The alarm rang, its musical trilling piercing through the darkness of the room. A hand slid out from under the sheets and moved around in the darkness trying to find the source of the noise. It found it eventually. A smartphone with a matte black back that had a silver version of Samsung's logo. The hand grabbed the phone and pulled it under the sheets, and the owner of said hand turned it on to cancel the alarm. When it happened, the phone's bright screen felt like someone threw a flash bang at the owner. The sensation eventually calmed down as the owner of the phone lowered the brightness. The alarm continued to make its noise, and the phone itself showed the time as 5:00 AM. He sighed. Putting his phone back on the nightstand next to his bed, the owner tossed aside his sheets, so he could get out of bed and begin his day. Once the sheets came away, they revealed a young man in his late teens. His mussed auburn-colored hair was short and sticking out every which way. He had a pair of golden-brown colored eyes which leaned towards the gold end of the spectrum, making it appear unnatural. His skin was a healthy pinkish white, and there were signs of a developing tan from spending a lot of time out in the sun. He was currently wearing a pair of pajamas which consisted of a pair of navy-blue sweats and a short-sleeved black v-neck t-shirt.

This was quickly divulged for some workout clothing. He changed into a sleeveless black gym shirt, a pair of cargo shorts, and a pair of red and black running shoes. After washing up fast in the bathroom to look presentable for the public, he would sneak out of the house while his aunt and uncle were asleep. He put in some earbuds from a high-quality brand, queued up some running music, and began his three-mile run. This was his daily routine. The teenager would wake up every morning at 5 and start his run, do a series of core exercises for an hour, and start practicing martial arts for 30 minutes. Once he was finished after two hours of training, the young man would get back home and hop into the shower, and he would make breakfast for the family. One of the benefits of waking up early is that you get to go to school with a full breakfast in your stomach instead of rushing off with a piece of toast like some cliché anime character. Even though he went to an American school, he specifically avoided taking a seat by the window because of its cursed nature. Ah, well. He didn't have to worry about that today. As it was a Saturday! He could take a day off without a care in the world. The teen got back home from his two-hour workout session and took that shower, revealing a toned body that was the result of years of physical training. He got out of the shower feeling clean and put on fresh clothes.

This was a long-sleeved navy-blue shirt with a white front, a black hoodie with a white front, a pair of navy-blue jeans, and black sneakers. He then got downstairs and began setting up the kitchen. He cooked a standard meal for a family of four with coffee to complete it. The smells lured his family downstairs who were in a zombie-like state at the moment. That would change once they have coffee. Once everyone was more alert, they would start speaking like normal people instead of grunting and moaning. The young man's uncle, Peter Salazar, was the first to speak up.

"So, what's everyone's plans for today?"

The teenager shrugged and finished his toast. "I'm going to be spending the next few hours trying out a new VR game I got."

His cousin, Helen, looked at him. "A new fantasy game?"

He nodded. "Yup. Although I can't really talk about it because I don't have a lot of information about it."

Uncle Peter nodded and said, "The reason I'm bringing this up is that we're going to be absent for most of the day as it's our anniversary. So, can we trust you two to hold down the fort?"

Both teenagers nodded and gave an affirmative. Pleased by this, Uncle Peter and his wife, Aunt Alicia, would finish eating and depart from the dining room, so they could get ready to go out. The teenager took care of the dishes and the cleanup. The two said goodbye and watched the adults leave the house. Once they were gone, Helen turned to look at the boy.

"Johnny... it isn't THAT game is it?"

John looked at her with a startled expression. 'She knows about Terrasphere?'

He nodded. "Yeah. What about it?"

She pursed her lips and gave a disgruntled noise. "... Nothing. Just be careful while playing it, will you? I've had a friend who played it before the Agency shut it down. She was on her second death. Any further than that and she might've died."

John looked at Helen with a cheeky grin. "Really? Those rumors? You seriously believe them?"

Helen stared at him with a determined expression. "I'm not messing around here, Johnny. You could DIE. I know I won't be able to stop you from playing even if you now know that, but all I want is one thing. For you to be careful."

