Once Jake figured out his usual buttons were more likely to earn glares than gold he beat a retreat, waiting for her funk to subside. But it had persisted, and though she didn't seem open to theorizing, it didn't take a psychologist to put things together.

And if his precious Ice was at risk, then he was going to have to adjust some plans. The last thing Jake wanted was to have her break on him.
