World's Greatest Lovers

The Opening Gala, Redford Museum

It was definitely somewhat of a tall order, being asked by the one with the better set of eyes in their pairing to look for a very important personality, but Devi was more than up for the challenge. She had been making terrible attempts, barely succeeding, at mooching off random partygoers, so she hoped that with a clear and present goal in mind, she might end up with much better results. What was the curator's name again? Arken Aldus? What a weird name.

By some miraculous act of a god, however, Devi managed to find the curator, her target, as she was trying to finish her glass.

"That's her, right? Don't worry, darling. I got this."

With that very confident promise of success, Devi left her glass with @Aika and made her way toward the curator, one Arken Aldus. She repeated her name over and over again in her head just in case she'd forget it, hoping she wouldn't. It was vital to her attempt that she does not mess up the name and heighten her flattery of the woman's ego so as to give advantage to Aika's sticky fingers.

Devi spotted Curator Aldus mingling with some of the gala's attendees. The fiery fighter noticed that she was unarmed and unarmored, though there should have been no doubt about that. It was a gala, after all, and there were enough guards around. Even she and Aika were unarmed and unarmored. For the most part, anyway. Devi was always armed. Her arms were her weapons. But she digressed. If she remembered correctly, the woman was a retired university professor. That was pretty good information, one that she could use to her advantage.

"Excuse me... I'm so sorry to interrupt, but aren't you the curator? Arken Aldus? The woman responsible for the museum's close ties to several universities' anthropology and archaeology departments? Professor Jonas Indie has told me so many good things about you. I'm Devora Burns. Charmed."

The curator excused herself from her previous conversation partners after looking Devi up and down, from head to toe. "Well, hello," she smirked, finding Devi quite the eye-pleaser. The curator wasted no time in shaking hands with Devi. "You must be one of our many wealthy donors. Welcome to the gala! It's just a shame you had to learn all about that from...Jonas. Between you and me, he's a little...off, what with all that rubbish about the occult. I hope you're not the same?"

Devi shook her head, chuckling as if she was born for this role. Maybe she was. The curator's response should have been the only cue Aika needed to enact her own part in this scheme, that of a handsy thief.

"Oh, heavens, no! We're but old acquaintances. The oddball has managed to capture my father's heart, and he's been latching himself to his riches like a leech since. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, my father couldn't make it here tonight on account of a sickness. Jonas actually believes the Egg might be cursed?"

Devi was clearly on a roll. Unfortunately, she decided to go a bit further and botched the entire conversation with that last line. Before she delivered that dumb question, the curator was on the verge of growing to like her. Instead, Aldus snorted, "Of course he does. He needs help that boy, and I fear anyone who's acquainted with him does as well. If you'll excuse me, I need to...talk to more sensible people." And then she was off, much to Devi's dismay. Hopefully she had bought enough time for Aika to snatch her stuff?

With a playful smirk on her lips, Aika watched @Devi work her magic with the curator. Enough has already been said regarding the fiery fighter's effortless presence, though tonight seemed to be a bit of a struggle for her. For them, really. Even the ravishing rogue had been a bit...off her game at the gala, having failed her attempt to scout the museum earlier. Hopefully, it wasn't an omen for the bad things to come.

Depositing their glasses on a passing waiter's tray, Aika made her move as soon as she felt it was time. Devi had engaged their prey in quite the conversation, something Aika was too far to hear but not far enough that she couldn't tell how invested their prey was.

Swiftly, she made her way to them, beside the curator, and worked her deft hands inside the woman's fancy clutch. It took her, what? A few seconds to retrieve the woman's pass card and what seemed to be a master key of sorts. She also felt some sort of paper in there, a map perhaps, but decided against taking it out since it may be more cumbersome than needed.

Once Aika was done, she fluttered away from the pair and decided to wait for her partner in one inconspicuous corner of the room, far from where the curator was, having already stowed in her person both the card and the key. Easy peasy.

When their eyes met, Aika gave Devi a wink, signifying she had succeeded, finally, with the task at hand. If only that was all there is to it.

Devi couldn't help but heave a sigh of relief when she saw @Aika's triumphant wink. She had done it. They had done it. With the curator's pass card and master key in their possession, they would have a much easier time in the heist to come than without it. At the very least, they could head straight for the woman's office and maybe, she didn't know, turn off all the alarms and open all the doors. Hey, a girl can dream.

With a grin, she gracefully walked closer to her partner-in-crime. She wanted to smooch her right then and there, but if she's learned anything working with her on these things, it would warrant unnecessary attention, something they'd rather not have for no useful reason. At the very least, she whispered congratulations to her, admiring the ravishing rogue's expertise firsthand.

