Surrounded. Her eyes glanced around the wooded area that encircled them, catching sight of movement in the trees as others slowly came into view. There were four more, armed with a variety of weapons from cudgels to a crossbow. Yume felt her face flush slightly as she realised they were in a bad position, the men slowly grinning as the realisation must have dawned on her face.

Watashi ga-chū ni haitte karera ni yameru yō ni iu koto ga dekiru to omotte, nante orokana kotodeshou. She chided herself silently, before realising something else - they all carried a variety of weapons, but each looked well-used and ever so slightly damaged. Brigands, to be sure, but not well-armed ones or ones who could do much more than look threatening.

She had limited experience in fighting - a few kendo lessons through her school, where she'd shown little promise, beyond basic skills, and a few years in aikido as ordered by her father - but even she could see that those around them were amateurs. Their stances were too wide, or too short, their entire frames leaning forwards in an almost eager way. Most importantly, though, Yume didn't see any sign of spellcasters.

It would appear that we are surrounded...which will make this much easier.

Her voice came out calm and controlled - just like her father had taught her. The men around them seemed to pause, as if confused by her sudden show of courage. It wasn't enough to stop them, or to turn them away, but that pause was all Yume needed, all she wanted.

I would offer them the chance to run...Shikashi...I don't think they'd take the offer. These lot appear to prefer to have themselves Shōkyaku shita.

She raised both her arms, holding her palms out once more before finishing her thought. It was meant to be a bluff, but she knew that if they didn't back off, she'd have to follow through with it. She tried to keep the distaste off her face, tried to remind herself why she was doing this. It was still hard, harder than she'd thought it would be.

As soon as you are ready, Magnolia-san.

She watched, waited, hoped. Two had begun to back off, inching slowly away, and Yume felt a single second of hope that they would turn and flee - choosing to pick a fight somewhere else. Her hope, however drained away as the broken-nosed man who had already been singed growled in anger, seemingly causing more fear in the brigands than Yume was able to do with all her words.

Ashurionbēru.

The shield surrounded Magnolia and herself as the brigands rushed forwards, the snapping of the crossbow a single second after the movement had begun. Yume closed her eyes as the bolt ricocheted off the shield and into the chest of one of the brigands, causing the man to falter back a few steps before collapsing.

With her eyes still closed, she could hear as the cudgel and scimitar of the final two still standing smacked into the shield, rebounding with an energy that pushed outwards, forcing the men to the ground as their balance failed them. At the same instant as they hit the ground, the shield fell, leave Magnolia and Yume unprotected once more.

"There are no more chances to anything, madam. It is kill or be killed." Magnolia said, looking at the approaching enemy before Yume's shimmering barrier blocked most of the incoming attacks, buying them the time necessary so they could prepare to engage with the most more numerous enemies- That thankfully, at least looked and sounded like inexperienced dumbasses.

When the shield fell, however, Magnolia once again neared Yume, using her pauldrons and her bracelets to deflect the incoming bolts, keeping her safe at the minor cost of acquiring a few more bruises to her body before she turned to the prone men that were already standing.

The cudgel wielder was the first to charge in, and Magnolia was quick to step ahead to become an obstacle between the brigand and her friend, thrusting her palm to swiftly push his wrist away while her free hand sank into her dress to pull a needle before she sank it deep into the brigand's left eye, twisting it to splatter it while he shrieked in pain, allowing Magnolia to disarm him while he was distracted and swirl to slam the cudgel behind his knee, with a loud snapping sound being a sign that his fibula was broken, forcing him onto the ground.

The brigand with the scimitar yelled as he swang his blade, hoping to catch Magnolia off-guard, and he somewhat did, as she only had time to use her bracelet to try to parry the attack, but it only made the blade slide across it and still cut her arm, making her wince before she counter attacked with a cudgel hit on his elbow, giving her space to grab his wrist and pull him closely, almost in a dance form before she suddenly spinned and twisted his hand, breaking its joint before she took his scimitar and shoved its pomel on his neck, damaging his throat enough for him to cough blood and desperately attempt to grasp air, only for Magnolia to use the cudgel once again, slamming it on his solar plexus, emptying his lungs and sending him to his knees.