John was taken aback. His cousin was usually never like this, but he understood where she was coming from to an extent. After all, he nearly died in the real world when he was younger. He sighed and nodded. "I get it. I really do. I'll be as careful as I could possibly be. Satisfied?"

Helen nodded, and the two went to their respective rooms. While Helen queued up her Twitch stream and Dark Souls, John would begin to set up his VR gear, so he could mess around with Terrasphere. He managed to load up the client and got into the game. Opening his eyes, John found himself in a spacious that put the one he had to shame. It was a light gray color, yet everything looked particularly spartan in design. In front of him, was himself. This surprised him as the figure that wore his skin was wearing the same clothes. He was given the option to go into the game as himself, but he found that to be lame. Instead, he chose to craft his avatar into a different person entirely. It was a weird feeling seeing himself being turned into a girl when he moved the slider, but that feeling would fade in time. Instead, it was replaced by a desire to create the perfect character in his mind's eye. This inadvertently led to him taking three hours to customize his avatar, but it was worth it. He was now prompted to input his username, where he would punch in "Valen". Once he hit "finish" the room dematerialized, and he would soon find himself elsewhere.

The Scarwoods was a dangerous place. It was home to monsters of all kinds, such as the deadly Scarwolves that made it their territory. Of course, John wouldn't know this as he appeared in said forest. It was bright out, marking the time to be in the middle of the day. Most of his surroundings consisted of thin trees and shrubbery, with a few of those trees showing claw marks on them. The first thing he noticed was the warm and gentle breeze on his skin and the rustling of leaves as the wind blew past. He knelt down and touched the grass with a bare hand, only to pull back in surprise as he actually felt it. Everything was as real as the real world. He didn't know whether to be impressed or terrified of the developers. Eventually, he noticed the weight on his chest and the long hair that blew into his view. John, or Valen as he is called in the game, looked down to see he had actual breasts that were confined by the basic tunic he now wore. He moved through the forest, unaware of the danger, and found a stream nearby. Kneeling, he saw his reflection in the water. Valen was now a girl. This was it. The singular truth that he was in a genuine virtual world. He was about to try and find his UI when he heard some howling.

'Those were wolves. What are wolves doing here?'

Valen looked around for any weapons that he could use, but he saw nothing. Then the first couple of wolves came to him. Then another. They didn't look like normal wolves. They looked bigger than normal and had scars, hence their name. Choosing to do the smart thing, Valen turned around and baled. This triggered the wolves, forcing them to leap into action. And thus, the chase began.

If it wasn't rats, it was wolves. Something about starter quests always had some sort of fascination with murdering lots of critters. Sometimes it was for pelts, sometimes it was to get rid of pests. Either way, it was hardly what Chimney would consider her driving motivation, and so with heavy slogging steps she groaned her way through the woods in search of the quest creatures. She fancied herself as a much more upstanding, much more urbane woman who was above the petty violence of the rurals and the fight or flight savagery of these animal hunts. Nevertheless, the job was the job... and there was no way to grow and learn without going through some growing pains while she was at it.

As she approached the quest area, her attention was captured by a woman kneeling before the waters of a little brook and giving herself the once over.

"Shit, I'd oggle myself too if I had a rack like that, lady..." Chimney said as she stepped into the area, tossing a wink at Valen.

"We're talking wolf whistle and awooga, hon. How long'd ya spend making sure those measurements were just right? Because it. Was. Worth it. But uh, speaking of wolves..." She glanced around at the approaching beasts, picking up her walking cane to wield it more readily as a club as the beasts loomed closer.
"Ya wanting some help with these here poochies? 'Cause I'm all for being the good samaritan and helping out a damsel with her most... intense distresses. But I don't wanna steal ya glory or some such if ya planned on handling this alone none, either. Ya know. Strong independent yadda yadda, I respect ya."

