Blader X
Guest
I am Blader X, Blader of Suburbia, and I have only known defeat...
Crash, slash, boom.
Grating metal on metal.
Sparks.
Swishing wind.
Sparks.
Blow upon blow.
Upon blow.
Upon blow.
In the darkness of the spirita cosmos, Blader X had clashed again and again with the mechanical overlord. Where they met, in those instants, then and only then, was there light. It was a moment that should have lasted her lifetime. But, in the end, Blader X had survived.
A breeze blew ruffling her bangs with all the kindness of an industrial furnace. This was from an explosion in the distance. Cubey, Blader X's erstwhile tinker droid companion, looked on.
*whir whir whir*
It was, at this point, a reactionary battle for both sides. The smell in the air; blood, oil, and shaved steel, intertwined until there was no difference. Plans were made, lives threw themselves against lives. The battle had finally become an honest war.
Cubey hovered low about Blader X monitoring, nudging her, from where she lay sprawled amongst the junk. She wasn't moving, no she was still breathing, only just.
*whir whir whir*
Cubey laid across Blader X's chest humming quietly like a dog trying to keep its owner warm...

"huh...?"
Night had fallen as a distant noise like an air raid siren and a much closer scratching sensation awoke her.
*whir whir whir*
"Cubey...?"
*whir whir whir*
"owowow that hurts you idiot... what are you dragging me for...?"
Her voice was hoarse and weak. It wasn't a consideration at this time, but the substances exposed to even a Starcalled's lungs from this conflict couldn't have been healthy. Much less, for landers.
Blader X coughed as Cubey continued to drag her from the collar of her shirt. Bleary-eyed, Blader X struggled to raise a finger to touch something in the air. It was the U.I.. In response, her status was laid out in front of her. Legs, Left Arm, Right Shoulder, One Rib... these were colored red. Red meant damaged beyond use. Everything else, was red-yellow, or pure yellow if she was feeling optimistic----it was hard to tell with her vision swimming.
"You saw the status before I did Cubey, heck, I usually leave it all to you so you probably know better than I do----this isn't going to work."
X coughed out the words.
*whir whir whir*
Cubey replied.
"I know the battle is over, but why would -that- matter? I can tell----this isn't one of those clean endings, is it? Just like always. Yeah, I'm used to it at this point. So let me guess... they all went 'berserk' or something, 'there must always be a robot queen' that sort of thing..."
*whir whir whir*
"I'm not trying to sound cool."
*whir whir whir*
"You projected the time for regeneration didn't you, the energy costs? I don't understand them very well but we lowly humans have a thing called 'pain' to help fill in the gaps..."
*...*
"Answer me."
Cubey didn't answer as it continued to drag Blader X who was gradually regaining her faculties. It would seem like the concussion had subsided at least. That was about it. The numbness throughout her body was slowly subsiding to make room for white-hot pain. As it did, the night continued to come to life around them, groaning steel and thrashing, something or somethings that sounded like a mechanized roar.
Blader X sighed.
"Cubey, engage admin mode"
*!*
Cubey seemed to shake a bit as it suddenly stopped and approached Blader X's face for security confirmation.
"Here are your orders. Leave me somewhere that -doesn't- have a stray screw or bolt prodding me, and get out of here. Go become a coffee machine or something."
*whir whir whir*
"Blader X not found? Don't act coy with me you rust bucket, I'm right here dummy..."
Gritting her teeth she formed a weak fist and gave Cubey an even weaker little downward bomp like it was a messed up TV or something.
*whir whir whir*
"I know I've been found, don't make me say the override password."
*whir whir whir*
Blader X let out a long sigh.
"So let me get this straight Cubey. Instead of going out nobly and forgotten giving my all to put a little mark on yet another world-ending disaster, you want me to somehow get up, fight across the entire rampaging enemy base---where they're probably way more dangerous than before---so that I can get pathetically torn up by a bunch of small fry that'll probably gain enough exp from me to get a promotion."
*whir whir whir*
"You're an idiot Cubey, but thank you."
"..."
"Focus all regeneration functions on my right shoulder. I'm a Blader, right? Or did you forget. I need to be able to swing a blade. What the heck do I need legs for, save them for later, and don't stop moving either."
*whir whir whir*
"Don't give me that, you asked for this. You want the impossible? Then give me a miracle. No hard feelings, what happens, happens."
***
Right Shoulder, Yellow-Green. Legs, Yellow-Red.
"Haaah... Haaah..."
Blader X stood shakily using the floating Cubey as a crutch. Before her was a sprawled out mechanical beast. It had leaped at them from the shadows with a horrendous screech.
"We passed... the first test..."
For a moment Blader X moved to collapse on her rear right then and there to catch her breath, but she quickly realized that if she did that, she probably wouldn't have the strength to get back up.
So, instead she leaned over on Cubey as it bobbed under her weight. She laid her cheek across the top of its flat surface and let the cool night dew that had gathered on her companion soothe her cheek.
*whir whir whir*
"Yeah, I know, time to get moving again, right? Really, who was it that's asking for the impossible now?"
X heaved a long sigh, then groaned as she righted herself.
"I guess I called it, if those magia-whatsits were converting and controlling animals, then I guess they wouldn't be all that happy once they got their brains back... crap now I feel bad... well it started it..."
*whir whir whir*
"I figure we'll have to find a way to get through at least four or six more engagements like this without us taking any damage---if we're lucky. One wrong move and we might lose all the progress we've made putting ourselves back together..."
*whir whir whir*
"Yeah, I'm ready as I can be, let's go."
The two figures continued as silhouettes into the night. Blader X, clutching Cubey with her left arm, as her right dangled with a single blade...
The roars, the chaos, the thrashing continued unabated. But for now, it seemed somehow distant and unrelated to them.
Not much longer now, until they reached the center of the enemy base.
*whir whir whir*
"You know, I kind of wish you did become a coffee machine right about now."
