Utter Hogwash

Enter the Hog Rangers!

Cycle 1

It's a crisp winter morning when the hogs arrive.

They start as a distant brown blur on the horizon, but it isn't long before the reports come in. A tide of squealing, stinking hogs tear their way through the quiescent fields of Solvale, churning the soil into mud beneath their hooves. No one knows where they came from, and as for how many there are?

"I think about... 30 to 50 of them? Hells if I know, I wasn't going to stay and count."

In the end, all that matters is that the hogs are coming, and you, brave adventurers, are the only thing standing between Finweald and hogmageddon.

But the hogs have a vanguard of their own. Five of their strongest, bearing their own strange powers, lead the charge. Felling these porcine paragons could be all it takes to scatter the tide.

Good luck, Starcalled.

"There they are, Max!"

Jade, the little fairy, pointed at the hogs. Max huffed in response.

"I'm not damn blind." The monkey boy hissed, and the fairy scrunched nose at the rude response, but soon ignored, trying to be the mature one of the situation.

"I just mean for you to be careful. You will want to rush and charge without thinking, won't you?"

"That's a good plan, actually." He drew his big crystalized sword, aiming it forward in an offensive stance while he frowned. "Speed me up, we need to make sure they won't get to our rearguard!"

"Max, no! You will get hur—"

"EEK EEK OOOOOK!"

"And there he goes."

The fairy sighed, fluttering her wings and chasing the monkey boy, flapping her wings to let out a speedy pixie dust all over him, making his speed increase as he threw himself toward the biggest hog, swinging his blade to slash against its bulky fur.

"So this is one of these hog assaults."

She learned that this was kind of a big hassle that farmers need to deal with every year. Real-life boars are notoriously very hard to kill, and those boar-clearing videos she watched on YouTube indicated that they might need more than a squad of people with guns to clear fantasy boars.

Speaking of which, she's the only one with any firearms in the group, but fancy magic should do the trick.

They awaited, and the Strongest Five™ hog came. Eva pushed some buttons on her wrist, and a flying drone uncloaked, floating several meters from the ground.

"It's open season. Marking the targets."

The drone emitted a beep, pinging the weird boars on the field and relaying the information to the rest of the group as Eva herself took out her rifle.

"Mama!"

Tick leaned behind @Eva's left side, watching at the five beefy main antagonists with squinty irises, the lenses on her glassy eyes narrowing as she analyzed their foes, lackadaisical.

"Oooh are we hunting dinner? Is this tonight's food, mama?"

Tock emerged from the right, tilting her head to face Eva, as much as this awkward angle allowed.

"You are not scared of walking food, right mama? You are not like papa."

If anything, because Papa technically fits the 'walking food' label given his chosen race: dog.

The twins finally hopped next to the silver lady, one on each side. Already one of their little anti-hog team had rushed in, and the feedback from mama's drones became data in their eyes. They both took a few steps backwards, giving enough space to Eva as she pulled out a weapon.

"Tock stays riight behind mama. I'll work on the picnic meanwhile!"

"Tick will go get the meat for the sandwiches."

Tick darted off infront of Eva, breaking every gun safety protocol known to humanity as she walks infront of the barrel like she's asking for her motherboard to be blown up, repositioning in one sliding maneuever, with the floor rotting away as grass and trees alike were leeched free of life, energy cackling on her palms. Gaps on the wood begun to emanate a faint purple hue as the moving parts on her limbs started to open up to allow a better flow of her own core's magic straight onto the malicious orb, moments before shooting it straight through the brute.

Monkeys and boars were all the same for her, but given this monkey is part of the team, Tick opted for an implosion, setting the hog's insides ablaze. It was almost like cheap food by now, with this instant pork neatly prepared and ready to be served!

HEY! Be careful with the food!

Tock shouted, a hand tugging from Eva's clothes as she pointed an accussing finger back to her sister, who simply smiled, self-absorbed in her victory over the now beef jerky roasted into a coal.