Armed with a scimitar on a hand, and a cudgel on another, Magnolia opened her stance, covering Yume with her body while blood dripped from her wounded arm.

She could only hope that it had bought her companion time enough for her to cast another powerful spell to fight off the inumerous remaining enemies.

It all happened faster than Yume could have anticipated. It had gone from talks - she wouldn't call them peaceful, they were anything but - to three of the brigands lying dead on the ground around them. Ahead of her, the crossbowman had already reloaded his bolt and fired twice, the ammunition bouncing off Magnolia's body in a way that made Yume realise that the outfit wasn't just for show.

Content that Magnolia had the two behind them handled, Yume turned her attention back to the crossbowman - realising now that they had been joined by another two wielding similar looking, albeit slightly more worn, weapons. She raised her hands again, holding her palms outwards as she steadied her feet.

I tried...Gomen'nasai. Tentai bando!

A stream of translucent blue-white strips exploded from her left wrist, lashing through the air to wrap around the legs of the crossbowman. Yume gave a harsh tug as soon as they had enveloped the legs of their targets, causing the three to slip suddenly and tumble to the ground. Through inexperience or surprise, two of the set off their crossbows - the bolts slamming into each other and killing them far faster than Yume could have imagined. The third had been pointed at her, and Yume watched as the bolt seemed to slowly spin through the air towards her.

Ashurionbēru!

The shield snapped up in front of her again, redirecting the bolt away from her. She didn't wait, crossing the distance between herself and the crossbowman she slammed a foot into his head hard enough to knock the man unconscious.

Her eyes cast around her for a moment, before confirming that they were, at least for the time being, alone. Looking over at Magnolia, Yume nodded towards the one unconscious individual.

Help me tie this one up...I wish to leave him with a Keikoku messēji.

Magnolia was surprised, even if it didn't show on her face, that Yume actually went through the idea of getting some of these brigands killed... And so she did, enough to bring the threat down completely, leaving them with some breathing room and one last survivor, that Magnolia was ready to finish off if Yume didn't have the stomach to do it herself.

However, it wasn't only about not having the stomach for it, but rather it seemed like she had full intention of sparing the brigand.

"Do you plan to keep him alive, madam Yume?" Magnolia asked, but still released the weapons from her grip, so she could try to shuffle on the brigand's belongings, being certain she would find ropes on them. After all, these bastards probably took people as hostages all the time.

"Here." Magnolia said, tugging a couple meters of rope, that was more than enough to give the brigand a good and tight tie, locking his wrists together behind his back, and making sure he wouldn't have enough movement on his legs either, by keeping his legs glued on each other.

Magnolia was quick to react, grabbing the man and searching the bodies of the brigands to find anything that could be used to tie their captive in place. The pause that Magnolia seemed to have originally passed over Yume's notice, too caught up in the fact that they had just survived what would come to be Yume's second conflict in this world.

Magnolia's words brought Yume's attention back to the present, as she realised that the maid had questioned her intentions. At first, she was about to respond with a simple acknowledgement, but something in the way that Magnolia had stated that question, as well as her more rigid stance - barely noticeable, but there - made Yume pause and consider. She was new to this world, and wasn't quite sure if it was uncommon to do what she was planning. Still...

Alive...hai. I plan on sending him back to his...encampment with a message. Keikoku, that the village is to be left alone.

She wanted to help tie the bindings that Magnolia had started, but the maid was finished before Yume could even approach to offer her help. Glancing over the dead bodies, Yume felt a slight chill pass through her body as she realised that she had been the cause of such destruction and mayhem.

Much easier in a game...