"Gods, you're so sneaky! I love it!"

Giggling like a high schooler, Devi heaved another sigh, this time of appreciation. Leading the other Lover toward the Purple Egg on the display, she wondered if they'll be able to pull the job off without fighting anyone. She had high hopes they would, especially with the curator's card and key, but chances were, they would always end up in a fight. Not that Devi would complain about that. She really did love to fight.

"Seems like we're set for tonight then, all thanks to you."

The Purple Egg sat lonely atop the pedestal, flanked by informational placards about its discovery and theories about its use—though Jonas' occult theory was missing. Remembering her conversation with the curator, that last part was more than likely intended. Science people always hated that side of humanity, and most often, vice versa. Why can't everyone just get along, right? So Devi can smash their heads together all at once.

In front of the Purple Egg on display, Aika whispered her reply to @Devi's loving worship. It was her usual innuendo-laden reply, a pretty normal thing for the Lovers, though not publicly. Some people were not ready yet for such a thing, though those people should really hurry up and keep up with the times lest they get stuck in their mediocre lives and get left behind.

"Of course! You always did have a soft spot in your...heart for my...fingers. And I love you, sweetie!"

The urge to smooch was shared by Aika, though she appeared very much able to resist the temptation to do so. She's been much better at hiding her feelings from everyone, excluding perhaps Devi who knows her through and through, a side effect of her real life 'work' but that wasn't quite a good thing as most people believe it to be. It did come in handy, sure, but it was perhaps why she was never as good as Devi when it came to presenting herself to others: Most people notice the mask, even if they don't realize what it is.

For the last minute or so, Aika had multitasked flirting with her partner and studying the display. Studying the pedestal made her realize that it had an elaborate defense mechanism. Examining it further made her notice tiny glyphs carved into its base. Her eyes immediately wandered toward the doors, and Aika ended up heaving a sigh at her deciphered conclusion.

"Pedestal has a trigger that would lock all the doors if the egg is removed from it. We should probably do a switch. Just in case."

It was an added obstacle to worry about, but nothing the Lovers couldn't handle. After all, they were the best at what they did, and what they did was always filled with obstacles. Wouldn't be a heist without some complications, would it?

Hmm. While Devi adored @Aika's banter, she did not feel the same way about that last statement. A switch meant that they had to find another thing, something that could maybe take the place of the egg once they take it. But what other thing could that be? They didn't have anything on them that could suffice.

"Sounds good. Maybe something from the curator's office? She seems like the type to have a bunch of worthless junk in there. Like that human-sized doll in her office, if Doctor Stonecrusher's right."

Devi almost forgot about that part. Prior to heading straight for this egg, they would do good in checking out the curator's room first. Not that they wouldn't do that, considering it would be the most useful room aside from where they were now. Maps, books, etcetera... It should have all the useful documents they might need in turning this job into a success.

"Speaking of Doctor's, wasn't Jonas supposed to meet us here at the Gala?"

Devi immediately looked around them when her brain prompted her to remember such a trivia. It seemed that the gala was dying down. People were leaving. There were still more of them there, but it would only be a matter of time before they were ushered out, before their actual thing had to happen, so where in the hecking heck was their good doctor? Or professor. Tomato, potato.

Aika simply shrugged at @Devi's suggestion. It seemed like the best idea they've had so far. At least with regard to the whole switcheroo complication. Either way, they'll have plenty of time to figure that out later. Hopefully. With the curator's stuff, everything should be much easier than without.

"Hm, yes, I almost forgot about our professor... I haven't seen him around, though. Maybe he got too busy for us?"

Aika hoped that was the case. Otherwise, Professor Indie leaving them out to dry might be the first step in their downfall. Always a pain when your own employer decides to back out of the job they themselves had hired you for. Wouldn't they have had enough time to consider everything before actually going with the hire?

The rest of the night, however, at least the gala, proved to be quite enjoyable. While Aika still kept her wits about her, looking around and making sure there would be no new complications to their overall plan, she did enjoy herself, with Devi as beautiful and lovely company. She wished in her heart of hearts that the night, the gala, wouldn't end, but alas, as a wise man once told her, "Everything ends eventually."

Soon they were ushered out of there, prompted by a show of gratitude by the hapless curator and a few other speakers. Despite wanting to zone out of the useless words, Aika restrained herself and listened to each and every thing that came out of the speakers' mouths, hoping to catch more useful information for their heist, though to no avail. Eventually, the gala ended, and they found themselves leaving the premises with the other attendees. For now, at least...

