Surprised (Can't act this Cycle)

With her arm hooked on a basket, Kyanna wandered across the paths of forests of Western Brisshal. She was on her way to Finweald, the supposed capital of Kingdom of Astorea, according to a few players. It was far more populated, which would increase Kyanna's chances of finding her mother considerably, on top of being a better spot for her to advance in the game.

As she went through it, she knew by the sight of the sun going down that she would eventually need to stop to camp, and with such a thing in mind, she was already taking her time to collect a few ingredients for a dinner. In her basket, a mix of edible herbs, fruits, and some mushrooms were rather plentiful, but the young witch wished a bit more, especially since half of her gatherings would be used as magical and spell components.

When she seemed to have consider her basket was filled enough, a section of brimming mushrooms caught her attention.

Kyanna blinked, turning toward it and focusing her sight on them with an overwhelming curiosity, looking around and then smiling before hopping closer toward it, muttering a quiet enchantment that made the vegetation easier to be walked through.

Nearing the mushrooms, Kyanna giggled and muttered to them. "Aren't you a pretty?" She gently brushed her index on the top of a magenta mushroom. "I wonder what the Investigation Mode will tell about you..." Kyanna said with a smile, already plucking the mushroom out before she heard a whisper coming from it.

'Above and behind you'

The witch frowned, listening to a brief click before widening her eyes and looking upwards, seeing a large metal cage suddenly falling, managing to notice it early enough for her to squeak, jump and roll out the way while her basket scattered across the grass along with its contents, and her hat getting stuck between the bars of the cage.

Kyanna winced, getting on her knees and summoning her staff to use it as a support while shifting her gaze toward the cage, and then toward the culprits of that attempt to restrain her:

Two, four... Eight goblins, cackled devilishly while aiming with crude bows, and holding clubs and rusty blades.

Swallowing, Kyanna stood on her feet, with the magenta mushroom being held on her hand that had dropped the basket. "W-Wait, wait! I'm not here to fight, I'm just collecting some food!" She pointed at the fallen basket, trying to communicate with the goblins, that didn't seem to listen or care for her words before charging in with their weapons.

-15 HP from retal
-14 HP (7lp*2) from goblins

It's been some time since the dark swordsman had navigated his way to the beginner's area. After being being carried in Tertus Valley by a group of high-ranked players, Kirius quickly learned that Terrasphere was a ruthless game. Without a single in-game tutorial or a single NPC to guide new players along, the game actively pushed to kill newbies. As such, he needed to be careful and approach the dangerous world with great respect, for he neither had the skills or power to take on the challenges the game has put in front of them. He needed to grind and he needed to do it efficiently, which was why he trekked all the way back to the beginner's area in the first place.

While practicing his sword art in a grove, the raven-haired youth suddenly picked up on the sound of metal clanging on the ground, immediately putting him into a state of alert.

Must be those damn goblins… he thought to himself as his grip tightened. If goblin was involved, it would have been a party.

Who's the unlucky sap this time? After spending some time in the area, Kirius had seen more than his share of oblivious starcalled getting absolutely obliterated by goblin hunting parties. Every single time thus far, Kirius was not skilled enough to intervene so he didn't, hoping that they had lives to burn through still.

That day was different, however. His blade felt sharp and the ambush victim wasn't instantly gibbed, which meant that he was given an opening. With a slightly looser grip on his sword, Kirius disappeared into the foliage.

Right after the goblin archers unleashed a volley of arrows toward Kyanna from their vantage point up on a tree, Kirius spun out from the shadow with an agile spinning attack that cleaved through one of the goblin's heads like butter. The swing's momentum set Kirius up for a follow-up slash, which would have opened up an adjacent goblin's neck had he not blocked the thirsting edge in time.

"Tch, almost," Kirius clicked his tongue as the riposte threw him off the branch and down into a bush that cushioned his fall.

While the goblin's party was in disarray, Kirius dashed toward the dark-haired girl.

"Hey, keep your eyes open and your mouth shut or you're going to end up on their dinner table," he said.