Her brow furrowed at the thought, realising for the first time just how accurate that statement was. She'd never considered before how games let you do just about anything without consideration, even going so far as being the bad people.

Listening to Yume's idea, Magnolia chewed her cheek. "I understand. I disagree, however. Exterminating the enemy is more efficient than giving them a message they can choose to reject." Magnolia explained. "Death can't be rejected when it comes." She said

Magnolia turned to look at Yume, feeling obligated to feign confusion. "In a game?" She asked, then pulled the ropes, tightening its grip to a point it would probably bruise the man's flesh and skin, undoubtly it would be painful if he was conscious enough to feel it. But the maid seemed ruthless about it, letting the man aside before she stood and looked at Yume, with the typical deadpan expression remaining in her face, but her eyes... Were filled with a worried brim.

"Madam... This isn't a game." She said, knowing what Yume truly meant by her words, but acted as one would.

"Starcalled are told to be immortals. But I've seen and heard of some that were gone and never came back again... Even those called by the stars have a degree of mortality." Magnolia said.

"It is kill or be killed, madam Yume. And I will do the former to many before allowing the latter to happen to you." Magnolia was firm.

"However, I won't be next to you to ward you from harm forever, madam Yume. It worries me that, your gentleness and caring nature will be your doom."

Abrupt. It was the only way she could think to describe Magnolia's words - a sign of abruptness. Which wasn't to say that Yume didn't see the truth behind them, nor the fact that she disliked it. But it was to the point, and from a viewpoint that clearly came from experience - another thing that Yume didn't have in this world.

Wakarimashita. But you say that I am...gentle and caring? Perhaps...I do not wish to cause unnecessary violence, when some may be turned away from it. But...I will not hesitate to do...what is necessary. Tatoe iyade mo.

She waved a hand towards the corpses still splayed out across the ground, as if to signify what she had already done. She knew that there were dangers in this world - dangers which spread to her own life in the world beyond this one. But that didn't mean that she was going to let the game change her, to become anything less than what she already was.

Do you believe, Magnolia-san, that we can do dark things for the good of others? Perhaps, some can. But...I can't. I'm...caring, and gentle.

She smiled at the words, knowing that she was turning it back towards the other in a way. It fit her, perfectly, she found - it was what everyone in the real world had always told her. That she was too caring, too gentle, too easily manipulated by others. Tabun karera wa tadashīdesu. Shikashi, sore ga watashidesu.

Maybe you are correct in saying I should...not let them live. Maybe they will ignore my warning...but how will we know, if we don't let them try?

She looked at Magnolia fully, before finishing her thoughts. There was no hesitation in her words now, no wavering in her eyes.

And should they decide that they want to ignore me...Sore ga karera no saigo no ketteidearu koto o kakunin shimasu.

Magnolia remained with her gaze locked on Yume's.

"In a world where danger lays around at every corner, and that people lacks empathy, you are very gentle and kind, madam Yume. Your mercy shows it." Magnolia said, then slowly looking at the dead bodies of the brigands, making her shake her head in disapproval.

"They would never do the same. In fact, they would make you suffer a lot before actually killing you." She spoke, knowing how dirty and cruel these kind of bastards were. If anything, Yume's quick death was the least painful thing she could've done to them.

However, she didn't let this last any longer, taking a moment to crouch and take the tied man on her arms, and tossing him over her shoulder with a grunt.

"... But I fully understand, madam Yume. I will respect your choice, and continue to protect you until we are done with this mission." Magnolia reassured. "We may need some rest after all this stress, if you shall guide us to the right spot to keep him." Magnolia shook the man on her shoulder.

She couldn't argue. Didn't want to argue, even if she could. She knew that Magnolia was only telling her what she needed to hear - a hard truth that Yume would've preferred to have avoided. She didn't hold that realistic view that Magnolia had in any negative light, in fact she knew that there as a benefit to it, in some instances.

