Personality

He was quick.

He's sure of that. He was quick- quick to act, quick to run, quick to sacrifice what mattered, quick to drop his gold on a pretty new piece that caught his eye. Quick to kick a pebble. Not quick to apologize.

Rook never apologizes.

He doesn't apologize, because he did nothing wrong. Rook never does anything wrong. He is too QUICK for consequences. They slide off him like water off a Rook's back. He is lucky, also. Rook the Quick is friends with Lady Luck, because he always balances the scales.

Bad things happen to good people. Rook knows he is good people, too.

Rook is a character. He is searching for his teacher's sword. He will know it when he sees it, because it is so beautiful a thousand blackbirds wept when it was forged, and only he can wield it. But he is not impatient. He loves his new sword, Respiro. He loves silence. He loves taking action. He may not often speak, but Rook makes himself heard.

Rook is not here to watch. He is here to play. And he does, with childish, wonderous delight and deadly seriousness, with curiosity and whimsy, and with bitter suffering as well.

With four years in between, he has almost forgotten the scars at his throat from Titanius, where the remnants of dissonance wormed through his tender skin. He has forgotten, almost. It's been too long. Such a small trauma hardly bears remembering. Not compared to reality.

He is good at making maps.

He is good at following maps (but not orders).

He is good at making friends (but not following them).

He remembers who he was, and who he is, and is too QUICK to stop and wonder what he could be.

Positive: Selfless, Honorable, Innocent, Driven, Serious
Negative: Strange, Shy, Quiet, Disloyal, Impulsive

Background

Miquel has always been withdrawn. He suffered in his childhood from an oral-motor problem that made it difficult for him to learn to speak, preferring to communicate with his parents using gestures instead. He made some progress in speech therapy, but a traumatic experience with the neighborhood children caused him to shut down and stop talking entirely.

After his parents took him out of school, he seemed to recover from the experience, but never started speaking again. He loved reading. In his teen years he became fixated on knight and samurai stories, becoming obsessed with swordfights and traditional weapons. He studied religiously. He read everything, and when he finished, he started writing.

Hoping to take their 'special boy' out of his own head, his mamá got him VR.

He joined Terrasphere 1.0 when was 20 years old, and his world changed.

He found another side to himself, action and respite, inhale and exhale, silence and the silencer.

He saw towers be built, ancient legends slain, heroes born. He danced in caves with shield-maidens and gave his blade to a death-witch. He dreamed beneath forests of mushrooms. He got lost, time and time again, in an impossible, upside-down canyon. He took a chariot ride that soared too high, and crashed and burned like Icarus.

And one day, not in the game, he met a girl in a yellow dress, who offered him a slim little volume of poetry on the Day of the Book and the Rose and showed him there was still goodness in the world.

Miquel is different now.

Not much. In real life, he's slow to change. He's come out of his shell. Joined the community. Found a job at the bookstore. Stocks books with a faraway look in his eyes, helps carry crates of old novels up from the port, let his hair grow long.

His mamá is happy. His sisters are happy. Their silent spring has finally thawed, and their fears, it seemed, were for nothing. But Miquel bears a quiet sadness in his eyes, and a hardness. A resolve.

He has already seen the ending to Rook's story in his mind. He's already written it a thousand times. He's already imagined the possibilities, the hopes, the dreams that never came to fruition in the game. That's not the problem. The problem is him.

Rook and Miquel are not separate. No one can role-play without embracing the role. To function in the adult world, to make his family proud, he has to take up that mantle again. In real life. No swords or mask to hide behind.

...But he still won't speak a word.
