes Open ❱

As soon as one of them got close enough, Ayna suddenly blipped out of existence, barely avoiding one of the flying creatures' attempt to chow down on her tinier frame. In a matter of seconds, more flashes of purple lightning erupted around the area where Ayna was, and the creatures within that very place started squealing in horror and pain. A frenzied Calamity's Light, Ayna's lightning-charged polearm, secured their doom, shocking them into unconsciousness and maybe even taking them down for good. If not, gravity would finish the job.

When her burst ended, Ayna found herself starting to freefall, though there was no fear on her face, only excitement. Once again, she disappeared in a lightning flash, only to reappear back on solid ground with @God Breaker Master X, just in time for Ru Ning's delivery. With glee, Ayna charged Calamity's Light with her lightning magic again and prepared for more action.

"HEY, BATTA BATTA BATTA! SWING, BATTA BATTA!"

❰ Divine Change: Source of Dreams ❱

Almost at the same time as X was doing their thing, Ayna launched herself upward, straight towards the falling creature, lightning-flashed further forward, and pierced their weakest point with Calamity's Light. The impact forced the creature back and away from her and X, and as Ayna landed back on the ground with another lightning flash, she couldn't help but scream cheerily.

"WOOHOO! THIS IS SO MUCH FUN!"

Bathed in blood, Regan swooped down to @God Breaker Master X

"SO YOU'RE TRYING TO STEAL MY ATTACKS?! GOOD! THAT'S SMART OF YOU! LEARN FROM THE BEST LITTLE ONE. EMULATE ME AND ONE DAY YOU MAY BE AS GOOD AS A SWORDSMAN AND AS POWERFUL AS ME! DO YOUR BEST, HAHAHA, SEIZE YOUR OWN FUTURE!"

Feeling as though she had given the weird but cute little Magia person a pep talk, Regan returned to the sky now seeing that both @Ayna Nietzsche and @Ru Ning had joined the battle.

"HAHAHA AND HERE I THOUGHT YOU TWO WERE USELESS! LOOK AT YOU GO! I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO FIGHT ALL OF THESE ON MY OWN WHILE YOU TWO WATCHED! STILL, I WON'T LET EITHER OF YOU BEAT MY KILL SCORE! HAHAHA!"

Charging up once again blades drawn, Regan sliced through two more creatures as dove through and around the enemy.

Despite the terrifying strength of their onslaught, wave upon wave of flying beasts surged forth, flooding constantly as if a broken dam. Realizing their initial opponents were a bit more than they could chew, the creatures sought out easier prey in their surroundings, opting for the helpless landers scattered about in the distance.

"Wait we're keeping score? Challenge accep-- Oh no… Protect the civilians!"

He'd cry out to the two closest to the ground as they were the nearest for action. (@Ayna Nietzsche @God Breaker Master X )

A look of panic flashed in Ru's eyes as he realized their goal. It made sense after thinking about it. Between the travelers, merchant caravans and families along the main road, why fight a band of blood crazed adventurers? Were the gaunt lepis in their shoes, he'd most likely opt for the same course of action.

Mana surging wildly as if to indicate his haste, an ethereal chain burst forth from an extended hand. It pierced through the first creature in its path. From there, it'd wrap from one to the next, resulting in an elongated shackle draped with beasts along the entire length as if ornaments on holiday tinsel. Though still alive, the avian beasts remained snared, struggling in vain as their immaterial restraints prevented further escape. Their numbers were too great however as an insignificant sum managed to slither past his grasp.

"We got runners! Incoming!!!"

With a heavy grunt, the gaunt lepus swung his arm across the horizon, sending the chain crashing into more of their kin. As if a macabre form of fireworks display, crimson blood splatterings bloomed across the horizon from the numerous high impact collisions.

"YOU'RE KEEPING SCORE RIGHT? HOW MANY WAS THAT???"

Fuck the civilians! Ayna's crazed grin never moved away from the sight of the monstrous avian creatures. The more she indulged in her barbaric displays of violent frenzy, it seemed the more she was losing herself. The boring engineer who spent hours at her desk and on-site, ignoring social cues and strapping herself to her work like it was some sort of rocket ship to the top, was nowhere to be found here, in this game, in this world. Instead, Ayna was someone else, something else, and this version of her was keen on taking out more of her quarry. Even at the expense of the innocent. They're just NPCs! Who cares?!

She was charging herself and Calamity's Light with more of her lightning magic again, prepared to take flight and annihilate more of their foes with her vengeful storm, when she caught a glimpse, out of the corner of her eye, of three of those said foes taking to a nearby caravan. What was it she thought about the civilians? Fuck them? Ohoho! They're coming to me, eh? Well, well, well... This is all too easy!

"ON IT, RU!"

❰ Divine Change: Source of Mystery ❱

A flash of lightning taking her place on the spot, on her point of origin, Ayna reappeared closer towards her target, charging recklessly at them with her weapon of choice. She managed to take out that same creature with a cruel thrust through its neck before overloading it with her lightning, forcing it to squeal and scream and spasm mid-air before it fell to the ground, its wings pushing aside parts of the caravan and one civilian, still squealing and spasming until it was no more.