Arigatō.

The word was abrupt, but there was no unkindness to it. Yume knew that there would continue to be a disagreement to their points of view, and she didn't want to harm their friendship by continuing to argue pointlessly. She knew that Magnolia was only doing what she thought was right, as Yume herself was doing.

Leading Magnolia back towards the camp, Yume looked for a place to drop the individual. She still wasn't sure if the camp itself was empty, or if there were more individuals within the encampment itself. Either way, she wasn't willing to find out.

We'll drop him somewhere nearby, where they'll likely find him by the end of the day...we also need to wait until he wakes up so I can give him our message...and I may need some help with that, if you...don't mind...

She didn't like what she was about to ask, but she knew that she couldn't do it herself. An impression needed to be made, and while they were letting the man walk away alive this time, /name wanted them all to think that worse would be waiting.

I want to leave an...Inshō. Something that they won't ignore...alongside the message I want this man to carry.

She was being vague, and she knew it. But she couldn't bring herself to say what she had thought of, what she had considered doing. She knew there was a dark side to this world, but Yume also knew herself - and while she could let others go there, she herself could never take a step in that path. Watashi wa karera o mamoritai. Magnolia nodded briefly at the blunt grateful word. Perhaps Yume didn't like her opinion, but Magnolia wasn't going to question it. She only hoped that the woman wouldn't hold a grudge or have a bad impression on her, because despite their differences and disagreements, Magnolia still had dear feelings for her.

"Understood." Magnolia said, holding the man a bit firmer before moving next to the blonde, following all the way up to the camp, they finally reached a spot near a tree, and Magnolia, not so gently, dropped the man on it.

As Yume mentioned about a message, requesting her help, Magnolia nodded deeply. "As you wish, madam Yume." She said, gazing at her, and then down at the restrained brigand, kneeling next to him. "I will try to snap him awake." Magnolia said, approaching a hand to his chin and gently holding it up, while a free hand slipped into her dress and a sound of a zip hinted she had a pouch under it, before she took a dark green leaf out of it.

Approaching it to the man's nose, Magnolia crushed the plant, letting it linger for a couple seconds before the man's head tilted, his nose wrinkled, and he suddenly woke up, a bit groggy and groaning in pain, squirming briefly as he attempted to move, and widening his eyes when his consciousness fully returned.

She was curious what the maid had brought out to awaken the man, before realising that the important piece right now was looking in control to this individual. Putting aside her curiosity, she focused her attention on the man before her - his grogginess working towards her benefit, at least for the moment.

. Yo're tired up, and unable to move for the moment. You're only alive because you have a purpose, a message that I want delivered.

She gave the man a single second to focus on her, continuing as soon as his eyes reached her general vicinity. Her voice was dull, emotionless. She detested this already, and knew that the worse part was coming.

You and your friends are to leave the village of Oflainn alone. It is under the hogo - the shield - of the Lion's Pride. Anyone who raises a hand against the village, will lose their hand. Should you attempt to harm anyone in the village, it will be returned tenfold upon to you.

She shifted in place, trying to put off the moment, but knowing that she couldn't do so any further. Flicking her hand ever so slightly to catch Magnolia's attention, Yume continued without looking at the maid.

As you have raised a weapon against us...we shall make sure that you can no longer do such a thing, ever again. You fought with your right hand, and as such you have shown that you do not require such an appendage anymore. Without it, purpose you can learn to stray from a life of violence.

She didn't take her eyes off the man's face, knowing that if she did she would see the horror that Magnolia was likely about to inflict. She knew that she didn't want to see it, but that it also had to be done - and that meant that she must honour this man's sacrifice, lest she make a fool of herself. Okubyō ni meiyo wanai.

The bandit, despite groggy at first, squirmed, vaguely listening to Yume's voice until his consciousness returned completely, quickly enough for him to hear she needed a message delivered. His teeth gritted, struggling and trying to free himself from his bounds.