It was a normal Saturday, or at least it started out like one. Akemi got up at 8, as she didn't have to worry about work and could take her time enjoying the morning. After getting dressed she left the house for a morning workout. Nothing too intensive, but enough to get the blood flowing and get her ready for the rest of the day. Even if she didn't have anything special planned it was still a good idea to start the day with some exercise.

It was late enough in the morning that plenty of people had already woken up, and she was hardly the only person who'd decided to greet the day by working up a sweat. The weather was perfect for it, after all, although after a while Akemi ended up wishing that the sun was possibly a little less enthusiastic in sending its rays everywhere. That was a minor complaint, however, and she finished the routine without any difficulties and returned home for breakfast.

As she idly wondered what she'd spend the day on after finishing her meal her mismatched eyes landed on her VR set. She'd left it lying out in the open after trying out a new game about hackers. The game managed to display cyberspace as quite the immersive 3D environment, but like all other VR programs, it lacked something. Something that Akemi had last experienced over four years ago when it all ended without any warning.

She couldn't blame the VRSA for their draconian treatment of that infamous game: through means unknown to everyone it had managed to cause several deaths, and no reasonable safety organization would just ignore that for reasons as selfish as the addictive nature of the game. It provided no essential services and it was a danger to the health of the population: it was only sensible to shut it down to prevent the situation from getting worse. The people who played the game might consider it worth the price, but their families would heartily disagree.

And yet... She'd never managed to forget about the game. She often dreamed about it, about that other world where the rules were so different and allowed her to be something she could never be in this world. Well, unless technology managed to take some rapid leaps in the upcoming years, especially in the field of genetic engineering. There were already medical applications of the technology, but what Akemi dreamed of was still nothing more than a distant dream. A dream about running free.

She realized that she'd been standing there, staring at the VR set, for several minutes now. With a snap she shook her head, trying to dismiss those nostalgic thoughts. Terrasphere was gone, and it had been for four years. She'd try to log in like she'd done many times before, but the result would be the same as always. And then she'd find something else to do, like always. After cleaning up her apartment and making sure she'd locked the door after returning home she lay down on her bed with the VR set strapped to her face. Like she'd done many times before, she activated the device and tried to log in to a world which had been lost to her for over four years. She was certain she'd get the same error as always-

It would be difficult to describe the sheer shock that Akemi felt as the game started up and the real world disappeared, her consciousness pulled into another world entirely. Within moments she found herself in an empty space, with a menu hovering in front of her. As she processed her shock she quickly went through the menu, motioning with hands which trembled with suppressed excitement. It was... different. As her mismatched eyes consumed every line of text that the menu was willing to offer it became clear things had changed. Mechanics had changed, and the reason she'd ended up in this creation area was that she'd have to reassign her masteries before she could continue. A small part of her wondered if this was an opportunity to try something different, but she didn't even really have to think about the answer to that question as she did her best to have the new layout match the original. The memories were still fresh in her mind, so at least she only had to read up on what changed and figure out what best matched her memories.

With all the decisions locked in Akemi took a deep imaginary breath before confirming that she was done with character creation (or recreation) and once again felt her consciousness shift to another place entirely.

Mizuki opened her eyes and found herself standing under an open sky, close to the entrance of a collapsed mineshaft. She blinked several times as she tried to focus, her nose twitching and her ears swiveling as she was assaulted by an entire world of smells and sounds that her real-life self would never be able to perceive. It took a moment before she got accustomed to it, after which she quickly looked around, and then at herself. In front of her eyes, there was a furred muzzle, and as she looked down she saw large paws pressed firmly against the ground. She was on all fours, and she was glad that she realized that before she tried moving or she'd have probably fallen flat on her face.

Awareness of her current self spread, until she could feel the tail sticking out behind her. She wagged it experimentally, flexing muscles that she hadn't possessed for over four years. The realization that this was real, that this wasn't a dream, that it was actually happening, made her more awake and aware than any amount of exercise or cold showers would have been able to manage. She was back. Back in Terrasphere.

