Personality
Most people would call Vincent Davies a hard working family man. His coworkers would call him stern, forgiving, and always putting the well being of his friends above his own. His partner would call him a wild-card, willing to do almost anything to solve a case. His Ex-Wife would call him a kind, gentle, loving soul. Until she called him absent. His daughter called him a spy, because she thought he was cool.
Vincent always thought of himself as a bit of a nerd. Fiercely intelligent, his mind is always working on one problem or another, even to his own detriment. But it was discovering an innate drive to protect that changed the course of his life after he got married. The need to change the world, to clean it up, to make it better for his future family in a way that robotics couldn't.
Inside the game Valmont, is Vincent's personality writ large. He doesn't have the stigma of position, title, or law. He has no face to save, or reputation to protect. For the most part, he just wants to help the other players, and keep them alive as long as possible. For the rest, he has a deep well of anger boiling just below the surface. And a whirlwind drive to find information. Something. Anything. That will make it go away.
Positive: Attentive, Driven, Kind, Protective, Quiet
Negative: Angry, Vengeful, Destructive, Confused, Obsessive
Background
Born Vincent Charles Davies during the turn of the century Vincent found himself enraptured with the progression of technology. The speed at which new technology emerged and evolved, all while still being made of the same basic parts. As most boys with a whirlwind of imagination and creativity he found himself drawn to video games, chess clubs, TCG’s, 40K, and even joined a group of friends playing through various D&D modules. When that wasn’t enough, he learned programming and development in order to make new games for him and his friends based on their characters. He grew up. Graduated. Applied to a tech school to learn the art of systems development, AI design, robotics, outlets for his skills and passions.
What he didn’t expect would be something that would change the course of his life. Like many people, he fell in love. A whirlwind romance with a woman that became the girl of his dreams. Alice Whyte. In her green eyes he found the primal need of many men. The need to protect. The need to build a wall around all he holds dear, and guard it with his life. He finished his schooling, got his diploma and certificates, and before the ink had time to dry had applied to the Police Academy, determined to do what he could. It worked. The courses were easy, comparatively speaking, and it only took a little effort to get into shape.
Before long he was walking beats, arresting criminals, and earning promotions and accolades. Far from famous, but well known among his peers. He had a reputation for being stern, but fair, even to those he was arresting. He never got angry, instead he dealt with confrontation with a chilling calm and steady hand. The only people that really knew about his deep passions were his wife, Alice; Partner, Duke; And the love of his life, his daughter, Vanessa. Even after becoming part of the Cyber Crimes division, most of the guys at the station just knew him as a handy tech, not that he went home on weekends and painted figurines with his daughter.
It’s with his daughter this all starts. A budding nerd. A computer whiz. She got a copy of Terrasphere from somewhere, and hid the illegal game from her father so he wouldn’t have to worry about duty vs family. Who knows how long she played. Maybe a day, maybe a year. But when Vincent came home to find her dead in her bed, VR headset on, his world ended. He’d heard about it, of course, unsolved cases that build up in backlogs and folders. But now they have taken from him what he holds most dear. Everyone could see the toll it took. He threw away his marriage. Pulled every case on it he could find. All dead ends. Obsession settled in. Depression settled in deeper.