Kyanna's eyes grew wide open at the sight of the barrage of arrows being released at her direction, barely giving her time to take cover on the cage that nearly had got her locked, albeit it wasn't enough, getting her leg scrapped with the arrows that snapped and went through the bars of her cover, making her yelp and hold her leg.

"Wh-What?" She blinked, gazing up to the boy that had suddenly appeared, already slashing the head of a goblin off.

The sheer violence made her stomach twist slightly, and she half opened her mouth to protest, but his warnings caught her mind and interrupted her words first, making her hold back her protests for a moment, holding her staff and pointing toward the goblins, muttering a quiet non-sensical incantation-

"Fungi Funga Fungles!"

Suddenly, an ill smell spreaded across the area, enough to cease the breathing of those that were more sensible, followed by strange dangerously glowing mushrooms growing on the hostile goblins.

"Aim for the mushrooms!" Kyanna warned, after putting herself in a dangerous positioning.

Upon impact on the mushrooms, they would implode their hosts, causing a severe damage upon the targetted goblins.

Vulnerable
-30* HP from retal
-20 HP (5lp*4) from goblins

The goblins are crafty, using every advantage afforded to them by the naturally obscured forest. With the green menacing being native to Brisshal, it was a given that they would employ such tactics.

Knowing that there was a giant target on his back, Kirius immediately changed direction during his dash toward Kyanna and rolled into a nearby bush to take some heat off of the dark-haired girl. Rather than hiding as he had suggested, she continued standing in the open and brazenly cast some kind of stinky fungal curse on the goblins she could see.

Kirius was taken aback, but rather than anger, he felt amused. He was amused at the fact that the oblivious girl had put them into such a difficult position since he couldn't possibly let the exploitive curse go to waste.

What a crazy chick, Kirius thought to himself. However, it was undeniable that he loved the challenge that had been presented to him. What kind of Shadow Lord would he be if he could not overcome such a hurdle?

Branding his sword, Kirius filled his lungs with air as he assumed a new sword stance before he disappeared in thin air, appearing in front of the two marked goblins running at Kyanna.

His sword lunged forward like a viper striking its prey. Two jabs through the mushroom curse brought the goblins down in less than a second.

The raven-haired youth swung his sword downward to clean the blood off of his blade, but before he could relax, he heard the sound of a thrown spear heading directly for his companion and immediately flicked his blade at the projectile in an attempt to ward it off. However, he was still not skilled enough to pull off such a feat and found himself paying for it, big time.

"Gggh-!" he grunted as the spear pierced the valley between his pec and bicep, ripping his tendon apart.

With the enemies lurking in the foliage and engaging in cowardly hit-and-run, it won't be long before They are overrun.

Kyanna may have underestimated the goblins when she decided to put herself in such a terrible position- And while it did give the young man the chance he needed to absolutely destroy a couple of goblins that were charging toward the girl, it wasn't enough for the green ambushers to flee just yet.

Taking a step back, Kyanna breathed a relieved sigh, casting a glance at her companion and almost smiling and slipping grateful words, but those were unfortunately interrupted by an incoming projectile that startled the witch, who partially closed her eyes before noticing that the swordsman had taken the burden of pain on her place.

"H-Hey! Are you--" Her eyes grew wide, and the bushes began hustling, hinting at another wave of approaching goblins, with a rope net being flung in her direction and nearly entangling her. Thankfully, she was swift to dodge it, distancing herself until her back pressed against Kirius's.

Frowning, Kyanna squeezed the magenta mushroom and tossed it upwards, swaying her staff and thrusting it toward the fungi. "Giganto!" Deforming for a moment, the mushroom twisted and abruptly erupted into a big myconid, landing in front of the swordsman.

❰ Witch Minions - Myconid ❱

As soon as the goblins revealed themselves from the bushes, the myconid shoved its appendages on the face of the one that tried to attack Kirius, slamming it against the ground to crack its skull on a rock, swinging it, and then tossing it with all its might against another goblin, this one that came toward Kyanna.