The huntress's tail wagged again, this time in instinctive joy as she raised her head and sniffed the air greedily as if drinking the scents like a man dying of thirst. Taking a deep breath she howled, the clear sound filling the air as she announced her arrival. A long, joyous cry, all her doubts about Terrasphere forgotten at this moment as the sensations came flooding back.

Howling alone wasn't enough. Dropping into a crouch she launched herself, powerful legs pushing away the ground as she leaped through the air. Once she hit the ground once more she began to run, the world around her blurring as she raced across the landscape, paws leaving deep imprints in the dirt as she felt the wind wash over her frame, stroking her tough fur. Her gaze was only forward, all thoughts other than the need to run forgotten.

She didn't know how long she'd been running when she heard the howl of other wolves. Quickly moving her legs she came to a halt, ears directed forward as she listened to the sound. It sounded like... a hunt. In the forest ahead of her other wolves had begun to hunt. She recognized the signs, and in her current mood, she answered with a howl of her own before she once more dashed forward, this time entering the forest and weaving between the trees as she moved to join her kin. She wasn't hungry, or at least no more than usual, but right now the thrill of the hunt was exactly what she wished to experience.

Of course, joining wolves who weren't part of your pack in a hunt wasn't something easily done. But they surely wouldn't have anything to complain about if she helped them bag even more prey than they would otherwise have caught. However, as she got closer and the scents got richer, she realized that the scent of the prey wasn't deer, elk, or any other creature native to the forest.

It smelled like a human.

The realization was like the cold bucket of water that Mizuki had needed to come back to her senses. She'd gotten carried away after returning to Terrasphere, but these wolves were hunting a human. Rather than joining them she should chase them off and get them to hunt something else. She felt a bit bad for the other wolves, that they would be forced to seek other prey, but she couldn't just let them prey on a sapient individual if she could interfere. Fortunately, she shouldn't have much difficulty dissuading them.

@Valen would see another wolf appear, but this one was significantly bigger than the other wolves, with a black and grey coat more suitable for a tundra inhabitant than a forest dweller. This wolf also moved much faster than the other wolves, quickly gaining ground... only to then suddenly come to a halt and turn around, releasing a loud, threatening growl towards the other wolves as the largest lupine stood between them and their prey.

The other wolves, caught off-guard by this development, came to a halt as well, growling and snarling back as they left Valen alone for the moment to instead encircle their larger kin. The largest wolf's growl only gained in intensity, its tail up in the air and its lips peeled back to reveal a savage array of fangs. The fur on its back bristled its ears were pointing forward.

One of the smaller wolves moved forward with a snarl, but the larger wolf snapped its jaws at the audacious display, snarling aggressively. The smaller wolf quickly retreated, and after this process was repeated several times with some of the other wolves the pack that was hunting Valen slowly retreated, slinking away rather than risking a fight with the larger wolf who was clearly willing to hold its ground.

Once all the smaller wolves had departed Mizuki relaxed, turning around and looking at the two bipedal individuals. She hadn't noticed the second one at first, but... that wasn't a human, was it? She didn't recognize that scent. The non-human seemed more confident than the human, seeing how she'd been willing to pick a fight with the wolves as well.

"Better not to run when chased by wolves. When you run it's the signal for them to attack."

At first, Valen thought that it was over. He couldn't access his UI in time, and he didn't have any weapons on him that could hurt the wolves. He didn't even know if punching them would work. Well, that's a lie. You can typically punch enemies if you wanted, but that was incredibly risky at the best of times. And in a virtual game like this, he didn't want to risk it. And there was no way in hell he was going to fight multiple enemies without having a weapon. He wasn't a complete suicidal maniac. That might change if he got better equipment. Then a strange woman with blonde hair showed up. He didn't register what she said at first, but then it hit him and made his face turn red. At that moment, Valen wasn't sure if he should tell this mystery woman that he was a guy or not. Eh. He'll think about that later. Then the woman asked about how long he spent working on the avatar, and he couldn't find the words. Then... quietly he said:

"About three hours."
Then, he said out loud, "Oh no, help is very much appreciated in these circumstances. Mostly because I JUST got here soooo..."

