Personality
Amyl is perhaps one of the most personable people you will meet in your life. All it takes is a connection, a glance, and he will be in your face, talking, laughing, and scheming with you before you can figure out where he came from. And he'll feel like your long-time friend, someone that you lost contact with, but that you enjoyed spending time with when you got the chance to. His gentile nature, the smiles, and the gentlemanly way he offers to pay for something is sure to catch anyone (read: everyone) off guard.
It's a shame that this is a facade and it's the one that works the best for him. It allows him to slip his grubby fingers into purses and bags and satchels where they don't belong, to pilfer what he needs to make it to another day. When challenged, he will immediately back down, explain how sorry he was, and blame his actions on his...condition. But these are words that he's practiced to himself while sitting on the toilet and the accompanying expressions have been manufactured down to the flare of his nostrils in the mirror.
Some would say that he acts in this manner because he doesn't care, but they would be incorrect. Amyl does care...about himself. He will do whatever is necessary for him to succeed, to get ahead, to be as comfortable as possible. And for him to experience another dopamine hit, another thrilling surge of living life just on the edge.
Positive: Articulate, Confident, Clever
Negative: Hedonistic, Egocentric, Obsessive
Background
Ever since he was young, Andrew has always been the one to take the gamble. If another kid challenged him and told him that he couldn't do something, he wanted to prove them wrong, but he also wanted to take their money while he did it. And if the odds were against him, the greater the triumph felt when he came out on top. Even when he didn't, chalking up the loss to bad luck or a rigged system, he still got the hit, that warm spike, that made him want to chase the next gamble.
This outlook on life set him up for a very troubling childhood. He was in and out of detention at school, always having run-ins with the police, only to be diagnosed with depression and ADHD. The medicine didn't work and surely didn't help, so they would increase the dosage, thinking that he just needed something stronger. He didn't. When he turned 18, he moved across the country to get away from his parents, his doctors, and the temptations of his old life.
The temptations, however, followed him, and now with the gleaming lights of Las Vegas as his backdrop, those demons gorged on his every mistake. He couldn't hold on to a consistent job and he often found himself switching careers every six to eight months. Some months he would hit big and some get-rich-quick scheme would pay out in his favor and other months, he'd be shifting through the garbage cans down the strip, looking for something to fill the hole in his stomach.
During a good month, he got his VR system and the email inviting him to TerraSphere.
During a bad month, he was forced to take out a terrible deal with a terrible group of people and it didn't pay off, his luck seemingly having run out. And when they eventually backed him into a corner and he saw no way out, he took a gamble on the murmurings throughout the game, of dying and being locked within, of never returning to the outside world.
It was a gamble he was willing to take.