However, the goblins continued to come, with one last bowsman and two fighters approaching.

Back-to-back with the dark-haired witch with blood oozing out of his wound, the pressure was slowly getting into the boy, so much so that he began to let out an audible chuckle that slowly transition into full-on laughter. To anyone looking at Kirius at the time, allies and enemies alike, they must have thought that he had lost his mind.

"This setup is almost too perfect, ahaha..." he muttered between his laughter as he brushed a hand over his sweat-laden face.

"This kind of adversity is how you improve at the game. It's got to take at least this level of threat for one to reach greater heights," he continued.

Turning his head to the side Kirius flashed his partner a smile, "I didn't catch your name, but thanks."

He then turned toward the silent enemies in the bushes and raised his sword, pointing at them, all the while keeping the unhinged smile on his face. "And a special thanks to you all for serving as my stepping stone to greatness. I will depart your soul as quick and painless as I can."

Kirius opened his UI and turned off both Auto Assist and Pain Limiter. The debilitating pain hit him all at once, and got even worse when he cut the spear near the base.

"GHRRR-" he groaned, almost regretting it, but what's life without a little risk?

He then turned into a black blur the moment Kyanna summoned her myconid to counter an incoming attack.

Kirius made a mad dash toward the source of the spear, his sword raised up to his face. The moment he reached the bush and spotted the goblins on the ground, he turned his heel and lowered his sword, readying a special attack, only for the third goblin to catch him flat-footed with a net. Fortunately for Kirius, he had already started the special attack and not even being hindered by the net could stop the carnage he was about to unleash.

HOWLING RAGE!

The force of the attack decimated both of the goblins who couldn't even fight back before they were chopped up into little meat parcels. The lucky goblin who managed to avoid the attack immediately took off without looking back, he wasn't going to be someone's grinding mob that day.

"Hnnn… ouch!" Kirius groaned as he slumped into the massacred pile of goblin chunks.

"You alive?" the boy called out to his partner, unable to move an inch. His limbs refused to exert any more energy than they already had.

The laughter from the boy startled Kyanna for a moment, side-glancing at him as she tried to keep her attention on the enemies. "Wh-Why are you..." But before she could question his maddening laugh, the speech and then grateful words from the swordsman interrupted her. Making her puzzled, yet returning his smile with a faint one from herself.

Yes, no matter how hard things were, one could still smile and feel confident. And even if the boy's confidence was unhinged, it was his own way to express it.

Kyanna returned her attention to the goblins, tightening her grip around her broomstick staff and bracing herself for a more dangerous clash, until her companion rushed forward in reckless abandon. Her eyes grew wide, seeing him throw himself into danger and receiving strikes that were nothing short of fatal.

His strike was just as fierce, sweeping the danger in front of them and finally bringing an eerie silence back to the woods. Standing in a frozen position for a moment, looking at the boy's body in mild horror, a relief washed deep in her chest when she heard his voice. He was alive. Good.

Stumbling and wincing, feeling the pain stinging since she had turned her Pain Limiter off ever since she stepped into the game, she kneeled next to the boy, regardless of the gruesome sight that surrounded him. "Y-Yeah, I am alive. Thanks to you." She smiled gratefully, but her expression soon faltered into a mix of guilt and worry, seeing the severe wounds he had on him.

Reaching for the net, she carefully withered it away with a fungal corruption, then holding the boy to try and take him out of the pile of goblins. "Can... Can you stand..? Can you move any of your body? Anything is broken?" She showered him with questions, with her voice cracking slightly as she felt a lump forming in her throat, along with tears. He was in a horrible state, but it should be fixable, right?

"One of them escaped, if they decide to come back with reinforcement it won't be good." Her lips pursed, and with a free hand, she carefully brushed her palm on the most dangerous wounds, attempting to soothe them with regenerative fungi, that, unlike the others, wasn't stinky and cold, instead feeling cozy and numbing.