"Bleh!"

You overcooked it, you troglodyte brute...

"Damn, that's a lot of bacon." A low whistle echoed from the tree branches as the blonde gazed over the sea of hogs just over the horizon, her boots cushioning her fall as the ranger landed besides a monkey boy and his fairy.

The little pixie raised a valid point, but it was clear that her companion only listened to the parts that fit their narrative as he rushed towards the Strongest Five Bacons™ that stepped forth from the passel. A little drone soon took to the skies, the data analyzed by the small construct displayed to those near its creator.

A nod was given towards the not Lune white-haired woman before Lúthien began to look over the information, only partially aware of the chatter by the apparent children of the woman. "Mmm, big boy over there kinda looks like a problem—!!!" Her words cut out abruptly when a deafening boom monopolized the space, before a hand tried to lessen the persistent ringing pitch that echoed inside one of her ears.

"Nevermind, don’t gotta worry about that one anymore…" Her gaze flickered towards the two magia as a light hearted scoff escaped her lips, before the ranger pointed towards the pinklet in the distance. "I’ll focus on those two instead."

While the cute little hog certainly possessed a problem, the one that had truly caught her attention was the smaller gray piglet behind it. The magical witch hat atop their head was somewhat unsettling given that they had no idea as to what hog magic could entail and, in her honest opinion, it was probably best to take them out before they had to find out.

Two arrows were pulled from her quiver and nocked back as the ranger rushed behind some dried up bushes to get a better view of the pair, the small marbles embedded in the center of their tips glistening against the sunlight. She only had a moment to spare once her cover had been blown, the arrows rapidly whizzing through the air and towards their intended target. One of them was intercepted by the bigger pink-colored hog, though it was hard to tell if the pinklet had done it purposely or just been in the way due to their larger size.

A snap of her fingers served as the catalyst once the arrows were in place, a shower of sparks momentarily surrounding both hogs before a chain of explosions detonated around them. The thick fog of pinks, purples, and blues slowly dissipated, revealing that the cute hog was still standing… though their companion had certainly passed onto better mudfields.

"That’s two down, only three more to go." At this rate it seemed likely that the group would contain the problem before dinnertime… perhaps just in time to enjoy the nice BBQ suggested by the twins.

Finally, some time to relax. Everything's been so hectic lately, it's about time I was able to just enjoy a day...

...Hm? What's the commotion about? Is something happening?

...

...THIRTY TO FIFTY WILD HOGS!? I guess my relaxation will have to wait!

The red-haired warrior donned the kitsune-themed festival mask he had used from time to time as a means of anonymity and rushed to meet the wild hogs... before noticing the group of defenders forming. Instead, the masked swordsman convened with the others.

"I heard there are some wild hogs attacking. Let me help."

Not like they have a choice, he'll help anyway. It seemed that a certain other swordsman was eager to get to the fighting already, though. No time to waste, I guess. He rushed into the fray, setting his sights on a particularly-speedy-looking blue hog. As he approached for his strikes though, he got a bit distracted by a... pink hog!? What the...

With his mind wandering, his blade faltered, and his first strike failed to down the oddly-colored hog. A horizontal slash barely too distant to deal the serious damage grazed the hog but did, however, give him an opportunity to swing the momentum of the strike around and bring, again, the tip of the sword down onto the swine to seal its fate.

Exit the Hog Rangers...?

Cycle 2

In the end, a hog is a hog.

The Brute Hog snorted as Dynamax approached. It was too tough to squeal as the monkey-boy's blade sliced through it's hide. Here was its target, and it would be trampled beneath its hooves...

Ping! Beep...
FWOOSH

...and that was its last thought as Tick's beam blasted through, leaving a scorched husk slumping on the ground.

The Magic Hog shrank away, mumbling incoherently. It was small and weak, even for a normal hog, but it was ready to avenge its comrade with a powerful spell...