Devi was no stranger to breaking into buildings with stone walls and tiled floors. If she remembers correctly, the museum's ceilings were 30 feet high. Or at least around that. The doors should be closed and locked. That meant that @Aika had to take the lead in trying to unlock them. Hopefully, she wouldn't trigger that alarm. Even if she was that good, though, previous experience had taught the fiery fighter that things always had a way of not going according to plan.

The first two floors had most areas lit with, what Jonas had earlier told them, were continual flame spells placed on sconces. Fortunately for them, the grand entrance would have dimmer lighting than most other areas, as it was way bigger than a lot of them. Unfortunately for them, and for good reason, the guards at the grand entrance would be carrying hooded lanterns. She frowned at the thought, before whispering to her partner in crime.

"Your show, darling. Take it easy, all right? I believe in you."

She had no reason to not believe in Aika's skills. Devi had seen the ravishing rogue work firsthand. She was as good as they came. But again, things always had a way of never going according to plan. Still, lock picking was her specialty—well, one of her specialties—and they did have the curator's pass, so they should be good, right? Yeah, they should be good.

Aika gave @Devi a playful smirk and an accompanying wink before gesturing for her to watch her closely, more flirtation than anything else. She surrendered the curator's pass to her partner-in-crime before channeling enough moisture in the air to harden into a makeshift pair of lock picks. Ah, hydromancy! What a very creative and useful field of elemental magic! And Aika used to think it was all just healing hullabaloo.

"Hold that pass over the front doors. Just in case I accidentally trigger the alarms."

She was confident she wouldn't, but it was much safer having a contingency in place. Just in case. Fortunately for them, Aika was truly gifted with her fingers. Sure, it took her a few seconds more than she would have wanted to spend, but the lock was successfully picked and no alarm was triggered! She took a moment to grin at Devi before carefully opening the front doors.

The grand entrance was a pretty big room, so it was natural for the lighting there to be a bit dimmed. Aika was still able to make out the statues that depicted robed human women flanking the sides of the public mingling space as well as the marble column in the center. The museum's information desk greeted them right in front of them, a few feet from them at least, while to the north, the grand staircase draped in rich carpet would lead back to the second floor where the egg should be waiting.

"Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!"

Aika whispered to Devi before sneakily making her way inside, toward the stairs. Unfortunately for them, as soon as she stepped on the rug, she felt a pressure plate hidden under get activated. Before Aika could do anything, except maybe mouth 'uh oh' under her breath, a weighted net dropped from the ceiling, covering both her and Devi. Fortunately for her at least, she was able to stand her ground, keeping herself still standing despite the weight.

"Crap, crap, crap! I'm so sorry, sweetie!"

To be fair, there was no way to tell that that was going to happen. Again, things always had a habit of going against the plan. Still, Devi was strong. She could just free them with all her strength, right? Rip the net apart with those bare hands, hopefully quietly?

Devi did what she was told, offering as best of assistance as she could while @Aika dealt with the lock picking. In times past, she would've just kicked the door wide open, but that would have always made a lot of noise, and making a lot of noise was something they were trying to avoid at this moment in time. When the ravishing rogue succeeded in her task and the alarms did not ring, Devi heaved a sigh of relief. She did not doubt Aika, despite fearing the worst.

"Good job, darling. Now let's go inside and get that egg."

But Devi had every right to fear the worst. The 5-foot-by-10-foot section of the floor immediately north of the museum's front doors apparently contained a pressure plate hidden under the welcome rug. It was a trap that was no doubt only activated while the museum was closed to the public, as they did step on the same rug during the gala and did not get welcomed by a weighted net from the ceiling.

"Don't worry! I got this!"

But Devi was not going to get humiliated by some stupid net. Still standing her ground despite the weight of the net, the fiery fighter easily grabbed the whole thing and threw it off of them, careful not to make too much sound. It wasn't the first time Devi had a net thrown all over herself. She knew it wouldn't be the last.

With a cheeky grin, she gave Aika a wink before gesturing for her to press on and giving her back the pass. The curator's office was supposed to be around here somewhere, wasn't it?

Aika heaved a sigh of relief when @Devi managed to free them from the weighted net. Of course, the fiery fighter would. Aika did not have any doubts that Devi wouldn't be able to free them, to save her butt from the mistake, to un-trap them both. Not one bit.

"My hero!"

Aika gave Devi a quick smooch. With the alarm, the front doors, and the trap already taken care of, they had no further reason to stay at the grand entrance. Swiftly, the ravishing rogue swam, so to speak, toward the right side of the room. Well, right of the entrance. Her eyes wandered ever so quickly, going through the rooms there to see which one was the curator's office. The more information they had, the better.