Unfortunately, Ayna spent too much time savoring her victory that she had not noticed the two others turning to her with murderous intent until it was too late. In a swift and fluid motion, one of the creatures zoomed towards her, kicking her off the bridge. Recklessness had its price, and Ayna was way behind her debt. Fuuuuuuuuuck! This isn't over, you overgrown chicken sandwiches! I'LL RIP YOU APART AND EAT YOU WITH RICE!

God Breaker did her best to swing at the monsters in the sky. However, she was no practitioner in the art of Tsubame Gaeshi. She could not kill many, and could only watch as several flew away unscathed. Then she watched as the one falling, clipped by her blade, was falling straight at her--

WHAM!

She was thrown right off the bridge in face of the impact. She would have fell... However, she wasn't about to give up now-not after she had resolved herself. Once again she threw IMAGINE EDGE... not as an endless blade, but as a coiling whip instead.

Her efforts bore fruit. The whip grew taught and caught against the underside of the bridge. God Breaker swung beneath and flew past, heading straight towards the giant birds!
The tiny magia landed on one of their backs with a little bit of mid-air directing. She latched onto it as best she could, thanking her """God""" that she had crafted a net with which to latch onto the damn bird with before this outing. From there, she practiced the technique she had been given. No bird on the route to civilian life was safe-not with the legendary bird named God Breaker after them.

Even with the amount the group had slain, the number of the flying beasts seemed endless. Something had to be pushing all the creatures towards the bridge, there had to be a reason for these unprecedented numbers. If anyone in the group noticed, for the most part, the beasts were bypassing the bridge, it was almost like the majority of them came not to attack the civilians, but to run from something else.

Regan in her battle lust failed to notice this and continued on her bloody warpath.

"I AM PROTECTING THE CIVILIANS, BY KILLING ALL THE ENEMIES! HAHAHA!"

Opening her mouth, Regan expelled a stream of blood like a water hose at several of the monsters drenching them. Wiping her mouth on her forearm with a grin, Regan held out her hand.

"THEIR NUMBERS AREN'T EVEN DROPPING! WHERE DID THEY EVEN ALL COME FROM! HAHAHA, AND HERE I THOUGHT I'D HAVE NOTHING TO FIGHT TODAY! AFTER I CULL ALL OF THIS WINGED TRASH I'LL HAVE TO TRACK THEM BACK TO THEIR DEN SO I CAN KILL WHATEVER BIRTHED THEM! HAHAHA!"

Clenching her hand into a fist, the blood that covered the creatures hardened into spikes impaling them. Regan laughed as they fell lifeless. Laughing maniacally, Regan fought on.

"WHAT GREATER GIFT THAN MORE ENEMIES TO FELL?! HAHAHA!"

"Umm… hello?"

As enthusiastic as his companions were, the gaunt lepis found them to be perhaps a bit too delighted by the bloodshed? Initially screaming back as a joke, the others seemed to be more and more serious as time passed. Were they possessed by some demonic spirit? His eyes glowed blue ever so briefly, denying his suspicion and leaving Ru even more confused. If it wasn't some foreign entity clouding their minds… were they all really just battle crazed freaks? A cold shudder ran down his spine at the thought.

His eyes carefully dancing between his companions, a wide eyed look of alert formed upon his face as two were knocked off the bridge. Wings hugging tight to his body, the lepis dove down, racing against gravity in order to aid them. The younger of the two had managed to snag herself to safety, making his choice rather simple. Swooping beneath and past Ayna, his arms latched securely onto her person, holding on tight with great care to not drop her should she struggle. Both wings fanned out to glide back up to the bridge using the momentum of his descent.

"You good there Foxy? That seemed a bit… reckless. I know you got those mini jumps, but there's a limit to those, right?... I'd rather not have to start calling you Pancake instead."

Not as concerned with the beasts anymore, he'd take a moment to check in on his friend and perhaps try to clear her head a bit.

Caught like a smooth wet criminal.

One moment she was falling to her doom, the next she was up in the air again. Ayna wondered if her magic had somehow saved her, gaining sentience and taking over so as not to lose its host. Like that weird cape thing of that weird old magic man. Before she could go on an entire tangent, however, she quickly realized Ru had actually saved her. With wide grin, she gave him a thumbs up.

"Oh, hey man! How's it hanging? Nah, I'm fine! I just slipped, that's all. Now if you'll excuse me..."

With a nudge of her head, she gestured for the bunny man to drop him back on the bridge. There were still beasts to slay, and she didn't want the other Player to be left there all by themselves, oblivious to the fact that they too almost followed her off the bridge. She did wonder, though, if maybe there was a cause to all this, something they could target to turn off the assault, so to speak. Like a hivemind or whatever.

"The hot loud woman is right, though: These things seem limitless in number. You think there's something controlling them? Something we could go ka-boom to take them all out in one blow?"