Fwip...
B-B-BOOM

But in the end, it didn't have a chance to gather its magics before it was felled by Luthien's greater spells.

The Fast Hog wasn't worried. It could outrun any threat - it didn't need to worry about the slow two-legs getting in its way. It scuffed the ground with its hooves, picking its first fragile target-

SHING

But its pride was its downfall, as Sean closed the distance first and stained the blue hog red.

Only the Cute Hog and the Filthy Hog remained. The Filthy hog didn't seem phased - or perhaps it hadn't seen what had happened? It snorted and moved, trampling the ground around it into more sticky mud...

The Cute Hog, on the other hand...

OINK!

The Cute Hog was pissed.

It spun in its fury towards the nearest target, Sean, and threw its full weight at him and threw him back into the mud recently churned up by its remaining partner. The Cute Hog continued running, ending up by the Filthy Hog's side, and smacked it before pointing at Dynamax.

Sui...?

SQUONK!

The Filthy Hog turned slowly in Dynamax's direction, then stuck its snout into the mud around it. There was an unpleasant sucking noise, and then the hog lifted its head and flung a mass of mud and gods knew what else right towards him.

"Hmm, who is this 'papa' you are referring to?" The white-haired woman raised her one eyebrow, not having any idea who Tick was talking about.

After assessing the damage that the hog just took, Eva warned the twins. "Be careful not to deal excessive damage, we're close to the settlement, after all." It wouldn't be funny if the projectile missed and landed somewhere near the village.

She quickly dismissed Tock's concern, pointing at the stinky hog. "I don't think we want to eat those, especially that one." Readying her rifle while rushing forward, her drone hovered to her side, marking the target for Tick and Tock to finish.

"We'll just execute it, follow up on my shot."

Tock pointed a finger right at the TanElf who went from worrying over some beef jerky to disregard it as it imploded (and was consequently RUINED for the purposes of cooking).

"Tock recognizes that accent! That's no native speaker..."

"She's a LATINA. Tock can tell, Tock has a sister from Mexico!"

"Huh? You mean Auntie Clock?"

Tock disregarded the correction with a wave of her hand. Potato potato, almost the same!

"Point is: She can help us with spicing up the meat!"

No one better for the job than a latin person whose been exposed to the unfathomable power of the sun in a 24/7 basis.

As Eva begun to question who she's supposed to be married with, Tick giggling, poking her own forehead.

Haha, silly Tick, forgot that mama didn't see papa just yet. Tock, show her!

No sooner than that, magic begun to wrap around the blue twin, blurring her form until it begun to grow taller, bulkier. Soon it wasn't the pale puppet what stood close to Eva. Nor was it snow-white locks what clad her head. The fogginess begun to spread, with the first thing to come into sight being the fabulous coat Tock was wearing right now, or rather, 'Papa'.

"This is Papa. Tock believes he looks dashing, fit for a lady such as mama."

HAHAHA EVEN NAILED THE VOICE!

Clap clap clap!, went Ticks wodden hands.

"This is his face when he says 'Friend or foe' after dodging a carriage going full speed at him."

"And this one is when he's disappointed in us and proceeds to stab Tick."

And with that, Tock's form poofed on a blue mist before revealing the twin once again, reversing the illusion spell she casted earlier.

Leaving Papa aside, what do you MEAN we can't eat them?! The rest look healthy, we even have a cute one over there!

Yes Mama, Tick promises she won't accidentally misfire a meteor shower on a town if you let us. Tick wants the pink one for lunch.

Her fingers twisted on their axis, grabby hands aimed at the cute hog. On Eva's command, and after one loud burst from her rifle, purple tendrils begun to burst from the ground up to squeeze around both hogs, turning out to be a set of boa constrictors formed out of the soil's life. With the small pinky hog being, well, smaller, it meant an easier prey to squeeze and snap away their existence.

Stinky, however, was far too slippery and large to properly end this way.

See, Tick should have gone all out, it would be dead by now!

