Personality

Both in and out of the game Akemi/Mizuki has a strong tendency to focus on whatever task is at hand, sparing little effort in trying to guarantee success regardless of whether the task is easy or difficult. This sometimes causes her to be neglectful of others as her mind gets preoccupied. That said, she does also try her best to get along with everyone she interacts with, even though her social clumsiness forces her to rely on politeness and etiquette, making it harder for her to get really close to people unless they make the first move. Those who do make the effort will find, however, that she is very willing to put in effort for others and try to make them feel at ease, even if she isn't always as good at it.

In the physical world, Akemi radiates confidence, secure in the knowledge that due to her good education and practical attitude she can deal with most issues thrown her way. With her no-nonsense focus on her career, she is a very reliable woman, although recently she has begun to show more interest in activities unrelated to work, primarily working out and looking up information on Terrasphere, a game which managed to pull a business-like woman into the world of fantasy. During the time that Terrasphere was offline, she also began to look into programming and developed a passion for camping.

In the virtual world, Mizuki is less secure, exercising a lot of caution when in situations that she isn't familiar with. She lacks the certainty and expertise that she has in the real world, so her desire for success requires her to try hard and consider all possibilities. When she started out she was so concerned with being caught off guard that it hindered her effectiveness, but now that she has become more accustomed to the world she has regained some of the strength of her physical self, although in the virtual world it has manifested itself as a kind of brashness, refusing to accept defeat as she makes her way onwards. As time progresses she has also become more willing to adopt a more savage and ferocious attitude when pressured or when on the hunt, which at its most extreme can make her appear like a different person.

Positive: Capable, Confident, Dedicated, Supportive
Negative: Awkward, Domineering, Irritable, Stubborn

Background

Akemi was born the child of an American businessman who encountered her Japanese mother during a business trip, holding a long-distance relationship with frequent visits before they got married in Japan and Akemi's mother returned with her father to the United States. It didn't take long after before Akemi was born, healthy as anything but due to a genetic mutation possessing a green eye and a blue eye, officially named heterochromia. While not a threat to her health her unusual eyes did result in some bullying when she was little, which resulted in her turning away from most people her age. As she grew up she studied hard and got exceptional grades, partially because her father insisted that she should try to aim high, but also because she didn't have a lot of friends to play with.

Her high grades and good working ethic allowed her to enroll in a high-class university and get herself a degree in business, after which she gained a job in her father's firm, showing herself competent and focused, earning the respect of her father's colleagues as she proved that any claims of nepotism were unfounded. Akemi herself, however, found herself wishing that she had spent more time having fun with others instead of spending most of her youth preparing for a job. It wasn't that she was unhappy with the job or her current life, but she still remembered that before the bullying drove her away from other children she enjoyed playing with them. She wasn't going to change her current life, but the thoughts still lingered in her head until one day she suddenly received an email from the mysterious Terrasphere which she knew the government was trying to learn more about. Under normal circumstances she would immediately have reported it, but... In the end, she decided to keep it to herself, because for her it was possibly her last chance to experience a different life. In Terrasphere nobody would know it was her if she did something silly...

During the creation of her character, the most difficult part was choosing the eyes of her character, since she still remembered how they had influenced her fate when she was little. She had overcome her dislike of her own eyes because when she grew up people had become less and less demeaning about them: in fact, these days it seemed like it made people intrigued more than anything else. Eventually, she decided to give her character heterochromatic eyes as well, to show that she wasn't doing this to escape from her own life, but to experience another. Changing her eyes to be monochromatic would have felt like a sign of cowardice or betrayal to her.

After having experienced many things which would have been unthinkable in the real world, the abrupt disappearance of Terrasphere left Akemi with a need for adventure and excitement which she had a hard time meeting. She tried other VRMMORPGs, but the government's restrictions meant they lacked the immersion: it didn't feel real, they didn't make her heart pound as Terrasphere had done. Of course, the news that people had died from playing the game also left her disturbed, and she developed an interest in programming in an attempt to better understand this game, this alternate reality, which had enraptured her so but which also managed to present a real danger to her real self.