There were three rooms to the right, just as the Professor had told them. And just as the Professor told them, Aika found the southernmost one, the one closest to the entrance, to be the one that should be the curator's home away from home!

Once again bypassing the alarms, this one on the door, using the curator's own pass, Aika managed to open said door for the two of them. The first thing they saw was the solid oak desk standing on a plush carpet in the center of the office. In the southeast corner, a strange, human-sized doll was posed in an elaborate silk dress.

Aika scoffed at the toy and immediately went for the desk, hoping to find something useful there. Unfortunately for them, before she could even reach the desk, something swiped at her. Fortunately for her, she was quick enough to dodge it, having noticed that something move toward her. Rolling backward, she squinted at her attacker, realizing that it was in fact the doll.

"Huh. I guess playtime's never over. Darling, if you please?"

Aika gestured for Devi to take care of the doll, so she could swipe all the useful things on the curator's desk. Once the ravishing rogue was done, of course, she'd join in the fight. If Devi hasn't taken care of the doll all by herself yet, that is! She usually does take care of fights alone rather easily.

Ah, so the giant doll was some sort of security measure? Devi would have never thought of something like that! Sure, a giant suit of armor, maybe, or some sort of stone statue, but a stupid doll that made you look like a dumb child? That was pretty brilliant! You dress a threat into something stupid, all anyone would see is the stupid, which makes for a great way to surprise them, much like Devi and @Aika were both now.

"Don't you worry, darling. I'll make quick work of this ugly thing! Go and check that desk!"

As soon as the doll tried to move toward Aika, Devi intercepted it with a fiery punch in the gut. They were trying to be as quiet as possible, so the fiery fighter toned down the flames and the explosions. The strike sent the doll reeling a few steps back, but it remained standing, seemingly infuriated by Devi's attack. In retaliation, it threw its own punch at the fiery fighter, which Devi blocked by putting her fists up in front of her face like they were in a boxing match. Despite her guard being up, Devi still felt the power behind the attack.

"Dang, you can throw a punch, can't you? This should be fun!"

Devi smirked, excited to go one on one with this new enemy, a creature she has never fought before. At least not dressed in that way. She's fought animated statues and moving suits of armor but never a giant doll before. Never in this game, anyway. There's always something new for everyone, huh?

With @Devi taking care of the monster doll guardian thing, Aika quickly headed for the desk to rummage through the useful things she could find. The ravishing rogue tried to do so as hastily as she could, not wanting to leave the fiery fighter on her own. Sure, Devi could probably take that thing down alone anyway, but Aika would rather not take that chance. They were partners, and that meant they had to do things together, especially fight weird monster dolls or whatever.

"Come on, come on! What's here that we could use?"

Aika let out an ecstatic aha! once she found something: It was under some loose paperwork, a document displaying the guards' after-hours patrol routes, definitely the most useful thing she could have found. With that information, they'd find it much easier to avoid the aforementioned guards. Devi might like fighting anything and everything, but all that brawling could slow them down. Their main priority was retrieving the egg. The rest was noise.

"I found something! You still good over there, sweetie?"

Aika quickly pocketed the document she found, stowing it in her person. Then she rushed back, hoping to join Devi's fight. Two heads were always better than one. Two fists? Or more precisely, two bodies tag-teaming a single monster? Now that was way better than one.

Catching a glimpse of @Aika working hard on the desk, Devi found herself smirking at the doll defender, eager for another fight. With that thought, the fiery fighter rushed the animated toy, throwing a punch at its face. However, before Devi could even come close, the doll suddenly took out a plushie sword from its back and swung at the fighter. Devi wheezed as the weapon caught her off guard, sending her back. She held her face, where the sword had connected, and stared daggers at the doll.

"Oh, that's how you want to do this, huh? Tired of the punching, maybe thought I was winning on that front, so you had to introduce a weapon into our fisticuffs? Well... Bad news for you, buddy... I also have a sword!"

Devi took out her own sword in retaliation, definitely larger than the toy's, and once more, rushed into the fray. The doll swung at her again, but this time, the fiery fighter parried the would have been blow and immediately followed it up with an explosive slash on the doll's chest that sent it back as well. An eye for an eye? It teetered on its feet, though, Devi's attack clearly beyond what it had expected. This gave the fiery fighter a confidence boost, and she grinned from ear to ear.

"Still good, darling! I'm enjoying every moment of this!"