"You bitch, get rid of these ropes!" He growled, seeing her face, and frowning his lips as an initial threat had come, which made him scowl and glare at Yume... At least until the threat slipped the realms of collectivity, and became a certainty to him.

His struggles became more intense, and Magnolia approached him, while he shifted his gaze between her and Yume, breathing erratically. "No! Get away from memmhph-" His words were quickly silenced by a cloth Magnolia shoved into his mouth, and her voice was just as cold as Yume's.

"You better bite it, sir brigand. It will let you endure the pain better." She said, with words that were clearly a mockery, even if her emotions and tone didn't even flinch away from the usual. The man's eyelids twitched, and he began panicking, albeit he couldn't free his mouth, not when Magnolia held him a bit longer, just before taking a glance at Yume.

That bravado once again.

Magnolia looked at the bandit, for a moment considering the options before letting out a sigh between her teeth, and suddenly striking a quick and precise hit on the bandit's temple, sending him into a knock out. Standing, the maid looked at Yume, lingering her gaze for a moment. "Madam Yume. Despite everything I have told you, I won't allow yourself to become someone you are not." She spoke. "We have already killed many of them. If that doesn't teach them a lesson, then we can take more drastic measures."

Her lips turned thin, turning away.

"Come. We shall go back."

The release of breath that Yume wasn't even aware she'd been holding was audible. Audible enough that she was sure that Magnolia would have noticed it. She had braced herself, waited for the inevitable - and the maid had done her the favour of backing down when she could not.

Arigatō, hontōni, Magnolia-san. I...

She didn't need to say the words aloud. They both knew that she would never have been able to commit such an act if it were just here - she had relied on the ruthlessness of another, in order to do what she was uncomfortable with doing.

I am sorry, for...assuming that you would do such a thing. It was unkind of me. Unfriend like. I will be a better friend to you, in the future days.

She bowed deeply to Magnolia, before righting herself and following the maid back towards the village. For the time being, at least, the brigands had been warned. Whether that stopped their attempted influence over the innocent peoples of Oflainn, Yume had no idea. Izure ni seyo, watashi wa koko ni imasu. Sorera no junbi ga dekite imasu.

She would be ready next time. She knew now, in her heart, that in this world some people were going to be hurt in order for others to be saved. Genjitsu no sekai to kawaranai.

Her eyes shifted to Magnolia, knowing that she owed the maid for everything she had done here. Not simply the way in which her friend had saved her life, but in the ways that one couldn't see without truly looking deeper.

You are a good person, Magnolia-san...Mottomo kurai sora no naka de kagayaku hoshi. I wish one day to be as selfless as you.

"After the way that I acted, it was a fair assumption." Magnolia said, pausing to look at Yume, turning to her so she could face the blonde.

"... You are the first person that has called me a friend in years. Asking for you to be more than that... It would probably be a sin of greedy from me, madam." She said, resting a hand on her chest while her gaze continued to lock on Yume. However that naive woman managed to pull her heartstrings so easily was beyond Magnolia's comphreension. But perhaps it was the honesty and integrity Yume held.

Perhaps the same reason why Magnolia kept around Trevor for so long. And the same reason she was never averted by Zera's loudness, despite preferring a gentle silence.

Her gaze fell, however, when Yume's compliment regarding her selfless came.

For the first time in a while, and perhaps ever in front of Yume, Magnolia's expressions quivered into anything that didn't resemble true neutrality. With her lips curling down, ever so faintly, and a reflection shimmering in her eyes, that for once averted from who she was talking to while actively avoiding a direct gaze, watery that was soon faded by a slow blink, that was perhaps meticulously calculated so she could dry them before anything showed.

"Thank you, madam Yume." Magnolia limited herself to that, pushing away the sorrow that slip into her mind, as she turned and began moving, calm and patient, as she usually looked, once again regaining her emotionless expressions.