She never stopped trying to see if she could enter Terrasphere once more, even as her life went on, but when finally the door opened once again she was torn. Was it worth risking her life and well-being to feel the thrill of the hunt again? Wouldn't it be better to accept Terrasphere as the miraculous experience it had been and move on? Her family and friends would have told her to leave well enough alone, had she talked to them about it. She knew what they would say. But she couldn't deny that she still longed for it, to be Ueno Mizuki once again.

Whether she made the right choice, or if she even had a choice, is something only time will tell.

Mizuki's specialty is to embrace the primal nature of the caenis race and hunt like a wild beast. Her Martial Arts grant her exceptional physical ability and allow her to fight without relying on any weapons which aren't part of her own body. Using Metamorph combined with Beast Arts she further enhances her physical abilities by giving herself hardened claws, fangs, and augmented muscles. Most commonly she'll adopt more lupine features, sometimes even fully transforming into a large wolf to pounce upon her prey and either cripple or execute them. If circumstances require it she'll also transform into other animals, most notably a sparrow if she needs to fly.

As a huntress, Mizuki is also well-versed in finding and tracking prey, and keeping an eye out for other predators. Her Amplified Sound makes her alert to her surroundings even as she uses Amplified Smell to either hunt down prey, or avoid danger. In locations with lower light intensity, she instinctively grants herself night vision using Beast Arts-based Metamorph. However, even without light, she can reliably sense her surroundings with her other senses. The combination of Beast Arts and Nature Magic results in her having a comprehensive understanding of the natural world, as well as the ability to communicate with other lifeforms which makes her excel in areas with high biomass and diversity. Conversely, she's less effective in areas which are hostile to all life.

While not her primary focus, Mizuki can use Beast Arts to cooperate with other animals, specifically wolves. As wolves are pack hunters they're suitable for this kind of teamwork, where Mizuki can direct their movements using both her Beast Arts and her Primal Aura. The fact that she shares the senses of wolves, including their High Frequency, means that this teamwork benefits from communication in two directions, rather than Mizuki merely handing out orders.

Mizuki's Nature Magic is primarily meant for healing herself and her allies, as well as supporting her other abilities. By infusing herself and others with nature's power she can boost speed and strength, or form a protective skin made of durable bark. In a fix, she can form simple tools and structures out of wood grown either from the ground or reagents she carries with her. Her preferred form of plant manipulation, however, is to use roots and thorny vines to trip and entangle her prey.

Overall, Mizuki can be considered a primalist and a naturalist, thriving in the wilds and surviving in harsh conditions due to her adaptability. However, embracing this life has also given her a savage side, and in the midst of hunting or fighting her behaviour can become much wilder, spurred onwards by bloodthirsty lunacy which she developed after devouring the heart of a pureblood Lunatic Princess and inheriting some of her traits. Her Hemomancy allows her to control her own blood and that of others, and combined with her Amplified Sound and Amplified Smell it's nearly impossible for living targets to escape her notice, as she can hear their heartbeat from far away and smell even the smallest drop of blood.

Aside from enhancing her tracking prowess Mizuki's Hemomancy also means that a successful hunt rewards her with a means to quickly replenish her stamina by consuming the blood of her prey. This means she's both capable and willing to expend both energy and blood if she's confident she can rejuvenate herself with blood afterwards.

By combining her Hemomancy with her Nature Magic she can use both her own blood and that of others to quickly grow various plants without expending her stamina, and the more blood she has available the bigger and sturdier her plants become. These plants can be recognised by their sanguine tint, as well as their tendency to be more vicious than their unblooded counterparts. Whereas Mizuki's usual roots formed with Nature Magic alone are meant to entangle and restrain enemies the roots which are bolstered with blood often grow sharp thorns to tear into the target.