The soothing fungal wasn't exactly his idea of things he would imagine would heal him, but alas they eased the terrible pain he was in. When he assessed the state of his body by attempting to raise his arm, the limb was unresponsive. He tried with his other arm, then his whole upper body, and finally both of his legs, but not a single one moved so much as an inch.

"Mmm... I can't even move my arm, so standing is not going to be possible. I completely miscalculated how much damage that skill was going to deal to me," he replied to her question in a matter-of-factly tone.

"That straggler might be getting reinforcement as we speak. Not to mention that it's going to take you a lot of time to heal these wounds. You should get away from here. I'm good to die at least two more times. So it's not that big of a deal," he said.

"You can just buy me lunch or something the next time we meet in Finweald."

These were bad news for sure. Wounds were at least recovered to a point they were no longer a life or long-lasting danger, but until strength came back to his body, it would take a long while.

However, his suggestion was absurd, and Kyanna couldn't help but scowl.

"Eh?! As if I would leave you to die in here after you rescued me. Are you crazy?" Kyanna said, almost in a scolding tone before standing, quickly going for the cage that was used as a trap at first to snatch her big witch hat back and slide it into her inventory before turning back to the boy and approaching him.

"The lunch we will get is to recover our energies after this, not as some thanks gift for you becoming a martyr." She sighed, taking his arms around her shoulders, and then adjust him on her back for a moment before taking a deep breath and allowing her corruptive magic spread across her body.

The fungal layer coated her arms and legs, strengthening her joints and muscles that allowed her to lift the boy on her back with a grunt, despite their difference in height. "Alright... L-Let's hurry." There was some strain in her voice, but she rushed further regardless, trying to ignore her HP ticking down for every minute she tried to keep up with the overpowering buff.

Regardless if he would protest, or stay quiet, Kyanna would slip an introduction.

"My name... Is Kyanna. What are yours?"

Kirius did, in fact, not protested. There was an expression of surprise that landed on his face. Maybe it was a small sample bias, but he had met a lot of stand-up people in the supposed death game. There was something about the game that pulled people together and encourage a sense of cooperation not seen in other games, or even the real world for that matter.

And so, Kirius let the girl get him up to his feet and help him along.

"Kirius," he said.

Moments later, his eyes shifted to the side as he muttered quietly, "Thanks."

. . .

The two tottered along the Blue Rapid, seeking for civilization that would shield them from Brisshal's savagery. It would take them a long while before they saw Fort Worth from the distance. By this point, Kirius had stabilized enough to stand and walk by himself with a bit of support.

The Fort was massive and highly fortified. There were archers on every post, keeping tab on every speck of green in the woods.

Kirius was a bit wary about approaching the Fort and decided to hold Kyanna back inside a foliage.

"If we were ambushed by a band of goblins, that means that there is an increased in goblin activity in the area, which also means that the guys on the wall are going to be on edge. I don't think we should approach them head on unless you're prepared to cut down some arrows heading our way," he said.

The return of the introduction, followed by the grateful words, brought a smile to Kyanna's lips despite everything that had happened so far. "Kirius, huh? It is nice to meet you--" She said genuinely, continuing to carry until the boy felt comfortable enough to get back to his feet.

She continued to support him, being the crutch he needed while venturing past the woods, until finally a glimpse of civilization could be seen.

Her eyes grew in a naive hope, nearly rushing ahead before Kirius held her back, making her instinctively hide behind the foliage. Her mouth half opened to ask what was wrong, until he gave his reasoning, making her frown. "You... You are right." She said, shifting her glance toward the fort, and feeling grateful that she was held back before she had become a swiss cheese by accident.

"I think this may be just a matter of yelling we are here though?" Kyanna said, clearing her throat and looking toward the fort.

"HEY!" She called, making at least a handful of archers wary instantly, some even a bit jumpy.

Kyanna rubbed the back of her head awkwardly, before continuing with a loud voice. "We are hurt! We've just dealt with some goblins, and... Well!"

The archers muttered between each other, until one finally spoke up-

"Show yourselves, with empty hands on sight!" One ordered, with an assertive tone.