"Huh... that elf made it sound like The Bacon Five™ were a lot stronger." She hadn’t expected for three hogs to go down in quick succession, and even the surviving pink one already looked like they’d seen better days… in fact, it looked downright pissed.

She hadn’t expected someone else to pick up on her heritage by her voice alone, so when Tock proudly proclaimed Lúthien to be latina she’d earned the full attention of the ranger as she made her way closer to the makeshift party. "Pffft, I mean you’re not wrong there… if you guys need help for the barbecue count me in~

A wide berth was given to lil’ monkey boy and his fairy, the stench that clung to them too much for her sensitive nose, and all Lúthien could afford at the moment was an apologetic nod as she quickly continued on her way. The filthy wooly target was large enough that Lúthien wasn’t worried about missing her shot, but the continuous chatter of the magia twins caused her to look in their direction just as Tock shifted into a very familiar green-haired caenis.

"BWAHAHAHAAA!!!" It took a moment before the blonde was finally able to reel in her laughter long enough to actually speak, a hand wiping away the tears that had formed at the edge of her eyes. Even the disappointed look had been spot on. "Damn, that’s a perfect mimicry of Ash… it’s a shame he’s not here to see it."

Eva’s dismissal of the hog BBQ talks was quickly met by protests from the twins and, while the blonde could understand where the woman was coming from, she still felt a need to back up the two little magia that had proposed the idea.

"The girls are right, I wouldn’t touch that one myself—" A nod was given in the direction of the filthy hog as Lúthien nocked an arrow onto her bow. She had reservations about the unnaturally blue hog that Sean had cut down, and the lil’ wizard one had been so tiny there was probably not enough meat to go around. "—but the pink and tan hogs look good enough for a meal."

The loud burst from Eva’s rifle cut the chatter short, with the twins quick to follow up on the woman’s attack. Dark tendrils burst from the ground and held Mr. Stinky in place, before a single arrow pierced through the middle of the wooly fur that covered their eyes—effectively ending the hog’s struggle against the magical restraints.

3x Filthy

The mass of extremely stinky mud made Dynamax scowl and wrinkle his nose beforehand. He tried to dodge, averting his face... But way too late to avoid it.

SPLAAASH!!

"Ew."

"Motherfu—" The monkey boy lamented trying to wipe his eyes, having his face and body all covered by mud while everyone else gave the hogs a big arse kicking.

"Oh no, did any of it got in your eyes? Let me help you!"

The fairy approached, concerned and trying check his eyes.

"M-Maybe.. Can you see if— WAIT I don't need your damn help!" He protested, but the fairy insisted.

"Stop being so stubborn! Let me see how it is..."

When Jade was done with it, the battle was already done, and Max could only pout staring at the battlefield.

"Shit, they hogged all the EXP."

"Hahaha, nice pun! Hogged~"

"Are you braindead? That wasn't a pun. They literally took all EXP. Well, screw that. Let's see if we can at least loot something."

Huffing, the boy approached the hogs, and started skinning it.

Cycle 3

The hogs' final stand was, ultimately, a futile one.

SQUOooo...

The Cute Hog's final cry trailed off as its life was choked from it.

Oink...?

The Filthy Hog, slow as always, had only a moment to wonder why its compatriot had fallen silent before an arrow ensured it would never wonder again.

The spearhead of the suid swarm broke against the Starcalled like glass. Blood mixed into the muck of battlefield, somehow making things smell worse than it already did.

In the distance, the tide of lesser hogs approached. As the scented blood and sighted bodies, they began to slow, eyes filled with terror at seeing the slaughtered remains of their best.

And then, in the distance...

"SCROOOOOOOOONK!"

A squeal more like a roar echoed through the air. A shape made itself known, rising above the others, all tusks and fur and red-eyed fury.

And driven by a fear greater than even the Starcalled, the horde resumed its charge.

Probably a good time to get out of here and report back.