Before he could do or say anything else. Another wolf showed up to join the party. This caused him to throw up his arms in exasperation as he said, "Oh, great! Another one. Anything else want to eat me today?" Then the strangest thing happened. The big wolf didn't attack him, instead choosing to face down the wolf pack that chased him and... was it telling them off?

'This day keeps getting stranger and stranger.'

After the big scary wolf sent the other ones away, it turned around to face him and the person with him. Then it fucking talked. This honestly freaked Valen out. He wasn't used to seeing talking wolves right in front of him other than movies and TV shows. When the wolf said its piece, Valen looked to the side and crossed his arms, sporting an embarrassed face and a small pout.

"I knew that. I just... panicked. I'm not used to this kind of thing."

It is true. While he did play a bunch of desktop MMOs, this was technically his first VR MMO ever. One that he actually attempted to play at least. The other games that were publicly available didn't grab his attention, although he did eye a potential VR first-person shooter. He looked towards the wolf and asked,

"Sorry if this sounds strange, but are you part of the game or are you a player?"

The arrival of Mizuki was much welcomed, as it kept the growing pack of beasts at bay by introducing a bit of that primal savagery that she herself so terribly lacked. Chimney merely nodded in affirmation to Mizuki's warning not to run, accepting it as a reasonable enough truth that there was no need to comment or question over it. Instead she returned her attention to Valen, who seemed to be very out of sorts and left reeling from everything going on.

"Ahhh, new to the game, say no more I understand ya completely. I myself was a newcomer once upon a... like, two days ago was it? Yeah I mean it ain't been long for myself neither but uhhh, man. Rought start ya got there lady." She gestured at the wolves at the periphery, in case they'd been forgotten already.

"And since ya asked oh so kindly I'd be more than happy to provide you with some pugilist protection, courtesy of yours truly. Maybe you can pay me back after, eh? Spend another three hours filling me out this time? But to answer your questions there: I'd love to eat ya, if'n ya let me buy you a drink first. And am I a player?" Raising the walking cane to her brow, Chimney pushed the rim of her tophat in a small salute as she gave Valen another wink.
"I'll let you decide that."

Turning her attention from the buxom blonde newcomer, she swung the cane in hand absent-mindedly while rolling back and forth on her heels.

"How're we lookin, small bark and handsome?" she asked, glancing Mizuki's direction.
"Think we can take 'em without much of a fight, or should I start taking this seriously?"

"Both of you are newcomers then?" While the non-human oozed confidence she still admitted to only having been in this world for two days. The human, meanwhile, clearly was only just now joining this world and was having a difficult time adjusting to it, which made sense given that most people didn't immediately get targeted and surrounded by a pack of wolves. "You should leave the forest and head to a nearby settlement if you don't know what to do."

She ignored Valen's question as she instead looked at Chimney, who had a rather peculiar way of talking. It was good that she was confident even in the current situation of having wolves carefully watching the three of them from a distance, but Mizuki hoped the attitude was just flair and not true arrogance. "They aren't starving, so they won't attack us as long as we don't look like easy prey."

She figured that it'd probably be easier for the other two if they had another biped to talk to. "Give me a moment." With that declaration her appearance quickly began to shift: her skeleton was rearranged and most of the fur that covered her body retreated, only to be replaced by hide armour of similar colour and pattern. The transition was smooth and swift, and within mere seconds the large wolf had turned into a beastkin, although the ears and the tail stayed the same.

"If you've got a way to scare them off I'd like to see it. Otherwise, I'll drive them off and tell them to go hunt something else." The transformation hadn't done much to change her voice, but at least now she looked similar enough to the other two that they shouldn't be confused by the fact that she could talk. Mizuki's gaze returned to the wolves surrounding them, who hadn't taken her transformation as an opportunity to attack but who clearly were still waiting to see if the three bipeds would show enough weakness to justify an attack.