She was! Even though the doll was standing its ground, defiantly so, Devi wasn't hating on it. Far from it. She was actually enjoying their doubt. She had been worried she wouldn't be able to kick some ass during this job, and lo and behold, the doll had saved her entertainment. Now to actually take it down...

Thwack! Aika would have been all right with just letting @Devi have her fun, but the fluffed-up security golem decided to ruin the moment by throwing a vase in her direction. That signaled to the ravishing rogue that fun's over.

Without even hesitating for a second, but after checking her arm post-shielding the rest of her body with it against the porcelain decoration, Aika took out her bow and let loose an arrow of hardened water. As soon as the projectile struck the doll, it seeped throw, bursting quietly from the inside and pouring out not unlike a reverse water balloon attack.

"Sorry about that, sweetie! We still need to remain as quiet as possible. Thanks for softening it up, though."

Once that was dealt with, Aika showed the fiery fighter what she had found. Together, they studied the guards' routes until a better, much stealthier plan came to them. With the very useful document in tow, their mission was now much easier. All they had to do was avoid the guards, break into the egg's display, take it for themselves, and then break back out of the museum. Easy peasy!

"You ready?"

Aika gave her partner a grin. The rest was going to be history. Just like the egg. Just like everything else in this museum. History well paid.

Devi chuckled, loosening up when @Aika stole the kill right under her pretty little nose. If it had been someone else, she would've yelled at them, gone mad, and maybe even tried to fight the sneaky little bugger. But it was the ravishing rogue, and for all of their differences, Devi could never get that mad with her. Not when she knew how to cool her head. Among other things.

"Of course... Always ready, darling! Let's go, then."

Quietly, they both made their way out of the Curator's Office, having already gotten what they came there for. It was a very useful detour, which made their movements easier and their sneaking much more efficient than without the document Aika had taken from that room. Moving to the north, they avoided the two guards patrolling the grand entrance. Once they reached the museum shops, however, they decided to take a few moments to regain and replenish their health bars.

"Historian's Gifts... Archaeologist's Spade... These guys are at least committing to the theme."

Departing the display racks filled with tunics, bandannas, books, and bric-a-brac, most emblazoned with the museum's logo, especially the plush benches that not only served as general seating areas but also as places to park their butts for their quick rest, the couple sneaked their way up the grand staircase to the second floor. What immediately greeted them were the intact skeletons of several large prehistoric monsters on display, including the museum's most famous display, at least according to Jonas: the beautifully preserved body of an allosaurus, its leathery skin appearing supple to the touch.

Aika simply smirked at @Devi's comment, finding it amusing. While her partner gawked at the skeletons on display, the ravishing rogue sneakily took to the informational placard that was next to the dinosaur, which explained that it died millennia ago and was naturally preserved. Her eyes soon glossed over the display cases along the room's walls holding fossils of other ancient local predators. At least they honored their theme very well over on this floor. Not that they didn't on the first one. It was a museum thing, after all.

Catching sight of the patrolling guards, Aika immediately ducked her head, pulling Devi down on her behind a display case. Once their would-have-been adversaries were gone, she gave the fiery fighter a wink and slithered out from under her, sneaking her way close to the vent that she had seen earlier during the gala. It would be a safe and quick way into the wing where their target was. If her calculations were correct, the air vent leading to the egg's pedestal was around 3-foot-high, 3-foot-wide, and 5-foot-deep. More importantly, it was 10 feet above the floor.

"Sweetie, can you give me a little boost over here?"

Devi would be able to do so without much effort. She was extremely, physically impressive. A quick boost wouldn't require much from her, and Aika surmised that she would find it much easier to go down...from the other side of the vent and into the other room's floor. Like a cat. She's done that numerous times. For now, she just needed to get up on the vent then pull Devi over with her, so they can both get to where they needed to be.

With a playful smirk, Devi assisted @Aika so she could reach the vent. It was an easy enough fit, though a bit distracting. The fiery fighter could never resist the ravishing rogue, and this remained the same in this situation, with Devi stealing a glimpse of Aika as she pulled herself up into the vent. When the latter offered her assistance in turn, the fiery fighter declined with a smile and a shake of her head. Instead, she urged her partner to move on, knowing she could follow her on her own.

"Go ahead, darling! I'll be right behind you!"

And so she was. Devi simply jumped as high as she could, which was effortless on her part, and grabbed hold of the edges of the event. Next, she pulled herself up and inside the vent, again with less effort on her part, and quickly found herself right behind Aika's, well, behind. Devi grinned as she relished the amazing view, the pair making their way into the room where they needed to be. The next part would just be as easy, Devi believed.
