Personality
Iselda is everything Lena wishes she could be. Iselda Blackthorn exudes confidence like an aura, carrying herself with a frosty, intimidating poise. She uses her harsh appearance to her advantage, attempting to make her presence known from the moment she enters a room. Iselda has a strong belief in justice and fairness, demanding harsh punishment of anyone who violates laws or basic human decency. She is prone to grandiosity, often trying to work in "cool" quips or declarations when she fights. Her justice is rigid and difficult to sway, showing a worrying degree of stubbornness and inflexibility. She is quite intelligent and proud of that fact though lacks improvisational skill. Conversely, she is protective, loyal, and selfless in serving those she perceives as "just." Sometimes, cracks in the facade can be seen if someone manages to catch her off guard where she can be shown to be easily flustered and even "cute" depending on the context.
By contrast, Lena is shy and lacking in confidence but kind. She had very little belief in herself before Terrasphere but has a surprising well of determination that manifests in the desire to "change herself" through playing Iselda. Lena practically idolizes her sister and gave Iselda all the traits she wants to be from her sister but overexaggerated. It's quite obvious that Lena is a veteran in games of all types and this occasionally shows itself in Iselda.
Positive: Loyal, Intelligent, Caring
Negative: Self-deprecating, Naive, Insecure, Shy
Background
Lena is the daughter of a Japanese father and an American mother, born in the United States along with her older sister Lily. Her parents were tough but nurturing and supportive with a lifestyle that never left her wanting for anything. Lena had been shy from birth compared to her outgoing and charismatic sister, preferring her books and quietly playing with one or two friends. Unfortunately, this wasn't an easily accepted attitude among her peers and combined with her more outwardly Asian appearance, it was easy to isolate her as the "other," making her the subject of bullying. Of course, that just made her even more withdrawn and she quickly developed a poor opinion of herself, blaming her own inadequacies rather than the bullies for her suffering.
She found solace in games, TV, and movies, quickly becoming a stereotypical "nerd" who preferred to stay inside as she went through middle and high school. In high school, she also found her one outlet to the outside and her only true passion that couldn't be found in a screen: Fencing. While Lena was so physically inept that she had trouble catching a ball thrown directly into her arms, she displayed a surprising talent for the sport. She loved the cerebral nature of it and by the time she graduated, she was nationally ranked. It also had the added benefit of causing her bullying to slowly stop now that she wasn't a "complete loser" in one person's words.
The heroes of her stories became her role models, especially the most flamboyant and grandiose among them. They had a confidence and unflappable strength that Lena could only hope to match. She would often quietly practice her own heroic declarations in her room or give her fencing techniques "attack names." Perhaps the only sign that something wasn't quite right about her idolatry was her slow but steady trend toward liking the types of characters that pursued their ideals at any cost, taking down all obstacles in their path.
Lena saw many of those same traits in her older sister, Lily. If there was anyone Lena wished she could be like, it was her. It was her absolute self-assuredness that appealed to Lena as well as the fact that she was so charismatic that she seemed to effortlessly befriend anyone she wanted. She would often be sitting quietly in her room listening to the sounds of excited chatter between Lily and her friends... or "friends" at times.
Terrasphere was a game known to Lena for a long time, and she had been cautiously curious about it thanks to all the rumors. When a friend from one of her forums sent her an invitation, she spent an entire day being anxious about it. It was a brief flash of courage, but ultimately Lena saw this as a chance to change herself, to become more like Lily and show that she could be confident too. With those thoughts, she stepped into an entirely new world.
